With respect, Bullington deserved to be punished in this manner for the way he treated his step father! The scene a little later with Bullington as an adult beating on little Bryan and again is punished for putting his hands on the boy!
Thanks for posting! I remember this harsh punishment scene from when I saw this 70's gem at a local theater when it was first released. That's GOTTA smart...strictly from owsville, daddy-o! A long & talky movie...and like all of Kubrick's movies, not for all tastes. As with all of the late Stanley's films, the art direction & photography are absolutely amazing. CHEERS! :-)
Ha! Not quite! That's just the effect of the cane. Imagine a red hot poker - you want to run, but you know that's only going to p*ss the caner off and so you do your best to get through it.

No way.Barry Lyndon was a self rightous scoundrel who live off his lady's money. The boy didn't deserve the punishment. In fact by punishing the boy he made the boy hate him and wanting to kill him.The movie was great but I never felt sympathy for Redmond Barry.
The stepson grows up, deeply embarrasses his stepdad at a music recital, and the stepdad starts a brawl with him in a salon where the recital is taking place...
Very Respectful!

Should've had the boy bend over more so he couldn't lift up on his toes after each lick.

I remember getting the cane when I was younger - although probably a bit older than he was. It bl**dy hurt. That looks painful enough to me!!

The character sort of reflects how Ryan O'Neal is in real life, according to his daughter, Tatum.

why? what did he do?
cellolove 5 years ago
He was rude to his step dad! There is a much better scene later on in the film involving a young boy that may interest you!
