I have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Mercedes vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps carbs and EFi injectors clean as new!
i had a 1641 in my 67 type1 with a progressive kit and custom made a linkage for both butterflies to open at the same time worked out pretty good almost like a single 44 or 40 idf.. cool place to mount ur tach.. good luck and keep on bugin!!!!!!!!!
so roughly how much extra BHP from a standard 1600 beetle motor on twin carbs? and how much extra with a good big single like this? also what sort of money are we talkin for both cases?
mmm this looks like the stock 34 carb...but people manage to get 90+ bhp from a 1641cc displacement, but we're talking about a real expensive engine then...
Anyway, rumour has it that a gain of 15 bhp is possible with dual setup on a 1641cc engine, that is with adjustment on a rolling road and under best circumstances of course. Nut anyway, that are serious numbers...to me...I bought a set of 40mm webers for my 1915cc for about 170 euro's including expensive Gene Berg manifolds...

its a stinger, really good sound but a big ugly thing to have hanging off the back.

Nah, the single purposefully out of tune carb restriction is what keeps them alive, no big stresses on the engine equal longer life!
Porche designed them like that.

indeed, why don't put double carbs on that one...the original manifold is a restriction itself...sounds cool, though!
