what is the ref doing standing that close to the penalty taker? On the crucial second-last penalty that gets saved, he is running backwards as the ball is kicked, right in the view of the kicker...not saying it neccesarily affected the result but what a numpty!
By the way, the posting for this should read: Aberdeen 0-Celtic 0 (9-8 on penalty kicks). Yep, don't be fooled into thinking this is as good as the Motherwell v. Hibs 6-6 draw. Now that's entertainment.
I mean, how much "skill" does it take to score from 12 yards with the keeper not technically allowed to move until the ball is kicked?
@MurdaZen Might be an idea rather than sitting through 90 minutes + 30 minutes of extra time of nil-nil. Then again I can only handle soccer hilites as I have no patience for sports with about one shot on a goal every 10 minutes the size of a barn door. Sorry, I'll stick with the worst NHL game over 0-0 snoozefests followed by a lottery. You may as well do "rock, scissors, paper" to decide matches.
All I say is why don't y'all join the rest of the sports world and play until someone scores.
@BiffScooter1 yeah but you didnt sit through 120 minutes of nothing tho, u just saw 18 penalties. il put it a way an american might understand, this game was the scottish superbowl and it was decided with one of the most nerve racking ways of decideding a game, and the underdog won 9-8. its not a lottery, you've never taken a penalty that has meant anything, its easier said than done.
NHL has shoot outs too, so i duno what your saying. but yeah watch womens football, they cant defend.
@MurdaZen Why an "American"? As benny Hill once put it, "Never assume as you make an..." You know how it goes. You don't have to "explain" Scottish fitba to me, mate. I was at the 1980 Scottish Cup Final riot. Yes, I am that old. Penalty shootouts are bogus. You guys decide European or world championships with them. How dumb is that?
NHL has shootouts now in the "regular" season. Not in the playoffs when something is on the line, doofus.
You boys could always take a wee trip down the road and see the cup again if you like, she looks a lot better nowadays, with her Tangerine & Black ribbons ;)
Brilliant. I was there. never forget i though Rogan was going to bury his penalty, his face was pure determination heading from the halfway line. I couldn't watch,i just buried my head in my scarf. When i heard the roar go up round about me it was just sheer magic. When big Irvine stepped up my legs were like jelly. I remember trying to climb the fence when he stuck it away. Brilliant. Lets hope it's not long before the Dons are back lifting silver wear at Hampden. Stand free!!
The worst game I have ever seen.120 minutes of drivel.Just as well i smuggled a bottle of whisky into hampden!!Superb finish though.Brian Irvine becomes god. 'mon eh dons
The penalty shootout was a classic, i was behind the goal in the dons end. Big Theo was brilliant on the day, but the miss from Anton was even better.
I turned up with my cousin without tickets... me a Don and him a Tim and we both ended up getting into the Stadium... I was behind the goal where the penalties were taken and my cuz was in the main stand... he was obviously not as happy as me at the end, but what a game!!! The atmosphere and great weather... all I can say is that this day was really a classic. As far as finals go, it will be a long time before a day in life is so rememorable for both sets of fans.
What a day! One of my first football memories. Brian Irvine was my favourite player at the time so was even more special. Shame that's last time we won the Cup to date, hopefully that'll change soon. STAND FREE!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Brian Ervin showed the way, not only with scoring the wining penalty, but being a true Christian, not like the crappy catholic and protestant shite you get In Glasgow, true fact most rangers and Celtic fans do not even go to church and are hypocrites
Hauw, Anton's a lej who's cross for Macca's equaliser saved our Centenary Double in '88. Also, he "allowed" history to record big Brian Irvine as the match winner which is nae a bad story. Especially as I think the Dons winning it wound the goat-shaggers up even more than if it had been us!
that was a day an a half 8 years old never forget it, and the sight of all the wee neds greeting at the fence pissed myself laughing sceptic were a total joke back then just shows money talks,
Anton Rogan your your a tit your a tit and 38000 dons sang it
was at this game was only 9 even then i knew when it was rogans turn to fear the worst. i liked him though he gave his all in every game even if it was pish most of the time lol.
What a great day. I remember Theo giving it loads to us behind the goal when he saw it was Anton Rogan taking the pen. Hilarious!Possibly my favourite Celtic player of all time!
Nae bother for big Brian, Rogan's penalty was as soft as shite, Snelders had time to scratch his erse and read the matchday programme before he saved it.
nothing wrong with Rogan's penalty at all, Snelders made a fantastic save. had he dived to the other side it would have gone down as a "perfect penalty" - low, firm, right in the corner. never trust long a long run-up though. sure fire sign that the kicker is really feeling the heat.
a joke back then? They still are along with Rangers. The other Premier teams have continued where you have all bought your Glory. How many home grown players ever get in your team nowadays?

Look how fucking close the ref is to the penalty taker! Is that that prick, Valentine?
Big Anton got crucified that day, but at least he hit the target - Wdowcyk blazed his over the bar.
I also remember Mikey Galloway nearly halfing David Robertson in two with a ludicrously vicious tackle.
JohnnyContagious 2 years ago
@JohnnyContagious I am sure the referee is George Smith, and he was still walking back from the Aberdeen goalkeeper when Anton Rogan started his run.
