Because the straight Ninja sword (aka Ninjato) is modern invention and never used by real Ninja. The film-makers probably didn't know that, though. So, more than likely, they just found a Samurai Katana and went with it.

Funny Classic with Dan Aykroyd & Chevy Chase. Spies Like Us,, was originally to be a possible re-teaming of Dan Aykroyd & John Belushi. But Belushi died and it was re-written for him and Chase. Look for it on DVD.
