Meet the M4 Sherman's big brother the M1 Abrams!!! I wonder what will happen if a Tiger or Panther tank took a direct hit from an Abrams 120mm shell. i noticed that the Abrams tank has those Sherman "wheel tracks" incorporated in the "back". I wonder if the Abrams sports a Christie Suspension .

the russians dropped the christie suspension after the T34. however independent wheel suspension is the norm an dhas been for a long time.

dun forget tactics do play a major part in a tank's track record. Classic example is the russian t-34, arguably the most well-balanced tanks of WW2 and perhaps in history as well. But it suffered a seemingly poor track record and casualties mainly because of the soviet doctrine of mass charge, which was the result of Stalin's ambition, giving his generals no choice but to sacrifice their men with suicidal tactics just to achieve his goal of dominating Europe.

Imagine what Havoc the Germans could have caused with a company of M1A2's? My god. The T-34 would have gotten FUCKED UP!!! lol I consider the Abrams to be the "greatest" tank ever because of it's track record. The "Best"? I'd have to say is the British Challenger 2. that thing is a beast :)

if i'm going to be fighting in the open field, i would take the abrams, merkava or leopard.

if i'm fighting in mountainous areas or jungles, i would take the XK2

@Germanyisthebest1 A huge number of those 33,000 tanks are not serviceable at all, just painted to keep appearances. Many of the ones that are available, are very old and would be destroyed from long range, or break down on the road-march to battle. It is time though (past time) for us to stop with the NATO against Russia comparison. Our real enemy (Germany and Russia) is Islam. Danke.

the reason certain areas of armor on the Abrams is les thick than the turret is because those areas are reactive armor which doesnt need to be thich. the reason being is that reactive armor causes the warhead to detonate before hitting the tank.

ur all right, but what do expect in a war when ur put sanctions againt ur enemy, so will win, why bother theinkg about defete when alreay have an uper hand, especialy in the second invation. and why doen it take 2 countries to destroy one country, why did the US invade with the help of britinn, sure they could have taken iraq alone. england could take iraq alone, but both wars are not fair, so why think of defete when its out of the quiestion, uv already won when u have 2 to 1 in ur favour.

The M1 abrams is still crap. reason why ? Simply one thing. they put a gas turbine engine in that, the rest is fine, but mostly not even build in the U.s the gun is german, the armor is british.

Arguements are endless about which tank is "best". The German, British, American, French (LeClerc) and Israeli (Merkava) are ALL arguably the "best" modern tank to take to the field. Truth is they are all virtually equal and the winner will be who has the best trained crew. Then the arguement starts over again about who has the "best" training, etc...

Modern Tanks are AWESOME and guarantee a place for armor on the 21st century battlefield!

L55 has longer barrel length. 55 is the calibres and calibres refers to the number of lengths compared to the calibre. The calibre is the internal diameter of the barrel, which on both L44 & L55 is 120 mm, or 12 cm. So the barrel length of an L55 is 12x55 cm = 660 cm. An L44 is 12x44 cm = 528 cm.

The L55 utilize this greater length by offering greater muzzle velocity, thus greater range, there is also a new round for the L55 which further use the length of the weapon, a round the K44 can't use.

no, no, no. Just because speed is increased doesn't mean range is, it does not work that way all the time, it is to increase its chances to penetrate through armor, but you are right about the difference with the L44 and L55. L55 does not launch its projectile further, any gun can do that, the L44 can but whats the point in most terrains? besides if you can put rocket like HEAT rounds in Smoothebore guns, no need to increase range since the missile will do that already.

the L55 doesnt increase range, it increases muzzle velocity of any ammunition flying through it.

@titan5000 Lol, did u know that the main gun is only part of the firepower. The rounds they use prove the firepower. The latest round the M1 abrams uses is the m829a3. the round was so great it beats the leo 2a6's gun with the dm63.

@mad4ce What you dont realize the Abrams tank has a thinner belly thus the ieds have been covered up how many have been destroyed. We have lost alot of abrams and there crews but the goverment covers it up. Now they realize they need a belly plate and have made plans to retro fit the Abrams, now the Leopard 2a6 can run over ieds !! so wich one would you really choose ?
