Just as English and French 'democracy' was won by popular struggle of the masses against the few in control, the same method is not applicable in Africa.
Europeans, who had control of their nations before the machine gun were at the mercy of popular might.
Mass revolt now, even if the people's will was Western style democracy and capitalism, would be impossible.
Western capitalism's economic influence is what pays for the small, but well armed armies who can decimate any popular opposition.
3) The company wins, he wins, the nation loses. No-one can revolt, because, courtesy of the money paid to him by De Beers, Shell, or another huge company reliant on other countries' resources, he can afford to be better armed and better equipped.
No-one needs capitalism, but Africa needs to control its own destiny.
Africa is currently partaking very well in Capitalism.
1) a tyrant (with or without outside help) manages to overthrow a government.
2) the International Business community decide it is is cheaper to pay off this individual despot and maybe his family and friends, than to look for the same goods elsewhere.
The problem with conventional intellectuals like Dambisa Moyo is that even when they're smart enough to come to the conclusion that the free market works best, they still want it to be regulated which tells me they don't understand the free market at all. The free market is not some kind of mechanical system that is implemented. It is just voluntary exchange of property titles absent of state coercion. People like Dambisa Moyo see that capitalism works yet they do not understand how it works.
