@Wdel32 I'm guessing you might be referring to Phil Bailey's tenor solo in "Reasons" here (rather than Sun Goddess, although both are from the same album/concert). If only because I'm not sure you could say there is a real tenor solo in "Sun Goddess."
Great stuff all around, in any case. Or, to borrow from [and turn] a phrase: "They [sing] so beautiful, don't you agree?" :D

With all due respect to a previous post, this ain't just "the best E,W&F live album ever"......it is IMO, the best LIVE album ever by any group!? Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Stones, E,W&F, Hall & Oates, The Ohio Players, The Clash.
I think this is my favorite album of all time. Mine well-worn but still played; lost it in Katrina :-(. Thank God for Youtube. :-). EVERY SONG is a hit!
The "Gratitude" Album is one of the greatest albums ...ever. I still have the vinyl and still play it with all of the pops and still make beleive that I am Andew Woolfolk, Don Myrick (he plays so beautiful, don't you agree?) or Larry Dunn
@Mulsanne917andkink .........My God, do I feel your pain! I also have the original vinyl copies of EWF's "Gratitude" & Ramsey Lewis's "Sun Goddess" (the studio version). Being a family man, Husband & Grandfather......I'm guilty of not taking the proper time to possibly go "online" and find a great turntable & speaker system. I haven't had one for YEARS!
@aliquippawill I was given an "ION" turntable over X-mas....cheap, and light, but it sports the opportunity to port vinyl directly to MP3 thru a USB connection. If I remember, I'll let you know how it works out.
The problem I have isn't turntables as much as it is stylii/styluses. I have four or five workable TT's here, but no real good styluses ("needle heads," for those who might be listening in).
Need a good source for a Bang and Olufsen, if you or anyone else has one. Thanks!
@Mulsanne917andkink .......It's very ironic that you have given me this information. I have recently discovered an "ION" turntable on Amazon.com that converts vinyl LP's directly to audio CD's.........and I am STRONGLY considering purchasing this product before the month of January has run it's course. As much as I am excited about the possibilities of this purchase, I am more than a little concerned about the sound quality of the finished product. Can you possibly shed some light on THAT issue?
@aliquippawill I can't, unfortunately, because I have not yet opened the box or hooked it up.
Two thoughts though: 1) a turntable that converts LP's to CD format should really convert the files to .wav format and not to MP3 (MP3 is "iPod format") as best I can tell, and it's "lossy," unlike .wav ("lossy": A tiny bit of the original fidelity is lost with each playing); 2) Sony also makes a similar LP to CD turntable you might consider, costing perhaps $125 US ("Target" stores, in the US).
@aliquippawill Followup: I can't give you a model# for the Sony, but what I DO remember from my queries a couple years back is that it's the SOFTWARE included (or available for download after purchase ) that really seems to make one offering better than the other--there was one in particular I remember called "SoapScrub" or something like that which supposedly helped remove a lot of the "clicks and pops" so commonly heard with vinyl recordings.
@Mulsanne917andkink .....I sincerely thank you for the effort that you have given in replying to my concerns. The "ION" USB turntable I am attracted to costs approx. 260 dollars..........and thrilled as I am about the possibilities of listening to vinyl recordings that I haven't listened to in LITERALLY decades, I generally like to have more of a positive feeling towards my potential investments than I currently have towards this. Once again, thank you for your information & God bless.
@Mulsanne917andkink I also have this Gratitude! white cover 2 album set ~!Whoooo!~Off the Muther F,,in! chain!~ Hey look for a Heartland catalog , they have The turntables that you can play all your 78's, 45's and 33's and download into your computer and burn on to CD's etc. cost under $100.00. @Offbeat1000 you win the award for the BEST COMMENT that proves you really know the music. I can see you in your mirror singing "wayyyyy-o". "Yes, you play so beautiful, I agree!"
Ya know... I love ALL of their music but I will step out there and say that Sun Goddess is my absolute FAVORITE EWF song. I'm not someone who meditates but this song just takes me there every single time that I listen to it :-).
@MsTrycie Yeah, there's nothing quite like the warmth of old vinyl, particularly on a true "vacuum tube" set.
I listened to this hour after hour on my father's "Fisher Space-X-pander (late 60's tech)" setup (a reverb room-expander-type unit)...and I've never heard anything as good as that to this very day.
Sadly, "progress" too often fails to even equal the past, let alone "progress further."
@MsTrycie another song that gets me "there" is the theme from 2001 Space Odessy by EUMIR DEODATO. Another awesome piece of music. I saw the film in '68 as a 9yo and never forgot the music. Enjoy!
I remember concerts in the park were there was ten artists on the marque and we would be up ALLLLL NIght without any incidents...people knew how to respect each other differences and jam to the same music...remember the good ole' days because we will never see those days again.....Now this is music....ENJOY!
I cant tell how many tuff times this song and the whole album got me thru..hours and days in my room with this album playing over and over 'til I was healed.....my 1st concert...and Ive always had a copy of this album, wax, 8trk,cassette, dvd and now video online....many memories much love and spirituality
This still gives me the pins and needles. The band may not have been at their most popular here, but musically they were in the the groove big time. The jazz element was a major and when they left it out after 'Spirit', the true vibe of the band went with it.
Not that I didn't like subsequent albums, just that the funk and jazz hit the spot for me.
Beautiful music in the making here. Love to all who love this.

Saw EWF in "75 at Pine Knob outside theater in Clarkson, MI outside Detroit. Fantastic concert. They put one one hell of a show. Thanks trademark1874 for sharing this.
I want this played at my 40th birthday. I've chosen it to be my theme song. I think it's me all the way. I love the sun, warm weather, and am just a bright spot. Cheers and rock on.
EWF had the BADDEST Live Albums out! I usually don't like live performances due to various reasons, but even when EWF adds their own little twist different from the album. It is still HOT........we could sing word for word off their albums
I borrowed this album from a friend of mine when we were in high school and he liked to never get it back! Man, I miss the music ... REAL MUSIC! Bands like EWF that consistently made artistic as well as influential music that spoke to a generation trying to find itself. Civil rights, post-Vietnam war, etc. The musicians back then were real and very aware of what the brother on the street was going through. Their music reflected that.
70sbaby80schild321 Studio or live, it's good music and a bad jam! Most important, it's REAL music. Not that watered down stuff they're listening to today. PEACE
This sound needs to come back. These great bands are getting old and not to far in the future theyll be gone forever. EW&F your the best and definetly a tough act to follow. Thanks for such great music.
After the brilliant tune is done, I love the drum 'crash' at 7:28, just as Maurice says, "alright, y'all!" I have loved that ever since I was a kid, for some reason. :)
Hey klwewf - I love this too - I love that same bit - I used jump around in my bedroom & talking like that and playing all the air instruments!!! Just brilliant - oh, bye the way - I'm white and now 56 but I'm still jumping round y'all.......
Agree that live version is much better! EWF is still in a sense underrated, you hardly ever hear them on the radio anymore, apart from Fantasy, September and Boogie wonderland. Not bad those songs, but there is so much more to play by them!
@Teletubbie257 look a EWF song dance, dance, dance on youtube. that's is an unreleased EWF song and it is fantastic you still hear them on the radio nowadays but you have call to station if they do requests now.
Real Talk! When you listen to this music-One song! You felt like you got your money's worth when you purchased the album! When you listened to the whole album, it felt like you went on a vacation without leaving your house! That is the difference between these classics, and the albums of today!
This song orginally don with Ramsey Lewis from the LP Sun Goddess. I like this live version better it has more energy and they expanded the vocal harmonies from the orginal, just great Stuff from one of the all time great bands EWF
This is a bad jam here, c mon now, they bad!! Love em I also seen them in Pittsburgh at the Civic Arena august of 77, the greatest concert I ever attended, remember they did magic on stage? C mon now, the greatest band ever
@snoopydog48us greatest concert for me was about that same year: Pablo Cruise, Macky Auditorium (CU), Boulder CO. Fourth row, and right in front of a speaker stack that stood about twelve feet high....
Today, at age 50+ I battle "tinnitus" in both ears. Don't know why, really...but...
...I will say: If it was that concert that caused it all those years ago...
i first saw EWF spring 75, Pittsburgh's Civic Arena. Summer '75 caught em at an Blossom Ampitheater, Akron, Ohio. That winter, Dec. 75, they released Grattitude the live LP. What a hot time for this band. Do they really need Chicago as a co-tour in 2010?
Sadly time is taking its toll on Phillip,he s still good but the energy is that of a mid aged man.Dont forget Maurice is no longer there.Back when we saw them they needed no one,but now Chicago takes a little of the demand off Phillip Ralph and even Verdine. However I think the musicianship is a little better than the original lineup in 75
@teakawks00 MAybe they do ,since Maurice is gone. He was a very special talent for EWF. I loved his voice on most of the songs.Philipp isnt bad though dont get me wrong.
@teakawks00 .......I'm a native of a town about 20 minutes NW of Pittsburgh.......Aliquippa, Pa. (hence, my username!). I attended the EXACT SAME CONCERT at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena in the spring of '75! Hearing someone else mention that evening......after all these years.....gives me an absolute chill! That concert, without debate, remains one of the HIGHLIGHTS of my 54 year existence!
he's not a 25 year old man any more , he's almost 60 . i met them backstage back in 2003 in connecticut . they were so nice . these guys are musical icons . i met phillip's son in seattle , who looks exactly like him .
Re: jpcknight79 I know what u mean man but I think it could be because: 1) you gotta figure these guys are workaholic's like Tower of Power and many other bands where, when they finish a tour, they go right back out and start another tour and 2) Imagine singing these same songs over and over, night after night, month and month, year after year and 3)These guys are pushing 60 still going night after night. Check out a band w/ alot more original members called the Earth, Wind & Fire Experience.
When I was a kid, I used to wake up on a Saturday, put this record on my headphones and blast it! When my folks weren't home, I'd put it on the speakers. Good times...good times. Ah, the 70's! (46 years old)
if someone could tell me who the sax player is.....................this is the best I have ever heard. I vividly remember my best buddy and me grooving to this track in particular back in the late 1970's.......playing air guitar and air drums.........wishing we could be in the EWF band and watching the panties fly on stage in our support!!!
Yeah - This just piles Funk on Soul on Funk 'til ya almost can't take it anymore. Love this bass groove - it's like one of those "Perfect" grooves, and the sax solo Kills me Every Time with the last note givin' me CHILLS. The Smoothest BadAss song ever. And, YEAH, FUNK BOMBS be GOOD! Ha Ha Ha
lAST TIME i SAW HIM ON TV , HE LOKKED OK . HE MAY HAVE HIS UP AND DOWN DAYS BECAUSE OF HIS PARKINSONS . HIS SON LOOKS JUST LIKE HIM . I SAW THEM ON TV TOGETHER AT THE GRAMMYS ABOUT FOUR YEARS AGO .
Keep an ear on how the sax comes in preceded by glorious keyboard notes at 2:11...no doubt the best sax performance amid a grandiose rendition of the whole piece. The best from Earth, Wind and Fire, I have no heard anything that good ever since.
No words can describe. you had to be there in that day and time to truly enjoy and feel they entire vibe....I was young at the time but totally engrossed and thought I understood!
I like all of the music that EWF made. This is one of the greatest ever

@Gillandpablo Best Live album ever, certainly. I really can't think of another that even comes close.
As regards doubles, I would also put "Songs in the Key of Life" (Stevie Wonder), and "Endless Summer" (Beach Boys) right up there alongside this one.
Fortunately I own all three of them...so I don't have to play favorites among them. :D
My Favorite LP of all though? "A Charlie Brown Christmas" (Vince Guaraldi).

MrBod69 1 year ago 4
I borrowed this album from a friend of mine when we were in high school and he liked to never get it back! Man, I miss the music ... REAL MUSIC! Bands like EWF that consistently made artistic as well as influential music that spoke to a generation trying to find itself. Civil rights, post-Vietnam war, etc. The musicians back then were real and very aware of what the brother on the street was going through. Their music reflected that.
PapoloHarleyRider 1 year ago 2
not to mention the fact, instrumentally speaking this is way above the level of anything commercial nowadays, i feel bad even comparing it.

70sbaby80schild321 Studio or live, it's good music and a bad jam! Most important, it's REAL music. Not that watered down stuff they're listening to today. PEACE

@Hackenzwerg It's just love for life maybe? Dunno (not that I'm any sort of expert on this).

I agree Brazilian!! The music speaks to Your Soul, Your skin color has little relevance!! Awesome!!! PS, Iam white, female and 56yrs young!!!! Lol!
cptmccoy 2 years ago 2
Hey 1957dvdv I'm 55 years old and black- music is universal and speaks to the soul-which has no color
braziliansamba54 2 years ago
Thats right! I agree strongly. There is no color in music.

Ooooooo! Soooo smooooth! I LOVE EW&F. Saw them twice at the Zoo Amphitheatre in OKC. Minus Maurice White. :o( But they still smoothed my soul.

LOVE them

Where is Ramsey Lewis? This is his song!

the bassgroove made me want to play bass and changed the way i hear sounds
jrayblaze61 2 years ago
The rhythm that kicks in at :20 is so friggin' heavy...
You could hear these guys were the real deal. Listen to the vocals, and sax and electric piano solos...wow!
Any else feel the tempo creap up a bit. I wonder if it was Maurice deciding to bring it up for concert effect.

singable and so amazingly timeless geniuses..

This sound needs to come back. These great bands are getting old and not to far in the future theyll be gone forever. EW&F your the best and definetly a tough act to follow. Thanks for such great music.
joegbuz 2 years ago 3
After the brilliant tune is done, I love the drum 'crash' at 7:28, just as Maurice says, "alright, y'all!" I have loved that ever since I was a kid, for some reason. :)
klwewf 2 years ago
Hey klwewf - I love this too - I love that same bit - I used jump around in my bedroom & talking like that and playing all the air instruments!!! Just brilliant - oh, bye the way - I'm white and now 56 but I'm still jumping round y'all.......
1957dvdv 2 years ago
@klwewf Yeah, I've always liked that too. You should really hear the high-definition version on the SACD of "Gratitude".
hankaaron1961 1 year ago
yeah, the live version is better.
TheCalebson 2 years ago 2
Agree that live version is much better! EWF is still in a sense underrated, you hardly ever hear them on the radio anymore, apart from Fantasy, September and Boogie wonderland. Not bad those songs, but there is so much more to play by them!
Teletubbie257 2 years ago 9
@Teletubbie257 look a EWF song dance, dance, dance on youtube. that's is an unreleased EWF song and it is fantastic you still hear them on the radio nowadays but you have call to station if they do requests now.

Real Talk! When you listen to this music-One song! You felt like you got your money's worth when you purchased the album! When you listened to the whole album, it felt like you went on a vacation without leaving your house! That is the difference between these classics, and the albums of today!
arobinson68 2 years ago
Yes! this is what i called contemporary
jazz with earth wind and fire style!
But this song it'll be forever for me!

Studio version is more mellow. Live version is more upbeat, music & lyrics are fuller..! EWR 4ever!

C mon now, the greatest band ever
snoopydog48us 2 years ago 23
@snoopydog48us greatest concert for me was about that same year: Pablo Cruise, Macky Auditorium (CU), Boulder CO. Fourth row, and right in front of a speaker stack that stood about twelve feet high....
Today, at age 50+ I battle "tinnitus" in both ears. Don't know why, really...but...
...I will say: If it was that concert that caused it all those years ago...
...it was worth it!!!
Mulsanne917andkink 1 year ago
i first saw EWF spring 75, Pittsburgh's Civic Arena. Summer '75 caught em at an Blossom Ampitheater, Akron, Ohio. That winter, Dec. 75, they released Grattitude the live LP. What a hot time for this band. Do they really need Chicago as a co-tour in 2010?
teakawks00 2 years ago 7
Sadly time is taking its toll on Phillip,he s still good but the energy is that of a mid aged man.Dont forget Maurice is no longer there.Back when we saw them they needed no one,but now Chicago takes a little of the demand off Phillip Ralph and even Verdine. However I think the musicianship is a little better than the original lineup in 75
dizyootum 2 years ago
@teakawks00 MAybe they do ,since Maurice is gone. He was a very special talent for EWF. I loved his voice on most of the songs.Philipp isnt bad though dont get me wrong.
willowseeker 1 year ago
@teakawks00 .......I'm a native of a town about 20 minutes NW of Pittsburgh.......Aliquippa, Pa. (hence, my username!). I attended the EXACT SAME CONCERT at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena in the spring of '75! Hearing someone else mention that evening......after all these years.....gives me an absolute chill! That concert, without debate, remains one of the HIGHLIGHTS of my 54 year existence!

Caught EW&F + Chicago June 10th @
Merriweather / Columbia, MD Very good
show. Musically, they still have it. V ocally,
I have to give them a 5 out of 10 some of those notes were very off key and Phillip must not have really been trying because
he kept cracking on the lines that I thought
would be easy for him. But, overall very good show.

Don't be too hard on Phil, times taking it's toll.
savida34e 2 years ago
he's not a 25 year old man any more , he's almost 60 . i met them backstage back in 2003 in connecticut . they were so nice . these guys are musical icons . i met phillip's son in seattle , who looks exactly like him .
tubagee 2 years ago
Re: jpcknight79 I know what u mean man but I think it could be because: 1) you gotta figure these guys are workaholic's like Tower of Power and many other bands where, when they finish a tour, they go right back out and start another tour and 2) Imagine singing these same songs over and over, night after night, month and month, year after year and 3)These guys are pushing 60 still going night after night. Check out a band w/ alot more original members called the Earth, Wind & Fire Experience.

if someone could tell me who the sax player is.....................this is the best I have ever heard. I vividly remember my best buddy and me grooving to this track in particular back in the late 1970's.......playing air guitar and air drums.........wishing we could be in the EWF band and watching the panties fly on stage in our support!!!

Keep an ear on how the sax comes in preceded by glorious keyboard notes at 2:11...no doubt the best sax performance amid a grandiose rendition of the whole piece. The best from Earth, Wind and Fire, I have no heard anything that good ever since.
