@TheShazka@jnetusil Both of you are correct, because both Kerry and Eden were understudies, but Kerry was Idina's understudy only when she moved over to London production of "Wicked" 2006. But Idina's FIRST understudy was Eden, in 2003. She was replaced by Shoshana Bean in 2004 when Eden left the show to work on "Brooklyn: The Musical". :)

I was reading the comments and found it funny how people think Eden is copying Idina (which is so untrue) Eden was Idina's standby straight up in Wicked so there was no copying there! And in Rent, she was invited to be apart of the closing company cast and she had wanted to play the part of Maureen since she saw it when it first opened, because the musical touched her...... sooooo she didn't 'copy' Idina at all!! @TheShazka I find it funny that people try to speak to the motivation of people when they are not that person. Only Eden Espinosa can say if she way trying to RECREATE the same type of performance that Menzel won a Tony for. Not you or anyone else. The fact that she played Maureen in Rent is irrelevant and doesn't lend itself to back up your point of view in either way. So many experts here on what other people think it makes me laugh.
Respond to this video... I saw Idina in RENT. Those that mock her voice most likely never heard her perform live. I also saw Espinosa in Wicked and she was just as amazing. The two actresses have a very similar style to them. Espinosa seems to a have a more polished voice (which isn't always a good thing) and Menzel just connects directly, any flaws in her voice only seem to make it more endearing and powerful. Hard to say one is better than the other.
I was wondering on the video at time 1:35 .....what performace was that from of Eden's? That gave me chills of the way she sang that line :) it was so good!
Ah, she has a very nice interpretation. And that being said, each actor/actress should be allowed a margin of interpretation, since they are professionals and all. I will say vocally, she sounds more healthy than Idina (by the end of her Wicked run in England she was croaking, it sounded painful. Check out the videos, it's so very sad)
I think what makes Eden special is that she has so much power in her voice, a very rich, full quality. Seeing her live is just so breathtaking and intense, gives you chills.

I mean because there's less competition for roles for originals, you know? People get SO insecure when these "mash up" videos go up. They get all territorial about who's "the best". It's ridiculous. Part of really knowing how to appreciate good are is understanding how to appreciate each artist's interpretation. There is NO "best". Just what you prefer.
Personally think that Eden owns no good deed. I mean her way of preforming it was definitely my favorite. But I think that Indina's Deifying Gravity was the best and I love Kerry Ellis rocks the Wizard and I... Idina Menzel as Elphaba is now the way we hear and attempt to imitate Defying Gravity and the way we see Wicked... no matter what we'll always compare new talent to the originals... in this case Eden with Idina...
Eden brings something rock-edgy to Elphaba, like Megan Hilty brings humor (and lots of it) if not hammy humor to Galinda! just sayin they're a good mix.
IN MY OPINION Eden's portrayal of Elphaba mirrored Margaret Hamilton and I personally think Eden had the closest resemblence to Margaret and had the laugh down. If you look at Wicked in the Wizard of Oz aspect Eden is the perfect Elphaba.
However, if you view Wicked as a seperate entity from TWoO all together, for me Idina was the perfect Elphaba. I enjoyed seeing the softer sensitive side to a younger "Wicked Witch" and how she wasn't born evil opposed to what we knew of her from TWoO.

Those of you saying copy cats....different voices are different types. Idina and Eden happen to get similar if not same roles because they sing the same vocal part. Get over it. Everyone moves around in theatre and everyone does it differently. And who ever said no one is the best. You are right. They all have faults. Why does she think that she's Idina Menzel? I mean, it's like she follows her around and tries to do everything she does... I'm sure it some sort of "you look like her and you sing well, you should do this part..." They might even be friends and set these things up, But she's so unoriginal and second rate in comparison. Yes she can sing, maybe even a little better technically, But Idina's voice coupled with her acting and her amazing connection to these rolls just makes her THE BEST... BETTER!

@hali28target Copying aside (which I doubt anyone will ever be able to agree on, even Eden and Idina themselves), neither Idina nor Eden simply 'are the best'. You just can't categorize them like that - although, some Elphabas such as Idina and Kerry may have larger fanbases than others. I took care in my video to put Eden as simply 'my favourite'.
Can we please just agree that there is no single undisputed 'best' in either Idina or Eden, and that every fan just has their favourites?
@hali28target Anybody with even a rudimentary understanding of vocal performance would see that Eden's vocal control and vocal HEALTH is absolutely superior to Idina's. Her tone is cleaner, her belt is stronger and less forced, her mix is incredible, and you don't get a giant gasp every time she takes a breath.
Yeah, Idina's great, but Eden is honestly a much better vocalist. Idina just blows the role out of the water acting-wise. But Eden was great, too.

I'm a contralto when I sing, and I really want to expand my vocal range because I love Broadway and can't hit any of these high notes. Honestly, I think I'm lower than contralto which is sad because contralto is the lowest vocal range for women so I really want to expand it but I can't get a vocal coach. I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips.

All though Idina is definitely my favorite Elphie, Eden Espinosa has something that simply cannot be ignored when it comes to her voice, even when she plays Maureen in Rent. Eden is definitely a very VERY close second in both of these shows.
@harrypotterwicked lea salonga is actually a professional broadway actress who played Fantine and Eponine in Les Miserables, starred in Miss Saigon and a bunch of other productions. She's actually done some pretty good covers of Wicked songs.
However, I think you mean Lea Michelle who was also on Broadway.... she's ok... but she sounds pretty bad as Elphaba..

Idina Menzel as Elphaba is now the way we hear and attempt to imitate Defying Gravity and the way we see Wicked... no matter what we'll always compare new talent to the originals... in this case Eden with Idina...
Eden brings something rock-edgy to Elphaba, like Megan Hilty brings humor (and lots of it) if not hammy humor to Galinda! just sayin they're a good mix.

IN MY OPINION Eden's portrayal of Elphaba mirrored Margaret Hamilton and I personally think Eden had the closest resemblence to Margaret and had the laugh down. If you look at Wicked in the Wizard of Oz aspect Eden is the perfect Elphaba.
However, if you view Wicked as a seperate entity from TWoO all together, for me Idina was the perfect Elphaba. I enjoyed seeing the softer sensitive side to a younger "Wicked Witch" and how she wasn't born evil opposed to what we knew of her from TWoO.

everyone shouldnt compare really! Idina Menzel will always be the original Elphaba and we all love her for it, Eden is also another great elphaba! THEY ARE BOTH GREAT! They are unique in their own way!

Those of you saying copy cats....different voices are different types. Idina and Eden happen to get similar if not same roles because they sing the same vocal part. Get over it. Everyone moves around in theatre and everyone does it differently. And who ever said no one is the best. You are right. They all have faults. But they all have things that get them hundreds of thousands of views on you tube.

Why does she think that she's Idina Menzel? I mean, it's like she follows her around and tries to do everything she does... I'm sure it some sort of "you look like her and you sing well, you should do this part..." They might even be friends and set these things up, But she's so unoriginal and second rate in comparison. Yes she can sing, maybe even a little better technically, But Idina's voice coupled with her acting and her amazing connection to these rolls just makes her THE BEST... BETTER!

If you see Idina, compared to others, she's the best. & I only meant that she copies her because she played the part of Maureen in Rent, which Idina played originally & Eden played after she left. @hali28target Copying aside (which I doubt anyone will ever be able to agree on, even Eden and Idina themselves), neither Idina nor Eden simply 'are the best'. You just can't categorize them like that - although, some Elphabas such as Idina and Kerry may have larger fanbases than others. I took care in my video to put Eden as simply 'my favourite'.
Can we please just agree that there is no single undisputed 'best' in either Idina or Eden, and that every fan just has their favourites?

@hali28target Anybody with even a rudimentary understanding of vocal performance would see that Eden's vocal control and vocal HEALTH is absolutely superior to Idina's. Her tone is cleaner, her belt is stronger and less forced, her mix is incredible, and you don't get a giant gasp every time she takes a breath.
Yeah, Idina's great, but Eden is honestly a much better vocalist. Idina just blows the role out of the water acting-wise. But Eden was great, too.

@hali28target People share roles all the time. i seriously doubt Eden saw Rent and said "Ooh Idina was in rent, i think I'll audition for Maureen too!" when you audition for a broadway show you audition several times so it wouldn't be that easy.

@PastormacsAnn, to add to your comment it isn't even about her seeing the role and saying oh I'll play that too, everyone has types of characters that their cut out to play, depending on their personality, voice type, acting skills,etc and it just happens that Idina and Eden are very similar. Not to say they are the same, they definitely both have their own personal styles! @hali28target Doing two parts that someone else did isn't copying. Two isn't really a large enough number to constitute a pattern. I love Idina Menzel, but when you actually compare her best performance to Eden Espinosa's average ones, Eden is better--both technically and creatively. The only thing Idina actually has on Eden is her tone.

I'm a contralto when I sing, and I really want to expand my vocal range because I love Broadway and can't hit any of these high notes. Honestly, I think I'm lower than contralto which is sad because contralto is the lowest vocal range for women so I really want to expand it but I can't get a vocal coach. I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips.

@harrypotterwicked lea salonga is actually a professional broadway actress who played Fantine and Eponine in Les Miserables, starred in Miss Saigon and a bunch of other productions. She's actually done some pretty good covers of Wicked songs.
However, I think you mean Lea Michelle who was also on Broadway.... she's ok... but she sounds pretty bad as Elphaba..
Otherwise I agree with you, :) Eden and Elphaba are amazing and NOONE can replace Kristin :)
