Why did they redo this famous tv show? They should've never redo a show that was popular back in 70s and end it in 1977. Taking a break and coming back sometime dosen't always work.
What a stupid show!!! The maid is looking out the window and tells Mary to shhhh? What?.....weren't the able to listen and look at the same time back then?
Mary's singing is damn good, but having it interrupted so much seems like the show is sort of apologizing for it-- it's not good enough to showcase on its own. Mary's voice is certainly better than the nasal honk of Carol Burnett. The heavy-handed use laugh track here doesn't help, because, unlike Mary's successful show, an audience can tell you when something is or isn't funny. As much as I've always loved Mary, she clearly lacked a sense of quality, maybe just got lucky with her sitcom.
@dav1237 Yes, frustrating to hear them make hash out of her song. It's like they wanted it both ways- show that Mary's character was a musical star, but at the same time imply she wasn't really worth hearing.
Thank you for posting this. I remember this when it first aired and long despaired of ever seeing it again. The video quality is also exceptional. Great job!
@trapper721 I'm pretty sure she was on broadway before she began a serious television/movie career but if you watch the Dick Van Dyke show they do some really pretty duets in that :) I LOVE Mary's voice :D
@julie11061 After the DVD Show, Mary did try to be a Broadway star in a musical version of Breakfast at Tiffany's. I believe it closed either out of town, or in B'way previews. There's a story- I don't know if it's true or just a joke- that the show was so bad that when Mary's character Holly says she had a miscarriage, the audience burst into applause. Mary eventually was a B'way hit in "Whose Life Is It Anyway?", but like her "Ordinary People" film hit, it didn't lead to better things.
@defundthewar wow, i think I've heard about the Breakfast at Tiffany's thing but yeah, she sure had a lot of potential but i think she peaked in the Dick Van Dyke Show
@julie11061 I loved her work on Dick's show, but I think she peaked on her own show. The key was the terrific writing, which was missing in her later efforts.
@defundthewar I suppose I don't like the MTM show quite as much just because I'm madly in love with DVD and I wanted them to get married in real life but yeah, the work they did there was fantastic
@ShadyPines7 The bits with Rob and Laura Petrie are good, but the overall level of writing sucks. It's amazing how quickly American TV went downhill in the '70s; the early '80s ("Hill St. Blues," "St. Elsewhere," the first six or seven years of "Cheers," etc.) were sort of a last blaze of glory.... :-(

What's the point of this show? Pretty dumb. Mary is hot, though. I'd "do" her.
