Try using an actually GOOD joystick and play some GOOD game, and you'll see why they used joysticks. You cannot play International Karate or vertical shooters very nicely with the inaccurate short-range THUMB, you need a long range WRIST for that kind of thing - and joystick is good for the corners, which are hard to accurately use with the thumb. Try Competition Pro 5000 for a great joystick, or the X-Arcade (if you can somehow plug it in the C64).. you'll realize how awful gamepads are.

Very nice C64 laptop!!

LOAD command can be short to lO"$",8 (L shift+O)

LIST short version is L shift+i

rU is the short for RUN and so on... ;)
