You can see he is trying to be a big boy and keeping calm for a while, shoulders back and standing straight, then he just breaks down. My parents smoke, and I never started. I begged them to stop for a long time, but its just hopeless. One day I'll feel like this little kid, and thanks to smoking it will only happen sooner than it should.

I actually don't think this is a very effective advertisement at all. Smoking is a complex addiction to give up and I'd also question how this ad was created and the parents who allowed this "child actor" to be put on display like this... it really irritates me and I find it somewhat irresponsible for both the advertiser or sponsor of the ad and the parents... Though I understand all the parameters of what's involved here, I'd also question the tv stations who value revenue over values.

I lost my father to lung cancer due to smoking when I was eight and smoking sucks. I never took up smoking but two of my brothers have. That kid brought back so many memories. He left my mom with six kids - me being #5. I tell everyone who smokes this phrase. "Kissing a smoker is like licking an ashtray". Gross huh!

Oh my goodness I just about bawled like a baby at the look on that little boy's face (I'm wiping away tears even now). There's just no way this child was acting and there's absolutely no justification for intentionally putting this child (he's what...four?) in such a state of fear just to make a point. Extremely poor judgement was used in making this commercial.
if you research the commercial, the child and adult actor are actually son and mother. they had rehearsed what was to happen. while taping, the part of the commercial when the boy turns around,he got disoriented and couldn't see his mom on the set. the commercial was to end only with him looking scared, instead he truly was terrified. the director did nothing to harm him and he was in no danger, it was simply a mishap and the cameras kept rolling.
Donny Deutsch was on the Today Show the other day and said that there was no way that kid was acting. He is an advertising legend and I trust his instinct on this. That said the commercial is impactful and has helped me realize that it's time for me to kick the habit. Wish me luck!!!

I actually don't think this is a very effective advertisement at all. Smoking is a complex addiction to give up and I'd also question how this ad was created and the parents who allowed this "child actor" to be put on display like this... it really irritates me and I find it somewhat irresponsible for both the advertiser or sponsor of the ad and the parents... Though I understand all the parameters of what's involved here, I'd also question the tv stations who value revenue over values.

I lost all four of my grandparents to some form of cancer. 3 of them lung cancer. I only knew one grandfather. I called him PaPa he was my everything if theres an inventor out there can you make some kinda cigeratte that only has nicotine in it so it doesn't hurt the person.......please?

Look at the ads with the people with disfigured
faces or lungs chopped up on a table
and that is worse than anything..
Stop smoking will take 1 or 2 times to try, or it
could take a dozen or more tries to quit smoking.

Wow so many people who don't get it. I guess I will go around and post this. Physically or Mentally abusing or hurting a child to cause pain or ager or fear is WRONG. If you don't get that or see it that way then there is something wrong. Think about it. Edwina Pearce who I guess help produce that commercial is the one who stated the tears and the whole alex issue was real. And the mother and apparently other's think thats OK thing to do to someone especially a child.

I lost my father to lung cancer due to smoking when I was eight and smoking sucks. I never took up smoking but two of my brothers have. That kid brought back so many memories. He left my mom with six kids - me being #5. I tell everyone who smokes this phrase. "Kissing a smoker is like licking an ashtray". Gross huh!

i read it in the News paper. The kid was not acting. it was his real mom and the mom left and right after they were done ran back on to her son.

AGREE, so what they did to the boy (child abuse) to make him SO FEARFUL to CRY and HURT like that, is illegal in the USA!!! I CARE FOR THE BOY!!! Oh my goodness I just about bawled like a baby at the look on that little boy's face (I'm wiping away tears even now). This could just as easily be a commercial about self breast exams or buckling your seatbelt or taking your blood pressure medication or having your cholesterol checked, or any one of the many preventable killers that we're surrounded with every day! I'm not a smoker, but I'm checking my tatas tonight!

Okay...It's not the point to be a realistic situation. The point is that sometimes, mothers do get seperated from their child for a minute or two. It happens all the time in grocery stores and what not...
The point of this is to take note of the child's REACTION.
It's symbolic and not to be taken literally. Jeeze.
I, for one, was very effected by this and it even brought me to tears being that my mother is an avid smoker.

i dont' know why people made a big deal about making a child cry. Movies make kids cry all the time. This just takes it to another level, it's so emotional. I think its great and it'll make a lot of parents rethink smoking.

second that, and at least this was done on a positive look to help people quit smoking... its serious, if u think this part of the kid crying for 10 seconds is such a problem imagine a kid loosing his/her parents for months(at hospital) or for life cause of smoking... no happy ending for them but this kid was fine & happy after the video... How about those kids who are really affected? and you all worrying about a kid in this commercial who goes home happy. come on people, wake up!

There's just no way this child was acting and there's absolutely no justification for intentionally putting this child (he's what...four?) in such a state of fear just to make a point. Extremely poor judgement was used in making this commercial.

if you research the commercial, the child and adult actor are actually son and mother. they had rehearsed what was to happen. while taping, the part of the commercial when the boy turns around,he got disoriented and couldn't see his mom on the set. the commercial was to end only with him looking scared, instead he truly was terrified. the director did nothing to harm him and he was in no danger, it was simply a mishap and the cameras kept rolling.

Donny Deutsch was on the Today Show the other day and said that there was no way that kid was acting. He is an advertising legend and I trust his instinct on this. That said the commercial is impactful and has helped me realize that it's time for me to kick the habit. Wish me luck!!!
