there are only very few players who know how to play a ballad....Art was one of them. He knew how to get the most out of ONE note....
After Charlie parker not many alto players impress me...except Art...and...Desmond..Lee konitz and may be Phil Woods....I'm sure there are many more good ones...but ARt was in a class ALL by himself.
You need to see this great documentary to appreciate the full story behind this heartwrenching tune. In short, it's about his estranged daughter, Patricia. A very good version of this is on a solid record of his - "Today".
The sound on this is awfully funky, draggy. The real thing can be heard in Don Mcglynn's documentary, Art Pepper, notes from a jazz survivor. The song is "Patricia." Don has posted a clip on youtube.
Well thank you for the upload, the only other songs I have heard with this amount of emotion are chet baker tunes, Billie Holidays "Autumn in New York" and Oscar Petersons- You go to my head
@45onelove45: It is beautiful. You're hearing one of Arts incredible beautiful intros, leading into "Patricia" the theme of which starts at about 1:36. There's a beautiful song. About 10 minutes long on "Art Pepper Today," 1979
Just saw the film about Art Pepper on Netflix... it is just amazing. He's amazing.

I love the way Art played ballads. There's a great version of But Beautiful on one of the Village Vanguard recordings. Raw emotion.
