A beautiful and haunting track from U2. Perfect song to listen to while your driving at night under the stars. Its a real pity that the band never played this live, it would have been an absolute classic.
i went from thinking it was "one step closer to norway".. to "one step closer to nowhere".. to "one step closer to nothing".. then finally. "one step closer to knowing." :) gotta love that irish accent.
If this had segued into Streets during the Vertigo tour, this may have been AMAZING. Imagine if you will, a dark stage with smoke blowing, a faint spot lit on Bono...a quiet arena, a modest moment for Bono, almost self reflecting, as he stares out into a sea of lighters & cell phones, as the song begins to wind down, we hear a familiar synth, as it turns from a dark blue stage into a gradual red glowing screen that becomes Where the Streets Have No Name...
"my fingers still red with the prick of any old rose". Talk about a poetic lyric that relates to anyone who has an old love they can't forget. Pure Genious!!!!
@joecadge ""One Step Closer" is billed in the album with thanks to Noel Gallagher of Oasis. The title of the song comes from a conversation Bono had with Gallagher about Bono's dying father, Bob Hewson. Bono asked, "Do you think he believes in God?" to which Gallagher replied, "Well, he's one step closer to knowing.""
anyone on here who says that they actually like U2 is actually bullshitting, because all you fuckers flocked to hear this because of Maddox's post. I'm guilty of it myself. haha XD
something tells me u2 is more than just the 4, something bigger than the band, as there is always a 5th wheel that imparts a finishing touch, maybe even a 6th or seventh wheel, and then, it is not just their music, but their cause and purpose. lillywhite, lanois, and of course eno. i'm reggae if your reggae
This is such an amazing track. I have to believe all the "I only like early U2" people out there didn't take the time to listen to the albums and just judged the new work on the singles they heard on the radio. I'm 29 and grew up with the early u2 as a child, still say Unforgettable Fire is my favorite album, but they are still writing amazing songs and I feel sad for those who are too blind to enjoy them. It's hard to think of a band like U2 having underrated tracks, but this one will be.
Yep. It's true. This is a complete album. Very well constructed and thoughtful from start to finish. This band is and will be the measuring stick by which many current and future bands will be compared for decades to come. Me, I just love the music. Thanks, U2.
I know that joke was written by maddox. Please oh please tell me something I don't fucking know! It just summed up the album so effectively I had to say it. Go figure!

Wow! you used the word "nimwit." Although, I do admire that you coherently responded back to me. This proves that you aren't at the shit age of 10-17 which means I should probably respect you for being intelligent. So I will. You are welcome to use any already used joke that you wish to use.
Why thank you, not only do I feel extra-specially-good at being lauded for my ancient expressions...but I think i've just been called intelligent! Rich coming from you, dont-ya think? You don't seem halfway horrid yourself. I'm tired with the old jokes, and i'm tired of this fucking site. I'm gonna go eat some sauerkraut. Feel welcome to abuse my odd sauerkraut-eating tendencies.
Like you, I also enjoy a nice bowl of sauerkraut. Man, we have way too much in common. you're a cool guy, therefore, we must hang out sometime. Good luck with the saurkraut.
Well, i usually eat it unceremoniously out of a big jar with a plastic fork left over from chinese takeaway or something. It's one of the finer points of my day when someone shares my love of sauerkraut.
That is amazing. No, I have absolutely nothing against the British. In fact, if America goes to hell because of our next president, Britain is the first place I would think to move to. And you are correct. I know nothing about boroughs. But, it is something I should probably look into. I'm astounded by this. I never would have thought for you to be British. Again, that is amazing.
We are the only beings that can create such sounds given to us by the angels. To fight over who is lame or not as far as a band or likes and dislikes goes completely against the point and privilege we have to hear music regardless of genre or what anyone favors. Music is music and we have preferences. The beauty lies within the note and not the genre. U2 has a beautiful sound that is heaven to my ears and maybe not yours but it is respected.
The title of this great song comes from a conversation Bono had with Gallagher about Bono's dying father, Bob Hewson. Bono asked, "Do you think he believes in God? to which Gallagher replied, "Well, he's one step closer to knowing"
Actually, I enjoy a lot of Soundgarden, Les Claypool, Metallica, Tool...
and that's not all- I also Enjoy Jack Johnson, Fiona Apple, and people who can write intelligent and thought provoking lyrics without being a large douchebag for bragging about them.
When all is said and done U2 will leave all of those artists in the dust - whether you like it or not. Their music IS great - AND the amount of music that they have written that is great is seemingly endless. They've already exceeded the greatness of the Beatles. Their music has tremendous depth to it - it really touches their fan in ways that other bands don't. NO band compares to U2. Not one. Pity the fools that don't get them - one day they'll get it and U2 will be history.
Anyone that can appreciate a band as lame as Nirvana and can't find a single thing to like about a band obviously as great as U2 is is just an idiot. They didn't get to be the greatest, biggest, most popular band in rock today for no reason.
twochord has you dead to rights mate. give it up. what he said was true and the fact is U2 started being mentioned along side the Beatles years ago and their body of work has surpassed the liverpool 4. only sentiment keeps it from being uninanimous.... It must suck being you because U2 owns the genre of rock and have since the mid-eighties. The Clash handed them the title, "The Only Band That Matters." Too true.
Wow, I completely agree with you. I'm thirteen, and all my friends say I'm so retro for my favorite band being U2, but I find that U2 is really one of the last bands in the world left that have lyrics and meanings in the songs that REALLY matter and actually MEAN something..
Well you keep it up and never doubt yourself - you're 10 steps ahead of other people your age. Don't let anyone try to convince you that some other lame band is even half as good as U2!
listen guys dont talk rubish..just go to the straight point...Bono is the second highest doner in the world after bill gates!!...do i need to say anythn after that!!!!

This really is a special, special album.
It deals with everything that is real, has lyrics we can all apply to ourselves and a deep rooted, very real charge of emotion.
Sometimes people say U2 aren't what they once were.
I'd put this up there with the finest material they have ever done.
