@jimeerey I haven't tried it with a pick. I'm not a pick player. I have a few picks lying around somewhere, though. Playing with a pick versus playing with your fingers usually gives you more bite - a more aggressive sound, as the "attack" on the string is different. I figure it would have that same effect on this bass.
@3234718 I thought the same thing when I saw the U-Bass. The thing is, I don't think the U was around 2 years ago when I got this. If it was, I didn't know about it yet. Plus, this is cheaper than a U. Sucks to be poor. LOL!
@GORFF987 No. They're specially made silicone rubber strings. They wouldn't work on any other bass. Well, maybe one with piezo pickups...I'm not too knowledgeable in the field of pickups and electronics. But, of course you need metal strings if your bass has regular (magnetic) pickups.
Hey man. Cool stuff, this sounds great. It puts out quite a bit on the low end. Have a couple of questions though. Hows the sustain on the thing? And I understand that picking style is not as good, but do you think I could get away with picking with my finger (I mean like shaping my finger like a pick and playing) and it turn out alright? Thanks and can't wait to hear back.
@m776revenant The strings are made of silicone rubber. As such, they have a lot more 'give' than metal strings. I don't think that technique would be easy to achieve. Nothing's impossible with a LOT of practice, I guess. But it doesn't seem like it lends itself to that approach.
@DACHANCE28 It does sound like a normal electric bass guitar. I'm willing to bet money that you wouldn't tell the difference if you took a blindfold test and someone played this bass and then a regular bass guitar. I'd likely fail that test as well, except I would *expect* to fail it, even though I've been a bass player for almost 19 years (I'm 36 now - I was 34 when I made this video.)
@hecbiz75 thank you brother, you have really changed my mind on what bass i want to buy, but i have another q, if you were needing to buy a new bass to play in a band, what bass would you buy??
@DACHANCE28 I haven't owned that many basses, even though I've been playing now for almost 19 years. I had a Carvin fretless that was absolutely amazing. I then went for an Ibanez SRX 390 - cool bass, with action as low as any. I then got an Aria IGB-49, which I still have. It's possibly the easiest bass to play, ever. I recently got me a Traben Havoc (check my newer videos). The playability is just a hair below the Aria, but the sound and look are fantastic. There you go. :-) Out of space.
@DACHANCE28 By the way, the Ibanez appears in this video, as well as some of my older ones. But, overall, the Traben is the best, right up there with the Carvin, but they're different animals.
@hecbiz75 dang thats not bad at all !! but hey would you mind putting an instructional on how to play the first part of that metalica bit that you played in here ??
@DACHANCE28 It's just your usual gallopy metal riff. I use 3 fingers, which makes it easier. I don't think I can do a video soon. I got too much going on...recording my original songs in the studio, work, etc. Sorry!
@1337CL4N Nope. Plugs into any amp using standard instrument cables. I mean, you obviously want a bass amp, not a guitar amp. This thing puts out quite a bit of low end. :-)
@pyrofalkon5 I don't think so. The bridge will not really accept regular strings. Plus, the plastic tuning pegs would probably not fare too well with metal strings.
@bassplayrCL I did slap on it in the vid around the 2:56 mark. It's not the best thing for that, but it can be done. The webcam mic distorted, though.
@Rushworshiper92 The bass is no toy. It sounds pretty well, and if you weren't looking at it and just hearing it, you could easily think it's a full-sized bass.
@hecbiz75 Lol You got the wrong idea, YOU said "whip this toy out" in the video...I just made it sound dirty lol. I realize it's an actual bass and wasn't putting the bass down at all.
@porcuspine Well, I don't think you'd wanna make it your main bass. After the 5th or 7th position the notes start getting way too close. As you go further up, it becomes almost impossible to finger notes accurately. But, it's a nice instrument to have to use on ocassion, or for a short tune or something.
I'm no expert on the Ashbory (and to be honest, I've barely used it since I got it), but the somewhat weak-looking plastic tuning keys do not lend themselves to anything but those specific silicone strings.
Slapping is not so good. I mean, imagine silicone strings smacking against a plastic-like flat (no frets) fingerboard. Doesn't quite provide the recipe for a good slap sound, ya know?
How does it sound with a pick

It looks extremely uncomfortable. Then again my main bass is an epiphone explorer so this thing is tiny compared to that.

Yes, it's worthwhile, but when you're used to a real bass guitar it the rubbery strings might drive you nuts. I use it for playing dub a lot.

There is no truss rod in the neck. Putting normal strings would most likely snap it in half.
