  • I think it's actually kind of tedious to learn an instrument through music education. It makes it feel like homework - it takes away the spontaneity and fun of learning by experimentation. It gives you a rigid, linear form to follow.

Just pick up a guitar or a pair of sticks and screw around. Make noise, be creative.

I think more focus should be placed on artistic expression than simply being "a more efficient" musician. Creativity and charisma is what makes these drummers so likeable.

  • Was Turncrantz's interview done in one of the back rooms at the 930 club in DC? I swear I recognize those walls. hahaha sounds weird, but it's true.

  • @AStaticCharacter Exactly right!

  • @YogritMUN Ah, dammit! That means I missed a Russian Circles show! D:

  • I like the end. Drumming IS SUBJECTIVE. However to add a little, musicianship is a universal theme describing someone who has a connection with sound and can relay that connection to other people.

  • Dave is awesome, though can't help but notice his eye. Anybody know how that effects his vision, was just wondering? Still doesn't effect his ability to make great sounds though.

  • I've definitely seen the types of drummers he is talking about...but there are schooled drummers who really play with great feel and soul. Brian Viglione is one of my favorite examples of a schooled musician who just plays like he's possessed live.

  • I've seen a lot of great drummers live and i'm telling you he was the best.even better than gavin harrison.

  • @kostasael2 him and Gavin Harrison have to be my 2 favourite drummers ever

  • been drumming since 2002, bought an electronic kit, roland V-clubs.

self taught but was musicaly inclined from high school band.

    play piano and guitar.

the electronic kits have a variety of sounds. I think they are easier to play but don't have quite the bounce. mine are like rubber practice pads , but I hear they have mesh heads now, what ever that is.

I think at some point you find out "I suck at drumming" when you stumble onto someone who's a 6th degree black belt on the drums. whaah!!!

  • Dave Turncrantz is a kickass drummer

  • Awesome and enjoyable video. I like your openess and appreciation for multiple styles. Its tight.

  • Where is all the footage of Dave Turncrantz from on this video? I've seen the part 1 of the interview in another video but I want the whole thing!

    Awesome vid man.

  • The other parts are up :)

  • While Dave is a great drummer, i disagree with that education will make you a stale drummer. Education just equips you and what you do with it is on you, not the education

  • This is true, however one must consider the a trained drummer's thought process as compared to a self taught drummer's thought process. The self taught drummer has no techniques to adhere to, whereas a trained drummer will naturally use what he is taught and apply it to the music. I could easily be wrong, but just a thought.

  • that is true as well, what it comes down to is the drummer. Some will react to training in this way, and some will not, most will lie in-between.

  • @YogritMUN There's no such thing as a self taught musician; To be that you'd have to learn as if you're in a white cell with nothing in it. Every musician will use what they have LEARNED; IT IS necessary to learn/accredit your craft i.e. be educated, but being educated doesn't teach you how to be a musician, theres no school for that; It is self-learned, not self taught. Also technique is not a free pass to musicianship; its a way to be a better one, so your right and wrong in a sense.

  • @JazzieIQ Well, you are making it an issue of semantics now. We have different definitions of "self-taught". Yours seems to be more literal, mine more figurative. I mean "self-taught" in a way that you have no formal training. Turncrantz is just that. Of course, he had to take in influence from the world around him, just as everyone does with everything, but I never got any formal training on how to crawl as an infant.

  • @harveyn590 I agree with Yogrit and you Harveyn. I think that education does make you stale after a certain point in being taught. I think that being taught basic techniques, and then continuing with self teaching is the best way to become a great drummer.

Education I think leads to subconciously using someone elses technique and style without even thinking of it. I definitely prefer self teaching but that's just my two cents : ) cheers for Dave Turncrantz

  • Really great video man, props.

  • hug

  • Fantastic interview ,never knew what a drudge was now I do great video!

  • Dave Turncrantz is one of the most original sounding drummers making music right now, I'm my opinion. It makes sense that he has such little formal training, his playing style is so fierce and unpredictable. People are not taught to play like how he plays, he made his own rules.

    Awesome video!

  • nice video! I agree to. I think that some mainstream drummers are a bit to controled and personlly i like the feeling of " Where the hell is this going.".

    Once again, Great Video!

  • Fantastic interview. Interesting perspectives from two very skilled individuals. Dave is a terrific drummer, and a big influence to me, as far as drums go.

  • this was great first veiw
