A URSS invadiu a Alemanha, como retaliação da invasão alemã a URSS. Portanto, não generalize "destruição de um continente", com a invasão de um unico pais. A diferença entre "invasão de um país" com a "destruição de um continente" é imensa.

De fato, invadir um país é bem diferente de devastar um continente, como a Espanha fez na maior parte da América, por exemplo. Mas quando se fala da invasão à Alemanha na II Guerra, fala-se também de um massacre, um extermínio verdadeiramente desnecessário, vide bombardeios de Dresden e Bremen. Existe um livro interessante sobre isso chamado 'Holocausto: Judeu ou Alemão?'
Já ouviu falar no Plano Morgenthau?
Sem mencionar que o Stalin matou muito mais soviéticos que os alemães...

Quanto a devastar a Europa, eu quero dizer em relação às consequências.
A verdade é que a Alemanha era, bem ou mal, a única potência nacionalista na Europa, e sua derrota e ocupação enfraqueceu o nacionalismo em países de menos peso, como Portugal, Bulgária e Itália, bem como em todo o continente.
A longo prazo, não se enfraqueceram apenas os nacionalismos, mas essencialmente as Nações, haja vista a situação atual.
