In response to @25Busterdog's comment regarding the RoI keeping the names and traditions of those wonderful old Irish regiments following independence.
Of course they couldn't have kept the 'Royal' prefix or 'Royalist' devices on their Colours, badges, etc., though they could have kept the Regiments going as the vibrant Irish fighting units they were. Just my humble opinion.
Very few soldiers are political, they fight for their Regiment and their friends within the regiment.
In perspective, the actual soldiers of the british army need to be pitied.
Over half of British Army recruits have only the basic skills expected of a 12 yr old. And disgracefully up to 9% were at the standard expected of 7 and 8-year-old children.

By then he was the youngest Wing Commander in the RAF commanding 3 squadrons. With 32 German aircraft shot down he was the highest scoring RAF pilot in the Battle of Britain.

Wonderful old regiments, what a pity successive governments robbed them of their old identities. Inniskillings, Ulster Rifles, and Irish Fusiliers.
An even greater pity Eire didn't keep the original Royal Irish Regiment, Connaughts, Munster, Leinsters and Dublin's. traditions, names and battle honours going following independence.
@rustyjames761 youll be training and living with people from ages 17 onwards, there is not a separate unit for certain ages to go. I joined when I was 18 and there were guys that were late 20s and early 30s.
@rustyjames761 Those 18 year olds have worked just as hard to join the regiment as you would have. Some of those 18-20 year olds will already have served in Afghanistan/Iraq and sacrificed much to server their country. They deserve every bit of respect as anyone else, and if you join the army with the attitude you have at the moment, you won't last long at all.
@25Busterdog .Because they were regiments formed to serve the British Crown and were seen as a representation of that hated establishment. Don't forget, Britain was our enemy (at the time). So why would the Free State of Ireland incorporate such formations in the newly formed army? No tears were shed by the Irish people when they disappeared from the country. Although I must admit, I quite like the idea of naming our military formations rather than the existing numerical system.

They went back to Ireland & lorries were waiting to meet them. One of them told me 50 yrs ago "We defeated the IRA, we didn't feck about like the British we just shot the bastards". Read Kenneths Griffiths "Curious Journey" a very pro IRA book with a series of fawning interviews with IRA veterans for confirmation.

German is thought it Irish schools as a 3rd language so I doubt many Irish would complain if Germany ran things since 1945 the country might be in better order now if they did, besides they run Europe now anyway we are all under their boot in the EU.

Some of those 18-20 year olds will already have served in Afghanistan/Iraq and sacrificed much to server their country. @25Busterdog .Because they were regiments formed to serve the British Crown and were seen as a representation of that hated establishment. Don't forget, Britain was our enemy (at the time). So why would the Free State of Ireland incorporate such formations in the newly formed army? No tears were shed by the Irish people when they disappeared from the country. Although I must admit, I quite like the idea of naming our military formations rather than the existing numerical system.

They went back to Ireland & lorries were waiting to meet them. One of them told me 50 yrs ago "We defeated the IRA, we didn't feck about like the British we just shot the bastards". German is thought it Irish schools as a 3rd language so I doubt many Irish would complain if Germany ran things since 1945 the country might be in better order now if they did, besides they run Europe now anyway we are all under their boot in the EU.

@grobo11 hitler when trying to devise his setup in nazi germany turned to empires of the past for a model. He took the roman sense of ceremony n splendour and used many british notions such as the concentration camps they used to put boers in and there are documents that show he got inspiration for the SS and secret police from the black and tans in ireland and the british colonial forces in india

The SS were not at all inspired by the Black and Tans or anything else; they were a unique organization that arose out of the NSDAP. Hitler and the Nazis certainly admired the British Empire, which proves nothing except that the British Empire was efficiently administered and well-run. If you are trying to prove a point about empire or that somehow Nazism was inspired by British imperialism then you haven't presented any convincing argument in that direction beyond speculative irrelevancies.

Frankly, your attempt to lump the British Empire in with Nazi Germany is like trying to lump the American Revolution with the French Revolution. One admired or derived something from the other, but that does not mean that the excesses of Nazi Germany or the French Revolution implied excesses by the British Empire or the American Revolutionaries. Your reasoning falls short.

@TashkentFox eh fallaballah dosen't mean clear the way! it actually dosent mean anything!!! The Irish term is 'Fág an Bealach' fág meaning leave/clear (in this case clear because of the ending) and an Bealach = the way. You may as be shouting cowboys and indian chants!! Is this what your taught?? As I said below this isn't a real Irish Regiment.
