really well done..there's nothing wrong with being inspired by other works, or feeling like you want to recreate awesome art...now you can't really sell it but, the trial and error of making reflections or creating fur or whatever you do, will just in the long run make you a better artist every day.... if I'm bored, I find something really cool, and see if I can recreate it or put my own spin on it...it all goes into my original character design....and there's no better inspiration then Miyazaki
The only bad thing is that a lot of artists need other people to give them something/idea to draw, so I who owns that? I came from learning filmmaking and photography and came into pure illustrative art and the lack of ownership really scared the Hell out of me.
i have been listening to this podcast for the last few days. how on point and real this is...THANK YOU BOBBY for speaking from your HEART! you are inspiring people; especially and specifically ME (a 42 year old artist, working day and night to be liberated from my HR career, and begin to live my life off of my art).
It's just so sad that schools just concentrate on art techniques but totally disregards the "business" side of the art industry. New grads only know so little about the business that they struggle thus the term "starving artist". I believe students like me must be aware of this!
Wow this is really a great video. I think you have a lot of good input for how to be a successful artist and I'm super inspired right now. Also great painting! (digital imaging, whatever people call it, it still takes pure skill and talent) Thanks Bobby!
I'm only 16, and i've already been suggested to do a coloring book ^^ I think it's a great idea, and it would let me do my own thing. Though now i am also doing 5-dollar comissions, and alot of people seem suprisingly interested ^^ I'm going the right way, even though i've only been drawing for 4 years. These advises are very inspiring, especially because you're a known artist and you know what you're talking about! ^^ Thanks for being inspiring!
What on earth? I mean, I definitely appreciate your well-thought out ideas about financial security, but why do that here? Just caught me off guard, that's all...
you wrok is wonderful ... and i apreciate your had work .. but .. if you express a bit what are u doing and what brushes are u using would make it more understandable ...
first and foremost, pretty good Dpainting, but as odd as it was when you started out, speaking about financial ingenuity and ways to continue art progression. I believe you hit some really good points throughout your discussion, personally I have dealt with the majority of plausible issues you mentioned when focusing on art. I guess I am only taking this time to respond and comment to you because I feel that you sounded unsure of what audience you might be addressing, so thanks for your time.
You're absolutely right. And in this art business, being good, in general, isn't enough. Being able to support your living and dreams with just one job you have to be exceptionally good. Not good. Because EVERYONE who do this are at least good. You have to be really.. Unique and professional and the job would need to be quite steady. There is luck involved, but no one should rely on it. Expand your work field. Don't tire yourself, but be wise and.. vigilant. Your passion to art is enough.
my dream is to move to germany and master the piano. to do this i'm saving 20 percent of all my pay checks til i'm fourty. i'm only 19. i won't fail this dream cause i won't fail myself. it's my only life long dream. i'll see it to the end.
everything looks really good but her nose and mouth are a little small...just constructive criticism. i am also an artist...and i love princess mononoke ^,^
Makes alot of sense to me man! I am a student right now and this is really good advice for when i hit the professional world. Thanks for talking about this.
I like thinking about these things while watching artists paint, do some more!
i know that's how i feel as an artist iam still young but i would live just to do art it would great if i got some money to that is the reason i don't illegally look at manga because i respect the artist but a lot of people don't get it
o_o That was amazing!! I love seeing other artist's processes! Thanks for sharing this with us!! :-) You make digital drawing look so easy (though I know it's not).
It's still a pleasure to see this podcast. It's very interesting. It's very kind to share your experience with us not a lot of people are like you I really enjoy that.
I hopeyou to come next year to Angouleme, so I could have new little cute drawings from you and Kei Acedera ^^
awesome!! simple thanks Bobbi, for sharing your experiences, lectures, but especially for the encouragement telling things how really are and work within the industry in order to keep stand by.
The art's great, but I faved this video because of what he said in it. I really felt i was one of the only few artists who felt this way. that might seem a little obnoxious but thats how i felt..
Im so glad such an experienced artist believes these things.
Hio, I think you have to open (at least 2) projects, then push the Arrange Documents button (you can see it in the video on the upper bar. It looks like a little window, second from the end). Press that, then on the drop-down menu, select > Fill In All Windows. That'll break up your windows individually in the Photoshop CS5 suite so you can work on one, and see whatever else you have open.
@segajin With an open image selected choose Window> Arrange> New Window (the original file name will be listed). The same image will now appear in a new second window.
@segajin you problably figured out by now but to anyone who has the same doubt, just click and drag the window away from its "stuck" position into the workspace, now you can have multiple windows open at once.
With an open image selected choose Window> Arrange> New Window (the original file name will be listed). The same image will now appear in a new second window.
Drag one of the windows out of the tab bar, and resize how you like it
I 100% agree with your statements Bobby. Why shouldn't artists like anyone other person have "piece of mind" so they don't have to worry about their future. I think to have that "purist" mentality about being an artist is both naive and self-destructive. And your right artists due get screwed with intellectual properties. But I have to disagree about writers..they may get residuals but not very much. They get screwed too by the networks. Great vid, btw.I love your conversational-way of teaching!
It was very nice! You made it seem easy to paint! It was almost perfect, the only thing I noticed was that her face is a little bit too fat. But it's beautifall. The economy speech as nothing to do with San, although it sounds wise. While painting her, you could speak about ecology or something like that. But who am I to say this? I don't understand nothing about economy, I'm just 15 years old.
Good podcast, i think it's important to send this message. Luckily i already do, coming from a family where job security is very important im going to take those values and apply it to an art career. You're promoting what, in the 70's we in the UK called an 'enterprise culture'. Who PM Thatcher also, like you, thought it's good protection against recession.
He is so right... I would love to stay home and do art like i used to in college. Unfortunately I need to pay the bills, and now I'm stuck in a 9-5 in NYC with a long commute and no time to do any work. My art has greatly suffered... makes me upset.
Hey Bobby. Thanks so much for continuing to put out your podcasts. Always helpful.
Question: What do you know about copyright as it applies to reference images used in the creation of a piece of artwork? What about "derivative" works? What about making your own versions of other people's characters (such as your Mononke painting)?
I've heard and read a few things but most of the info. seemed rather vague. Perhaps you could raise the issue in your next podcast. Thanks again for all your help.
Brilliant work, and thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm a musician, not an artist, but a lot of what you've said applies to anyone trying to make their way in the creative fields - really interesting.
This was GREAT! I loved watching you draw/paint and i also loved the information you shared! thank you so much, this will be useful in more ways then one :)
This podcast really helped me out and gave me more confidence that I'm already on the right path when it comes to reaching my dreams.
I was wonderful to watch you paint during the podcast. Princess Mononoke is a wonderful movie and I like that the feel of your podcast was about freedom and not giving up even though the economy or middle man gets you down. Kind of like the highlights of Princess Mononoke in a way~ lol
You have to realize that being a video game artist is the same as being the kind of artist that Bobby is. He's an illustrator, working to envision ideas.
I thought he was speaking of fine art? Where you paint whatever you want. Game artist, you're told some general idea of what they want to create, right?
I agree with you. I was going to leave my domain , art, because of this economy crisis, lack of money and instability. I'm doing 3D right now but I'm also good in languages (I know 7 languages). But after a few weeks of really thinking it over I realized that I can't do that. Even if it will be tough I decided to stay and struggle until the end until I find fun jobs in my domain that will provide me with money in the same time on the long run.

Your art is awesome! I didn't listen to what you said about.. jobs.. but I reconized that you told about arms when ou was coloring or whatever her arms xD that was the only thing I was listening to..
and THANK YOU for showing me a way to draw without lines <3
WOw! You are a great teacher. Thank you so much for sharing the knowledge you have earned. You make such good sense and clarify the issues or art, how to make it, how to continue making it, and practical encouragement. Thank you for your encouragement, even though you don't know me, you speak to me. Thanks Bobby.
I'm a sophomore attending an art college, and Bobby is absolutely right about getting financially stable. Can't get too greedy. It's always about what you want to do, not for the money! Very inspirational and very engaging. Thank you!
amongst the humongous load of useless narcissistic uninterested crappy bullshits that the web generates, some things are shining like beacons as they are the exact opposite.
I completely agree with your statement about financial security for artist. This is something that has been brooding in my mind for a while now, and it's a coincidence that you've said what I've been fighting about. I think it's very inspirational and motivating. Thanks for posting this. I think the #1 thing art students don't learn in school is how to conduct business with art, which I find disappointing. But hopefully this post will educate artist even a little.
I am currently in the process of re evaluating my financial situation and options and wouldn't you know it...licensing is something I've been lookin into for about a month now hahaha
I have a great site for you that deals with that stuff if you're interested :)
just email me or send a note on Deviantart or facebook or whatever
Very well timed as I want to try to conquer freelance illustration this year...and just watched Princess Mononoke. Thanks for always being awesome and feeding me inspiration. Thank you!

Thank you!

amongst the humongous load of useless narcissistic uninterested crappy bullshits that the web generates, some things are shining like beacons as they are the exact opposite.
this podcast is one of them.
Thanks.
