FYI, their "best show" was in 1975 at 27th and Vincente, SF - a free concert, the same day that Led Zeppelin canceled their SF show. The out of tonwers were mightily impressed with HT!
The Airplane, Hot Tuna, Jefferson Starship, and the Papa John Creech band existed for a few years during the same time frame, staring around 1970.
One interview I remember Marty Balin told was when forming the Jefferson Airplane that he asked Paul Kantner who that guy was, Paul said that is Jorma Kaukonen a friend of mine but he is just too good of a guitarist for your band, Marty said that's exactly what I want!
another group that "played like this" wa cream: bass, lead and drums, a power trio, jst like h.t.. zz top , rush. but hot tuna retained the sanfrancisco sound, which i discovered in 1967, and never let go. those were the days.
their best show hands down, 1976 Saturday night 12:00 am.(late show) Thanksgiving weekend in NYC at the Pallidium 6.5 hrs. Everyone from SUNY at New Paltz all colleges were present!!! You know who you all are!
I just wanted all Hot Tuna fans to know that Hot Tuna will soon be visiting Long Island, on the waterfront at Shorefront Park in Patchogue.
They are performing July 15th 2011 along with over 35 other performers that weekend. There will be plenty of other rock, jam, folk, blues & “Americana” genres as well. Definitely check it out, there’s more information on the Great South Bay Music Festival website!!!
I'm 16, and I fucking love this band and this song. it pisses me of that almost nobody my age knows Hot Tuna and these good old American bands. I asked all my friends if they'd ever heard of the grateful dead, and only like 3 of them did. Spread the word!
Yes, I was there for it all...they got a lot of airplay in the mid-70's...they were one of my faves at the time...most memorable was a free concert in SF in '75 ('76?) at the park at 27th and Vicente. They did rock...
We used to see them at the long island arena in the 70s they would play from 9 pm to 3 am non stop best band in the world. Long live Jorma they still got it too just as tight and sound great.
@bugeyedfool1 So true bro, Seen the there many times and if memory serves me right (big if!) it was like 1974 thru 1977 when I seen them there. Like you said shows were hours long and only about $5.00 !! You got your money's worth of some great sound outta a trio.
can someone please guide me? Is this Hot Tuna and if so, when, where and... como se llama? Jack and Jorma were part of the Airplane back then....right?
@stubbypeeps - This was Jack and Jorma after the Airplane. I think Hot Tuna was formed when the Airplane was still a band. But the bulk of their work as a band came after the Airplane broke up...
@Libertine62 Tuna was formed as an acoustic/electric side project for Jorma and Jack during the Airplane years(who had played together long before Airplane). They have morphed, broken up, come back together, added and subtracted members, but the basics, Jorma and Jack, remain.
I saw them at Parade Field in Minneapolis, July 1975 - they opened with this song. They were pretty high (I saw Jorma dropping backstage), and I got a headache from too many cigarettes. Passed by Jack in the crowd as he sucked on a Bomb Pop. They were using some pieces from the Grateful Dead's "Wall" sound system. It was so loud! Pretty all-time.
Saw them last night (Aug 21, 2009) at the Warner Theater in Torrington, CT. They actually opened the show and Little Feat closed it. Hot Tuna was oustanding...if you get a chance to see them DO NOT pass it up.
@Libertine62 So true. I've seen them at least 3 times at a place called the birchmere in Virginia. You sit down, eat and watch them play. Acoustic or electric, they're incredible. And now they're coming out with a new album. Last one came out when I was just born. Can't wait to hear it and see them again
i got to meet jack a few years ago when he was touring with marty & paul of J.A. really cool guy. wish i coulda seen the boys at their best. HOT TUNA IS THE GREATEST ROCK & BLUES BAND! PERIOD.
re: seeing Hot Tuna in Passaic: I saw them in around 1976 at the Palladium (E. 14 St.). My friend was a huge fan - I'm still more a fan of fusion and progressive rock. They were excellent - Jack Cassady's bass was booming deep. The only thing I disliked was what most Tuna fans loved - they just didn't know how to end a song - every song would continue for 30 minutes with 10 different ending crescendos followed by 10 more Jorma solos and then a few more endings before if FINALLY ended. :)
any chance you were at the show that journey opened up at the acadamy of music in 75?
we had some opiated hash going around in the bathroom- we had a line going out the door waiting for a hit of this shit- couldn't take a toke without coughing you're brains out-

I was not only at that show (shows really, as they would always do early and late shows at the Academy), I have cassette tapes of it. The quality is not A+, but the memories - such as are left of those braincells - are!
I was not only at that show (shows really, as they would always do early and late shows at the Academy), I have cassette tapes of it. The quality is not A+, but the memories - such as are left of those braincells - are!
@purpledynasty -- I had a recording of that Palladium '76 show (believe it was broadcast live on 102.7 WNEW) on, oddly enough, 8-track tape and played the thing to death as a teen! Unadulterated guitar rock, pure and simple. Also loved the double live LP "Double Dose" for the playing, song selection and sound reproduction, kinda unique production quality.
@purpledynasty--Not quite sure what you mean about the way Tuna ends songs, though. They can jam out a tune with the best of them, but when it comes to belaboring an ending, nobody comes close to the Allman Bros, geez! Sometimes more than half of the song Whipping Post is faux ending, often to the point of annoyance...IMHO.
@purpledynasty--Have seen many Tuna/Jorma shows over the years, first being solo Jorma in the late 70's at a rather small club in Bergenfield, NJ then called Circus Circus where I actually sat my ass on the short stage and snapped photos of Jorma close up (w/o flash, of course). Most recently was Hot Tuna (w/Barry Mitterhoff) last Fri, Oct 1, 2010 at the Uptown Theater in Napa, CA. At 70, Jorma still rocks, and Jack is thumpin' and stompin" as hard as ever.
Those sites are so incredibly cluttered with ads and circuitous. At least classical tabs can be gotten free without all the junk and low quality (ie on Weed's site).
this was the first group i ever saw live, in 1975 in new jersey, they played 4 hours i think. does anyone have the rock concert show from 1975? i think they shared the show with reo speedwagon.
Damn I would love to see that myself. I hope somebody does have it and would consider posting it... :-)
This song was actually used as exit music for for a while for Don Kirshner's Rock Concert show...I remember because I used to watch it all the time in the 70's. Hot Tuna is a quintessential "70's band" in my mind whenever I think back to the decade.

Had all of their albums back in the day. There name was actually "Hot Fuckin' Tuna." Record companies made them clean it up. Awesome and underrated band. Their concerts could, and did, go on for 6 hours. Bob Steeler, their drummer, was a wild man. Great band.
Cool! I never knew that. Thanks for the info! Did you ever hear the song "Feels So Good" on Jefferson Airplane's Thirty Seconds Over Winterland album? To me, this was a preview of what would become Hot Tuna. Great, great jam session. Thanks again. Peace.
