I mean everybody knows that a few years ago a dad killed his daughter just because she was raped!!!! I cant understand why they change things. Why not just stick to the true story. The book is brilliant. Why make up an ending that he kills that guard and walks out of the front door when he actualy was in prison on an island and he stole a fishing boat and rowed away. Little things too like in this trailer it says he was 20 years old. In his book it clearly says he was 23 when he was arrested. He'd also smuggled hash 3 times before! It was his 4th time. Although he has only just admitted this.

Why is Billy Hayes treated like a hero. He was a DRUG smuggler, drugs which ruins lives and fuels criminals. He deserved what he got (perhaps not a life time sentence but he deserved the rest). Idiot.
I just watched parts of this movie and i have to say that as a Turk i didn't understand any of what those so-called Turks said in the movie. They all speak like if they were Greeks or Kurds. Is there even 1 Turk in the whole movie? And i may have to add that if you would've said "nation of pigs" in the '70s or even '90s in a court, you would've been hanged. (Because of the next trial for insulting the Republic of Turkiye or Turkish heritage in general) The death penalty was abolished in 2004.
Actually I like this movie a lot, but that doesn't mean that I believe that all people from Turkey are bad or disgusting people. I enjoy this film as a piece of art and entertainment, but I know that Alan Parker took many liberties from the book. And actually while I love cinema I must say that is ridiculous to take a movie so seriously. I love Midnight Express, but I know that Turkey is a great country as well as a great culture.
This movie was highly distorted and doesn't depict Turkey in a true way, this film was made to please the average Americans who perceive foreign cultures with sadism. If anyone wants to see Turkey in the 1970s then I recommend them films of Yilmaz Guney. I thoroughly loved Umut (1970) a neorealist gem, Suru(1979), Golden Palm Winner Yol(1982) and Duvar(1983). Besides there are very good Turkish films these days by Nuri Bilge Ceylan and the German Turkish Director Fatih Akin.
I am Turkish. I am sorry Billy, but you are not the smartest person on earth. Why in the world you would commit a crime in a country that you had no idea about? And as a college student? What were you thinking? I need to see this movie now. Looks great! I watched the story last night on Locked Up Abroad. So sad:( I couldn't imagine how horrifying this whole ordeal was not only for Billy but his family. He didn t have to lie, he just described what he saw in turkey. that s all. Then, the book became a film that turkish government didn t like it, because reality hurts. Actually I like this movie a lot, but that doesn't mean that I believe that all people from Turkey are bad or disgusting people. I enjoy this film as a piece of art and entertainment, but I know that Alan Parker took many liberties from the book. And actually while I love cinema I must say that is ridiculous to take a movie so seriously. I love Midnight Express, but I know that Turkey is a great country as well as a great culture.

This movie was highly distorted and doesn't depict Turkey in a true way, this film was made to please the average Americans who perceive foreign cultures with sadism. If anyone wants to see Turkey in the 1970s then I recommend them films of Yilmaz Guney. I thoroughly loved Umut (1970) a neorealist gem, Suru(1979), Golden Palm Winner Yol(1982) and Duvar(1983). Besides there are very good Turkish films these days by Nuri Bilge Ceylan and the German Turkish Director Fatih Akin.

Billy Hayes escaped from the turkish prison, and after his shock he wrote his confession. Nobody knew Billy Hayes at that time. Nobody. He didn t have to lie, he just described what he saw in turkey. that s all. Then, the book became a film that turkish government didn t like it, because reality hurts. So, they had to pay Billy Hayes to give a couple of interviews to deny the barbaric reality in turkey...

There is no such thing as a "nice" prison..........wherever you go in the world...(with the possible exception of Switzerland!)...and that includes the states. A friend of mine spent six months in a prison in LA, and on his first night the inmates told him he was going to be the "Queen of arse-fuck city!" You dont go to prison for a good time.

@bhyesilnil5 Its showing a time period, and while everything is not spot on I ask you to show me a film that is correct in all of its portraits. There isn't one, even documentaries play on aspects slightly removed from the reality.
Calm the fuck down. The Turkish prison system is corrupt, just as much as every other country. (which is completely)
