Main reasons was Lithuanian fear of threat from Teutonic Order, and no male descendant of Piast dynasty in Poland (and due to the law, women couldn't rule the country). So Władysław II Jagiełło from jagiellon dynasty married Jadwiga (polish princess), which actually made those 2 counties one: Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Only armies and national treasuries remained separated.
