  • Heziziao ty for uploading this version its nice.

And also you missed the correct interpretation of the song which is about a boy/man leaving to the americas to escape the potato famine and his mother/father who was too sick or old to go with him.

The pipes the song refers to are the horns of the ships that carried thousands of Irish over the pond to the new world.

  • if Bilbo Baggins was irish

  • I envy the Irish so much. It's too sad that i wish to live there yet I'm stuck in this shithole called the U.S.A. where everything is fast food and lawsuits. I want to be in Ireland.

  • Just sayin', the lyrics to Danny Boy were written by an Englishman.

  • This air IS called the Derry Air! Not the londonderry air!!!! And never was!

  • well the great and wonerful old city is still called derry :0 london is in england ? :) derry is in ireland ? :) please correct me if im wrong :( ...... even most prods i know cba saying the way 2 long london(derry ) they just spit out derry :) soo there we go my fellow irish :) thats just the way it is :) its just plain and simple old derry :0 and tytyty ellie for reply :) i think u could be my personnel teacher lololl :)

  • I could listen to this all night <3

Emotional( sometimes i think it sounds like titanic)

  • is it not derry air ? well thatswhat my family call the great old city :)

  • @TheGlenmanusskinhead It is called both derry and Londonderry. I would explain but it could get political and I dont want fellow northerners on my back about it. If you want I can message you just reply ad I will do so

  • the sound of my wonderful heritage :) how i long to visit ireland :) i will come soon :)

  • God bless the Real IRA.

Wipe these orange bastards off the face of the earth.

  • @Jimmac789 ur just some wee twat with a chip on your shoulder, you wouldnt have the balls to do fuck all, so keep yer wee mouth shut and stop wanking in yer ma's basement

  • @Jimmac789

Oh you really are a class act. I'm Irish, Northern Irish , protestant and British. I can trace my family back to the early 17th century. This is our land, our heritage and tradition as much as yours. I think you will also find whilst its perfectly acceptable and in no way offensive to me personally that you call it Derry, the correct official name is Londonderry. Unlike you and many other nationalist/republicans i am perfectly at ease in my country .

  • @TheCoastguard01 No it's not. The Irish Government officially recognizes it as Derry. Look at the road signs next time you're in Donegal as well. What the British call it is insignificant and irrelevant.

  • @Jimmac789

MMmm well the Republic of Ireland doesnt really have much of a say as to what i call a city in my country. This is where the nationalist/republicans get themselves in a pickle. I'm as Irish as the next man and dont give me the old planter nonsense it doesnt wash. Lets see, Dev, ah now theres a great Irishman, born on the other side of the Atlantic . Erskine Childers ( father and son, both born in England). You can call it what you want this tune is Londonderry Aire.

  • @TheCoastguard01 You have still not mastered the intellectually demanding mental dexterity to carefully distinguish the difference (and the importance of that difference) between the name Derry and whatever you call it. What don't you understand about taking a purely moral stand - no poitics - no equivocations - no sticking a finger in the wind! Pure and simple; America and Canada also recognize it as Derry.

  • @Jimmac789 Ah but i do understand the the difference. Its you that cant find an accomodation for us both to live in the same island but have differing opinions and views. You must really hate me. I on the other hand dont hate you, in fact and this is what you really cant stand , i am perfectly at ease with those of different views and opinions. Theres room here for all of us.

  • álainn

  • A tune such as this is the product of a musical tradition, the Irish/Gaelic musical tradition in this case, and not any political entity like Northern Ireland.

To describe this tune as "Northern Irish" is absurd. As absurd as calling, say, "The Minstrel Boy" "Southern Irish".

  • @MacRiocaird Northern Ireland is a democratically recognised country not a political entity, even republicans would not slander the place they call home with such a title

  • @gordy4481 But they call it Derry. Derry is the officially recognized name here in Ireland. Afterall, it's our country.

  • the whiste sounds beautiful... haunting! the harp is jarring... sounds nasty, spoiled this track!

  • the whistle sounds beautiful... haunting! the harp sounds jarring... nasty, spoiled this track.

  • It's Derry, not 'Londonderry'

  • @luluspencer49 DERRY

  • @gordy4481 aka Derry.

  • The so called 'Derry Air '. An Doire is Irish for Oak Grove. The name you bestow here is a relic from the plantations. Incidentally the tune is taken from 'Aislean an Oigfear' The youngman's dream. Doire...Derry The oak grove for those who didn't know.

  • Brings a tear to my eye everytime, this tune makes me appreciate the great man my father is, and sad that one day he will no longer be with us. Here's to enjoying the time we have here on earth with our loved ones.

    -Danny Gavin

  • very important there in no london in there , what so ever. it is , derry air ,

  • Does anyone know what kind/brand of tin whistle this was playing? because i can't get mine to sound this good, and idk if it's my inexperience, or that i have a cheaper model that just doesn't sound as good. It's one of those "Feadog" ones, made in Ireland, i paid like 6 pounds for it in Scotland.

  • T'was always my dream to visit and I DID..it was one of the great travels of my life...alone :)

  • So lovely....

  • The Irish have such a gift for beautiful melodies.

  • I love the instrumental version that appears on Memphis Belle.

  • come on ireland da best country in da world we,ll get dem 6 countys back soon!!

  • ok now i am truely homesick. my home is flat beautiful.

  • WOW. Who could not love this song? It's absolutely beautiful!

  • Wow it really sounds like Raise Me Up.

  • @Darrenmaple10 The melody is based on a traditional Irish tune (especially the opening phrase of its chorus), the Londonderry Air, which is best known as the usual tune to the 1910 song Danny Boy. (wiki)

  • its beautiful

  • Absolutely beautiful music and playing! I love the tin pipe. Enchanting...as is Ireland!

  • i was married to an irish woman once and she was consistantly drunk, disagreable and argumentative.....and so were rest of her family

  • @jethro035181 aha...

    i apologize for saying that

  • @jethro035181 téigh go dtí ifreann!

  • Beautiful derry song

  • Very Very Beautiful !!

    Ireland is FANTASTIC !!!

  • To me this song should be the official anthem of Northern Ireland.

  • @slevisham Technically it is.

  • @slevisham

Aye, it's a shame noone would agree on the lyrics for it though;)

  • @slevisham

Northern Ireland doesn't exist. It's either Irish or nothing.

  • @Primordialfan1 Aw don't be that guy

  • @Primordialfan1 It's a constituent Country of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

  • I sing this song in Indonesian Version in my Church and this is my favorite song..!! LIKE IT!

  • I love this tune so much, especially with the tin pipe, it just brings tears to my eyes... I must admit, I do not know so very much about the Irish history and conflict, since I'm from Germany (we had some kind of other conflicts as well ;-) ), but Irish Folk is probably one of the most beautiful music in my opinion.

  • god this song makes me proud of Ireland.

    Erin Go Bragh!

  • Sung by Ulstermen and Fenian's alike, kind of make's you think there is a common ground, a place that both side's can be reconciled

  • first known as O`Cahan`s Lament

  • This is also the tune of Christian Hymn, but I can't remember the name.

  • I Cannot Tell is the name of the hymn.... Here is the first stanza:

I cannot tell why He Whom angels worship,

Should set His love upon the sons of men,

Or why, as Shepherd, He should seek the wanderers,

To bring them back, they know not how or when.

But this I know, that He was born of Mary

When Bethlehem’s manger was His only home,

And that He lived at Nazareth and laboured,

And so the Saviour, Saviour of the world is come.

  • @cathkinghost nah sorry it's just Derry.

  • @cathkinghost im not a bigot im just a proud patriot ad im not a little boy ill have yu know... check the profile you creep

  • this is good.. but one problem.. there's no such place as LONDONderry!

  • Beautiful song...one of my favorite classical songs.

I just made my own Londonderry Air video, with music by

the London Promenade Orchestra. Check it out!

  • @cathkinghost did i say the song was called that dipshit???? no i said derry was legally changed 2 Derry City so u catch urself on u wankpot

  • hezixiao: Your comments for your post should read: "Beautiful Nothern Irish anthem "Londonderry Aire", also known as "Danny Boy"." The anthem was in place way before the lyrics for Danny Boy was written; and the lyrics was originally set to another tune but subsequently changed by its author Frederick Weatherly to fit the Londonderry anthem. I agree the Danny Boy lyrics is the most well known of all the lyrics set to this Northern Irish anthem.

  • @YT102008 Thank you so much for correcting me! Sorry for the mistake and I have changed it. I didn't know that since I'm not Irish and I wrote the description based on what I knew. Now I know it better and I thank you for it, because I love this piece so much!

  • @hezixiao I was merely looking this song up because I just read it was supposedly a fairy tune originally...If you check out my videos on Vimeo (my account is under the name NOAH SHERRILL) I'm about to upload a mind-blowing video about some synchromystic coincidences I've had involving fairies. And check out the others while you're there! ;-)

  • puts a smile on my face listening to it

  • nil fhiosagam ca hait a bhfuil an 'london derry ' seo?... i know were derry is!... but as far as i know... there is no london derry in ireland !! TAL :)

  • please change the name of this video. it was changed legally to Derry city a couple of years ago

  • @ItsMystix it is till Londonderry you numpty! And anyway, the name of this song is Londonderry Air, and that can never change. Its the National Anthem of Norn Iron, before Parliment was disbanded here in 1972.

  • @bigmac9aac it actually isnt called that ok it was legally changed back to Derry city cause it was actually named after Lord Ward's ancestors Lord Derry same with Lord Bangor so learn your politics and history and dont try to tell me those two Lords dont exixst cause i personally work with the national trust in Castle Ward.

  • @bigmac9aac: I don't know about "ItsMystix" being a numpty (long time since I've seen this word) but otherwise I totally agree with you. By Norn Iron I assume you mean Nothern Ireland where county Londonderry or Derry (depending on ones political position) is located. Yes the song will "always be Londonderry Aire" first.

  • use something called Zamzar to get you tube music mate x

  • oh no i'm all shocked! i want to buy a tin whistle and really learn to play it BUT first i need to deside if i want the whistle on d, b, f and so long, what should i decide?? (and this is one of my favourite songs btw :3 )

  • Get a Feadog in 'D'... that'll get you started.

I'm sitting with one right now that I've had for ten years, and it's still one of my favorites.

Plays well, sounds good, cheap... what more could you ask?

  • where can I buy this song I love this version better then any othe version

  • How can I download this song I would love it as a backing track.

  • Derry City , North of Ireland

  • where IS London Derry????

  • @pmck101 Londonderry is one of the six counties of Northern Ireland, it boarders Antrim and Tyrone which are also part of NI and Donegal which is part of the republic of Ireland

  • @pmck101 i dunno! somewhere down the yellow brick road for all we know! all i know is that it used to be here but... they changed it a few years ago! so the place you wrote is probably right next to the emerald city!

  • Is the tin whistle in the key of D?

  • amazing¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • wonderful playing. Two great instruments of course!
