And also you missed the correct interpretation of the song which is about a boy/man leaving to the americas to escape the potato famine and his mother/father who was too sick or old to go with him.
The pipes the song refers to are the horns of the ships that carried thousands of Irish over the pond to the new world.
I envy the Irish so much. It's too sad that i wish to live there yet I'm stuck in this shithole called the U.S.A. where everything is fast food and lawsuits. I want to be in Ireland.
well the great and wonerful old city is still called derry :0 london is in england ? :) derry is in ireland ? :) please correct me if im wrong :( ...... even most prods i know cba saying the way 2 long london(derry ) they just spit out derry :) soo there we go my fellow irish :) thats just the way it is :) its just plain and simple old derry :0 and tytyty ellie for reply :) i think u could be my personnel teacher lololl :)
@TheGlenmanusskinhead It is called both derry and Londonderry. I would explain but it could get political and I dont want fellow northerners on my back about it. If you want I can message you just reply ad I will do so
@Jimmac789 ur just some wee twat with a chip on your shoulder, you wouldnt have the balls to do fuck all, so keep yer wee mouth shut and stop wanking in yer ma's basement
Oh you really are a class act. I'm Irish, Northern Irish , protestant and British. I can trace my family back to the early 17th century. This is our land, our heritage and tradition as much as yours. I think you will also find whilst its perfectly acceptable and in no way offensive to me personally that you call it Derry, the correct official name is Londonderry. Unlike you and many other nationalist/republicans i am perfectly at ease in my country .
@TheCoastguard01 No it's not. The Irish Government officially recognizes it as Derry. Look at the road signs next time you're in Donegal as well. What the British call it is insignificant and irrelevant.
MMmm well the Republic of Ireland doesnt really have much of a say as to what i call a city in my country. This is where the nationalist/republicans get themselves in a pickle. I'm as Irish as the next man and dont give me the old planter nonsense it doesnt wash. Lets see, Dev, ah now theres a great Irishman, born on the other side of the Atlantic . Erskine Childers ( father and son, both born in England). You can call it what you want this tune is Londonderry Aire.
@TheCoastguard01 You have still not mastered the intellectually demanding mental dexterity to carefully distinguish the difference (and the importance of that difference) between the name Derry and whatever you call it. What don't you understand about taking a purely moral stand - no poitics - no equivocations - no sticking a finger in the wind! Pure and simple; America and Canada also recognize it as Derry.
@Jimmac789 Ah but i do understand the the difference. Its you that cant find an accomodation for us both to live in the same island but have differing opinions and views. You must really hate me. I on the other hand dont hate you, in fact and this is what you really cant stand , i am perfectly at ease with those of different views and opinions. Theres room here for all of us.
A tune such as this is the product of a musical tradition, the Irish/Gaelic musical tradition in this case, and not any political entity like Northern Ireland.
To describe this tune as "Northern Irish" is absurd. As absurd as calling, say, "The Minstrel Boy" "Southern Irish".
@MacRiocaird Northern Ireland is a democratically recognised country not a political entity, even republicans would not slander the place they call home with such a title
The so called 'Derry Air '. An Doire is Irish for Oak Grove. The name you bestow here is a relic from the plantations. Incidentally the tune is taken from 'Aislean an Oigfear' The youngman's dream. Doire...Derry The oak grove for those who didn't know.
Brings a tear to my eye everytime, this tune makes me appreciate the great man my father is, and sad that one day he will no longer be with us. Here's to enjoying the time we have here on earth with our loved ones.
Does anyone know what kind/brand of tin whistle this was playing? because i can't get mine to sound this good, and idk if it's my inexperience, or that i have a cheaper model that just doesn't sound as good. It's one of those "Feadog" ones, made in Ireland, i paid like 6 pounds for it in Scotland.
@Darrenmaple10 The melody is based on a traditional Irish tune (especially the opening phrase of its chorus), the Londonderry Air, which is best known as the usual tune to the 1910 song Danny Boy. (wiki)
I love this tune so much, especially with the tin pipe, it just brings tears to my eyes... I must admit, I do not know so very much about the Irish history and conflict, since I'm from Germany (we had some kind of other conflicts as well ;-) ), but Irish Folk is probably one of the most beautiful music in my opinion.
hezixiao: Your comments for your post should read: "Beautiful Nothern Irish anthem "Londonderry Aire", also known as "Danny Boy"." The anthem was in place way before the lyrics for Danny Boy was written; and the lyrics was originally set to another tune but subsequently changed by its author Frederick Weatherly to fit the Londonderry anthem. I agree the Danny Boy lyrics is the most well known of all the lyrics set to this Northern Irish anthem.
@YT102008 Thank you so much for correcting me! Sorry for the mistake and I have changed it. I didn't know that since I'm not Irish and I wrote the description based on what I knew. Now I know it better and I thank you for it, because I love this piece so much!

I Cannot Tell is the name of the hymn.... Here is the first stanza:
I cannot tell why He Whom angels worship,
Should set His love upon the sons of men,
Or why, as Shepherd, He should seek the wanderers,
To bring them back, they know not how or when.
But this I know, that He was born of Mary
When Bethlehem’s manger was His only home,
And that He lived at Nazareth and laboured,
And so the Saviour, Saviour of the world is come.
