  • I agree with russieross here. In those days the artist under whose name the album or single was released were often not playing the music. In very obvious circumstances, take all the Motown & Phil Spector records. So it says The Ronettes or The Temptations on the label of the single or album; does that mean it had to be The Ronettes and The Temptations playing all those violins & horns & percussion on the track, otherwise it was a "lie"? Or it was "phony"?

  • You've got to understand the nature of recording to really understand why the wrecking crew was used time and time again. It was not done too fool people, remember adding studio musicians adds to the production costs. It was done to get the best album out, in the shortest time that they possibly could. Because in the end you are paying for every minute in that studio.

  • chris montez sounds like he is singing lay whores dance [hey baby wanna take a chance i left my rubbers in the other pants] .

  • @russieross The truth is not just now coming out, it's been available knowledge since the beginning. It's been generally publicly known for at least 20 years. They didn't hide it, they just didn't say much about it. The public has always known that studio musicians generally replaced the artist in the studio. Another area where the Beatles broke new ground. Whoever you like as musicians on stage today are probably replaced in the studio.

  • @breezebro Sorry to disagree, but the truth has not been known from the beginning. I bought some of these records when they were first released (Gary Lewis, Beach Boys "Pet Sounds"), and no one including me, had any idea that the group in question did not play the instruments. The comment that "they didn't hide it, they didn't say much about it" is laughable. Because they didn't say much, they DID hide it even if they didn't actually lie about it.

  • @russieross Just because you didn't know doesn't mean it wasn't known. Most people didn't care. You really have to be naive to believe that Gary Lewis, Dino, Desi, etc.... could play enough to record an album. BB's could play enough to record but Brian couldn't wait till they got back from the road. They could play but not enough to please Brian's perfectionism. It was faster to use the Wrecking Crew than to argue and fight with family. Do you know about miming & electric guitars not plugged in?

  • @breezebro Most people didn't care? How do you know that? . Anyway, that is not the point. The records are frauds, period. If a record says "Gary Lewis and The Playboys", it better be them. If it says "Beach Boys" it better be the Beach Boys. Anything else a lie. It is not naive to believe the advertised artists were playing. I, nor anyone else, knows the capabilities of Dino, Desi, Billy and the like. phony is phony and no one can argue around that.

  • @russieross I don't think they have to report to you. The musicians of the world will do what they will do whether you like it or not. When artists lip sync nobody cares, when the BB's play on TV with electric guitars that obviously aren't plugged in nobody cares. Normal people understand that it is the way the business works and adjust to it with no problem. It's not all going to change cause you don't like it.

  • @breezebro I'm not asking anyone to report to me, just be honest. People accept lip-syncs because the lip sync is obvious. Same with unplugged guitars. However fraudelent packaging is quite another. Now listen, this is getting tiring. You come up with every ridiculous reason to defend the "Crew", but none make any sense. Your arguments do not hold water. Tell you what; you think what you like and I will do the same. What these groups did in sixties is fine with you?...good...have a nice day.

  • @russieross OK, fine with me, no argument. I was just looking through my old albums and found that I don't have any of the BB's original albums. Most albums list who plays what in the credits. Just out of curiosity if you have any take a look and see if there is credit given. If it says the BB's played the guitars that would be a lie and then I would have to agree with you. Again, at least with the BB's I think it was a matter of practicality rather than an attempt to outright deceive people.

  • @breezebro The "practicality" argument is nonsense. I do have those albums and no, they don't list the Beach Boys as the musicans anywhere. Same with Gary Lewis. However, no one bothered to do that because the fans believed the band played the instruments!. Everyone thought that the group played the instruments because they was no notice of anything otherwise. A lie of omission is just as wrong as one you tell yourself. These people knew they were fooling the public and didnt care.

  • @breezebro There was and still are rumors that The Beatles did not play on all their music tracks. Case in point. No ones knows who played drums on "Nowhere Man". Ringo was in the hospital the day it was recorded.

  • @bennygoods I think George Martin would use anyone who was qualified in a pinch. Probably Paul played the drums on "Nowhere Man", he is known to have done so on several occasions. The question is how much of the others work did Paul re-record after they were gone. There are songs where he was dissatisfied with Ringo's drumming and George's guitar and replaced their work, I would not be surprised to find out that he did that to John but knew better than to make it known.

  • @FIXITDIY Dude, why be a conspiracy theorist when it comes to the greatest rock and roll band of all time The Beatles?! Why taint the joy that listening to The Beatles gives people with things like that? I personally don't want to hear it and I don't want to read it. I don't care because I don't believe it. And it doesn't harm me by NOT believing it. Does it pain you to believe that there was once a great rock band that was relatively DRAMA FREE?!

  • @MattHatter You must have read a reply to me and thought It was my statement.

I agree with you and that's what I was commenting about. It doesn't make any difference who played on the songs, but some guys here are all upset to find out that the BB's didn't play on Pet Sounds. The only reason I mention it is, as a matter of fact, not of importance to enjoyment.
