  • I just bought a 640-1 and haven't fired it yet. Was good to see what the recoil will be like. Nice vid. Hey, you look like you live up North :)

  • dr bb - i know this video is 2 yrs old but what what caliber were you shooting that day? Def lean into it absorb recoil. And kudos on the one handed firing. Defilly good to practice that. I have a SW 649, and look into getting the front sight dovetailed with and orange putty insert!

  • Yeah, this is really old at this point. I do much differently now. Anyhow thanks, sounds like good advice (seeing as i do that now). I did paint the front sight orange, but I really need a good insert instead like you said. And ya, getting accustomed to one handed shooting from various positions and in each hand seems wise to practice, you never know what youll need to do in a situation

  • nice...id like to see how your targets look like after each shot before i can really talk about your stance. maybe move your back leg out a little more, and line your shoulders up with the target. im no expert marksman, but i did do 2 tours with the military. its a nice gun, im looking into getting the same one for my concealed carry. you can rely on smiths, and revolvers in particular not jamming. i dont know why that guy beneath me is mad; responsible gun owners are a blessing to society.

  • Easy does it there

I have a knowledge of history and human nature, and I know that good people need to be armed. This is not a perfect world, no amount of naive wishing is going to change that. I am not a slave and I refuse to be a victim of malicious people. I fight back

Beyond that, the shooting sports are good wholesome fun. I get to hang out with the guys at the range, and sharpen my skills -- you would be amazed at the similarities in skillful handling of firearms and playing the violin

  • my god! he's just shooting a gun and u freak out.

    ... ur a spaz ...

  • ah...its a cultural difference. youre a german girl...i understand that the appreciation for guns in germany and in america is an extreme juxtaposition. if you dont like guns, or are scared of them, i understand and nobody hates you for it, but its very mean to judge someone, and say that what they do is crap and that they are sick. you dont look like a mean person when you are singing your songs, so why say mean things? responsibility is the key to gun ownership, just like being a good human.

  • It's a great little gun. A great one to have.

  • Your comment made me laugh..It's a great little gun. Lol.

  • I own the S&W 640-3 customized.Great little basterd,My friend makes 158grain steel jacketed tunstun core bullets and I put'em in my reloads, and goddamn! If yer werein' kevlar and I shoot ya say goodby, cuz I've gotten' through 1Quarter inch steal plate!I carry my 640 on me at all times,my favorte self defence gun.

  • Wow! Thats amazing about the steel penetration. Ill have to look into something like that. I reload too, I wonder where I can get something like those bullets.

ANd thats the nice thing about the 640, its easy to carry, got mine on me all the time too.

  • I got me one of them s&w 640-3. I'm no expert, but I'm retired military and have gotten some good tips. First off, don't stand square. Stand like you're in a fight. Right handed-right foot forward slightly. Stay loose in the knees and hips. That's a stable sumbitch there.

  • 640, its a nice one alright.

People at the range have told me similar things for the most part. So what you say makes alot of sense to me, i actually have to do it that way when firing my Desert Eagle 50, or my 44 Revolvers loaded hot -- too much kick for a square stance.

    Sounds good, thanks!

  • I am thinking of making the 640 my next purchase. However, how does one access the hammer area for cleaning/lubrication? Some ammo is dirty (WWB) and I like to keep my firearms meticulous. I would greatly appreciate any advice regarding cleaning and also the 640 purchase concerns. Thank you. sincerely, JAMES.

  • Meticulous about clean guns? Sounds like several people I know.

Of course the barrel, cylinder, and crane are easily cleaned. For hammer, there is a panel on the right side held by 3 slotted screws. I've taken it off on my 686 and 629, but not on the 640 yet. I was going to once, but the panel was still very tight and I didnt want break it. Not alot of info on it either. So I would say difficult to thoroughly clean inside.

Other than that I love the thing, easy to conceal, so its on me 24/7.

  • nice pistol, I am looking at one myself.

As far as your shooting posture. On the first couple of shots your feet were more square and sometimes that can throw you off balance. On the third shot you finally spread you stance a little. One last thing, bend at the waist and lean forward just a bit.

    safe shooting.

  • Some cop told my range buddy to keep his feet really square, but I can never be comfortable with that. Currently I do have one foot more in front of the other and I am leaning forward more now. Seems better to me.

    Thank you.

  • No prob, that's the way they taught us in the military too, I don't like the square stance either. With my semi-auto it's not so bad, but with the kick from my revolver I make sure my stance is stable.

    love the s&w centenials.

  • That's a beautiful gun. How are you liking it?

I've been trying to make my mind up between the 640 and 340. There's an obvious weight difference between the stainless and scandium, but do you know if they're the same size?

By the way, how do you like the 357 recoil vs the 38? :)

  • I love it for the most part. It has a great profile for easy concealment. I got a load for it that powerful and pinpoint accurate. The weight could be a problem. One of my range buddies has the scandium version and its featherlight, but its horrible to shoot. I shot it once with a 357 magnum round loaded in it and I never want to touch it again. Thats bad if you want to practice regularly with what you carry.

357 mag recoil is a bit harsh, but nothing like in the scandium one, its manageable.

  • No kidding. I put 50 rounds of 357 through the 340PD last week and needless to say my hand was aching the next day. By no means fun to shoot, but the combination of weight and power is unbeatable if you need to carry it always and use it once.

  • oh, and i think the scandium one is a tiny bit shorter if i remember.
