  • great video!

  • mlb the show 11 brought me here

  • Could someone explain what the back story to tis video was?

  • @chocobunny576 The back story to this video was based upon the daily lives of many members of People's Temple Agricultural project (aka Jonestown), in the days leading up to the Jonestown Massacre, where, sadly, 909 devoted men, women, and children were eventually convinced by leader Jim Jones to partake in mass"revolutionary suicide", the result of a dangerous combination of trust, oblivion, and Kool-Aid, poisoned w/ cyanide.

    Look up, "jonestown" on google.

  • I love this song... man i wish i was going to laneway :(

  • the only reason the director even knew about the People's Temple is because of their tragedy. exploitation. song is OK.

  • @onemorebrando pretty sure that's the only reason anyone knows about it.

  • wow, this is haunting. I really don't know what to think about this video o.O

  • Crazy murderers and fanatics. Great. Human, they are. Heroes or anything positive they are not. The world doesnt need people like this. Looks nice, though.

California Congressman Leo Ryan arrived in Guyana to survey Jonestown and interview its inhabitants. After his life was threatened by a member on the first day, Ryan decided to return to the U.S. with some residents who wished to leave. As they boarded their plane, a group of Jones's guards opened fire on them, killing Ryan and 4 others

  • Beautiful. Haunts me to the core.

  • 1:14 Lmao.

  • in love with this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I like it...

  • Such a great song!!!!!!! I was thrilled when I learned how to play it! I saw you guys in the park you were so awesome!

  • at least its not auto tuned

  • awesome song ; ^ ]

  • fuck off you dickheads with your dickhead music fucking lifeless sheep the lot of ya

  • @pachacuti69 Ummmmmm... i'm sorry. what the hell did you just say? you should go back to kindergarden. It might help people take you seriously.

  • @pachacuti69 lol yeah this makes no sense

  • FOOL

  • i got taught about jim jones when i was around 12 years old at school.. that shit still scares me lol

  • is that the young mario balotelli at 3:32!?

  • is that the young mario balotelli at 3:32

  • Cults rock!! Have you guys heard Cults new cover of Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows"?!?!?! ...It's an amazing cover, you should check it out.

  • this is new on a radio station which brought me here...but I already listened to this a long time ago xD

  • Lifestyle brahs

  • Leonard Cohen is an absolute musical legend, if there ever was one. All modern songwriter owe something to his work. He’s just release a new record called “Old Ideas”. In a really cool side project called, “Old Ideas with New Friends”, some of the great bands of now have been covering Leonard Cohen Songs. Everyone from Cold War Kids and the Cults to Nicole Atkins and the Mountain Goats have participated thus far, with more to come. It’s pretty cool—go check it all out.

  • Why are the comments so long, i just like song!

  • On another note, why can't people come together like this without cults or religion involved? If you wanted to join a commune where people sang and danced every night and had great big bonfires and enjoyed the evening and where everybody was working towards a common goal, it would pretty much have to be centered around a religion. I grew up on a Christian commune, and while it was a nightmare, some elements of it were just amazing. It was always one of the extremes.

  • A lot of my friends are into top 40 pop music like Bigtime Rushor pop country. I believe that the music I like is of a higher quality and more emotionally honest and impacting. How can you really put into words the differences between various types of music without sounding like a douche? What separates people who love Bigtime Rush vs Cults? Well for one, people who like Cults are more likely to know beforehand what happened in Jonestown. We do more searching and probably pay more attention.

  • im guyanese 0_0 that was creepy seeing guyana on the news thingy

  • What 's the point refering to that disaster ? This is a nice joyful song...????

  • for some reason the cults music sounds like lykke li music. i like them both!

  • I saw them at Webster Hall a few weeks ago and I really likes the show even though I didn't listen to their music beforehand. The only bad parts were that her mic wasn't loud enough and the opening acts were AWFUL.

  • Nicely done, great song.

  • BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • @BenjaminCGraham You can't just be a douche bag and expect your biased opinion to matter.

  • @BenjaminCGraham Why did anyone thumb-up your retarded comment? It's art, jackass. Also read the director's comment. People these days are too damn sensitive. Grow a set.

  • amazing beautiful song

  • @BenjaminCGraham yeah dude hipsters lOL you're so funny man hipsTERS wahtss upo with theme lol i mean like wow hipster wow

  • WTF 3:28

  • Saw Cults the other day at Laneway festival. Enjoyed all four chords of it.

  • So apparently they are mainstream after reading some comments. Actually idc. And who effing cares. Music is music. I just want the best for any artists/bands I like and I just want them to be rich and famous XD THAT'S WHAT THEY REALLY WANT WHO DOESNT WANT THAT. Anyhoo I do like this video ^^

  • This song is on my local radio :o Cults is not mainstream lei ._. I was shocked actually hehe.

  • It's called art. Get over it.

  • @henryhorker I don't think you understand what "art" is. "Art" is inherently political. It does not exist in some isolated sphere. An artist ought to have the right to treat whatever subject matter he or she chooses, in whatever manner he or she chooses. But that doesn't mean that the artist should be free of ethical obligations.

  • minutes later...

  • i love the song. crazy how they thought of using the jonestown as the music video, but i'm even more impressed that they didn't put in the massacre part of it, only the everyday life of the people. it's as if this whole music video is a memoir to all the victims, don't you think?

  • @kalbindo I wouldn't call it a memoir, I would call it a way to show that though these people may have been brainwashed, they were still humans and that they were not the crazies that everyone thinks they were. Like I said, they had some very twisted ideas, but they were humans nonetheless

  • Don't drink the koolaid :(

  • Love the music, but what happened was so fucked up.

I was raised on a religious commune and I just hate it all. People are so stupid. I was told that science was a lie and that scientists were evil and purposefully hid evidence that showed the existence of God and made up fossils and shit. These people were hardline.

Thank god (oh the irony) I was smart enough to see through the bullshit. What upsets me most is seeing little kids in the video.

  • I am happy they made this video - after it, i have read up on what happened. It raises awareness, and it also celebrates the life of those who sadly died.

  • where's the kool-aid part

  • @BenjaminCGraham Research in which Cults? how about the biggest cult on the planet? The American Cult.

  • @BenjaminCGraham ... hipster song??? I'm glad to see that you're exercising your ability to poorly identify art. Hipster? REALLY? I don't know who the hell you are but do you're homework before you label.

  • it would be really cool if precocious bourgeois white people were murdered

  • @BenjaminCGraham

Ah yes, of course, if we just give them some magic, healing money then it's ok to use the footage and sing a song. Moron.

  • I think the video is pretty clever. I was quite surprised at how well it fits together, if you look at it from an artistic viewpoint.

  • It was bad taste putting themselves singing along and smiling in the video, but otherwise it spreads awareness and recognition of the horror of the event.

  • @Yopokoko Don't watch it

  • you guys act so offended by this video when in reality you probably didnt even know what it was until you googled it.

  • Haha what the heck? 240p, 360p, 480p, and then 1080p?

  • @themichaelnuckles NO 720p FOR YOU!

  • @JennaughS haha I know right?

  • If it wasn't for this video, I don't think I would have known about this incident. I think it's important to remember history, so we don't make the same mistakes over again.

  • From the Director:

"For this music video we didn't want to put a spin on the footage or the peoples lives—instead we wanted to re-tell and humanize their story. Lastly, I am moved to say when we completed the video we were able to preview it for some of the survivors of the Jonestown Massacre, who expressed their appreciation of our focus on the lives of the People's Temple members as opposed to exploiting the graphic images of the final tragedy. "

I think you people should really calm down.

  • @educatedfools32

I heard the song first, then saw the video. It made me research out the tragedy and for what it is worth I see where you humanized the story, like you said. Not sure I would have put the 2 together, story and song, but a well done video and it is neat that the survivors had positives from it.

  • @educatedfools32 Video is Genius-I haven't heard a song this good in a long time.

  • @educatedfools32=no,you make an artistic decision of commercial product/video=U agree to live w/resultant feedback on the sucess/failure of ur attempt. Good intentions dont=successful creation. So if people r disturbed, say thank you very much for the feedback. If people hate the video that negatively affects how they feel about the band& the ULTIMATE purpose of a music video=to connect the public w/good feeling w/the client's music. U ruined good song=they didnt pay for a PSA or vanity project.

  • @educatedfools32

You people? Oh HELL NO! We need to have a house meeting Ya'll!

  • I would have used the Kiev parade footage from 26 April 1986. Would have matched better with the "go outside" title. Well done anyway.

  • This sure is a fun little video to go with this cute song! I just wanted to suggest for your next video you use footage from 9/11 or maybe from inside a concentration camp that would fit nicely with your happy sounding xylophones!

  • To the people hating, yes the kool-aid mass suicide was terrible, but this is artistic expression, and this "simple hipster song" is actually better than more than half the crap played on the radio today. At least the people in Cults know what these tragically terrible things are, unlike all the people who are too ignorant and lazy to learn about this.

  • @LaNanurXxX

The People's Temple a cult that committed massive ritual suicide by drinking poison Flavor-Aid* in the late 70's.

    *cheap kool-aid knock-off

  • @BenjaminCGraham Damn, I couldn't agree more, the song is catchy but the footage is too much, I just feel bad for those poor little kids that were killed.....I don't mind them making a song about it but using the footage for a music video is weak!! It's in poor taste IMO.

  • I have mixed feelings about this but I can bet that if you're outraged, you're giving Cults exactly the reaction they were hoping for.

  • @BenjaminCGraham you might have witten the stupidest thing ever on youtube, congratulations. This makes absolutely no sense at all. What the hell do you mean by "cult research"? There is no scholastic field of that name. I am reserving hope that this was Sarcastic and I simply missed what you were responding to, but if it was made earnestly, then I am sorry but you are incredibly misguided.

  • the video is about the Jonestown Tragedy with Jim Jones, google it.

  • All those people died... and these sick fucks make a video out of it.

  • @RaWr13GiRlxxx all of those brainwashed people died*

  • @realoverfake Jim Jones changed once they got to Guiana. He preyed on the poor and promised them their own land to live in and that is why they followed him. Everything was great when they were in San Francisco so they trusted him. Once they realized what was going on they wanted to leave but were threatened with death if they left. They were all afraid to speak out. Jones had armed men watching these people at all times. They were trying to leave that’s why he killed them.

  • I didn't understand anything that was going on in that video

  • such a sad video i like the song but the video is a little tasteless in my opinion

  • Haunting...

  • i am only 12 years old - what is this?

  • that video was FUBAR.

  • @BenjaminCGraham whats this video about??

  • always love this song but the music vid is the shit

  • 60s pop with 70s cult footage. Is anything original anymore? Anything?

  • Thanks MLB 11

  • love this song heard it on WERS Emerson college radio its catchy this video though sheesh! *shudders*

  • me like song, me like song a lot, me like song a lot a lot, me like song a lot a lot more than you.

  • Why does Kelly Macdonald want me to go outside? It's cold and scary and I'm pretty sure there are wolves out there. Oh well, I like boardwalk empire and she's never steered me wrong before.

  • The girls fit aswell, bonus points

  • If anyone want to hear a great song with cults as featured, check out G Eazy-Netflix, it is really good

  • What is this song about?

  • @BenjaminCGraham well shit they arent going to show people getting shot at in their video.

  • i love the fact no one i know knows about this kind of music like i do.

  • So creepy. Look up the story if you don't know it. Seems to me the writers of Lost got a lot of inspiration from this real history.

  • good one there

  • JJ was misunderstood!

  • poor kids :(

  • can some inform me to what the name of the cult pr the event is called

  • @mutantpinyata4real James "Jim" Jones. He was a Reverand. It was called the People's Temple Agricultural Project. They were forming an integrated peaceful farming community in Guyana

  • @bravadura Although i'm pretty sure Jim Jones was an egotistical sociopathic leader of a cult who ended up killing all his followers in a mass "suicide" by putting cyanide in their drinking supply. Look it up.

  • so the guy in the video sings Ballin?

  • I'm drinking The Kool-Aid: love, Love, LOVE this band! - "Cults" are great, Great, GREAT!!!

  • She will swallow him and ascend, she would deny it now but it's her nature

  • @BlueFireMai i have not heard this song on the radio how can they be sellouts and i only heard this song through youtube a couple of days ago.

  • i remember when i saw the documentary on this event, religion mixed with the general uncertainty and insecurity inside of human beings is just so deadly

  • this really sucks

  • i cannot get this song out of my head.

  • Stop arguing on youtube everyone. It's pointless.

  • This video took me way too long to figure out. I had no idea what I was watching until the end. Bit of a shock.

  • i honestly dont understand why they would use jonestown 1978 as this video so many lives were lost??

  • I wish the world would fucking end already.

  • THEOTIS BEASLEY (:

  • Where is 720p?

  • BUT THE DOOR IS LOCKED!

  • this is what foster the people was like before they got popular and turned into fags... RIP! i hope cults dont go that way....

  • AAAAAIIYAAA~!! love this song~

  • Fantastic video, but so sad that this event took place. I was one years of age when it happened and my parents lived close to where it all began.

  • Comment removed

  • G-Eazy's is better.

  • The reality is that Jim Jones was set up by the US government just like David Koresh.

  • @Doctorlg Lay off the pot dude. Have you even listened to the audio tapes of Jones' preaching? There is literally days worth of audio available of Jones in his own words.

  • @pnggolfer9 Please the American CIA were and still is the real killers... Do some real research... The CIA is known poisoning groups of people.

  • @Doctorlg Do some real research? You mean like finding audio tapes like the day before the mass suicide took place, where Jones actually tries to defend the mass suicide as being a revolutionary suicide. You can hear people actually praising him for it. Real research....not your crack pot theories tying the CIA to every fringe group. I'm not denying they havn't some abominable things, just not here.

  • @pnggolfer9 That a religious sermon on on death and dieing (like what most preachers do). He did not talk about giving people cyanide. You must be smoking crack if you think 900 people just drink some kool-aid because a preacher man told them to. People don't believe in Jesus enough to drink poison in mass. Name another fringe group that has done similar? But I can give many examples of how the CIA and the American government poisons masses of people.

  • @Doctorlg are the real killers verb agreement :) and dont be a stupid the government has done bad things but they aren't out to get all of us if it gives you comfort to think we live in a super spy thriller more power to you but life isn't that exciting sorry and what were they to gain by setting him up oops nothing :P

  • @ben122692 Give me an example of a bad thing the government hasn't done? Your American government has killed more poor people last year alone than a thousand Jim Jone's so don't you be stupid. 99% of religion is brainwashing people to accept some kind of poison. I use to believe until I realized that the only people that die for your sins are framed.

  • @Doctorlg things my government has not done any natural disaster um the holocaust started both world wars 911 and dont tell me they did you dim wit the massacre at Tiananmen Square your issues with verb agreement general issues with you're intelligent um Hitler taking power and how about anything before 1776 we didnt do any of that seriously you make me sad that you think the US government is out to get anyone they are no more evil than any goverment sorry

  • @ben122692 The "Holocaust", "Tianiamen Square"? You should feel sad at the fact that you had to bring up another government's massacres to justify your country's own?

Man, oh man, you're so American!! LOL

  • @Doctorlg i cant even describe the disturbing things i want to do to you and your family

  • @BANNASON Your name describes it all... Don't try to do my family like how your father did you Bannaboy... lol

  • @Doctorlg just stop most everyone is disagreeing and if your trolling your good at it lol but otherwise its just sad either youre a young kid that doesnt know jack about the world or your a grown man that is ignorant either way stop you dont sound smart you arent making a good argument you are just sounding ridiculous America didnt cause your issues most likely we might mess up but every government does too so shut up and yes we do need goverment to keep nut jobs like you in line

  • @Doctorlg you spoute some shite, everyone is poisoned by some outside influence when ur brought up. you make ur own choices in life. stop hating on america for something u cant control.....

  • @Doctorlg That is bullshit. The reality is that Jones was a sick pimp. He used the idea of god as a mechanism to manipulate people. Many of whom were great and wonderful and made the tragic mistake of believing that another man has an answer to their life; a devine line to god. Complete bullshit.

  • @Modom2011 A pimp... LOL With all the thousands of pimps in America what kind of pimp kills his whores? The C.I.A!!

  • @Doctorlg If you are a doctor, then it may be safe to say that you are a doctor of deez nuts!

  • @Modom2011 "deez nuts"? What kind of language is that? Ok, I get it. Well if you think you're a "modom", then you're mo-dumb than I thought.

  • @Doctorlg Ha, ha, ha!

  • DON'T DRINK THE KOOL-AID KIDS

  • would like to thank lily allen 4 giving this band a chance. and boy have they repaid her back. great sound and pretty cool live can't wait 4 new material.

  • 2:02 it's Gadaffi! lol

  • It was funny when a congressman from the US went to Jonestown to talk to JJ and was eventually shot along with his group. Why do US politicians think that they can boss everyone around outside the US?

  • @USAisAntiWhite Because they are US citizens still. The same reason why Clinton went to North Korea to get the US journalist back. If you ask me, this is one of the few things politicians do that actually help people, and it isn't even normally in their job description.

  • My advice? Don't drink the 'kool-aid', folks. Don't drink 'the kool-aid'.

  • I seem them live two times, and there little boring.

  • @WhiteWolfUsa you just made the English language cry a little

  • @WhiteWolfUsa i would not pay to see them but i do like this song.

  • Fuck Jim JONES!!!

  • IS THIS INDIE ROCK?

  • lol thats sorta scary tho..the cult part.. no one realizes that a cult tho lol

  • Heard this on NPR.

  • Thumbs up if SHUT THE FUCK UP!

  • no 720p?????

  • My taste for originality and inspiration brought me here.

  • @itoady LOL!

  • @itoady Fuck off. You dikedddd.

  • @itoady what a douchey hipster music snob thing to say

  • RIP Edwin Newman. A real journalist who respected his profession, the English language, his readers and viewers, and took his responsibility to inform the public seriously.

  • put thumbs up if MLB brought you here

  • R.I.P to the lives that were lost on this day in 1978.

  • what is the song about and video.....hmmmmm....

  • Alex Zander's YO!

  • Jim Jones is the reason that religion is not the answer, where religion is equal to violence.

  • @DrDooM24PBK What a stupid theory

  • @UntitledxBeyond

    Go read your bible.

  • Noam Chomsky at 1:12?
