I can't stop thinking about a RBC I saw and played with today at the pet store. First time I've seen them and was happy to find your video here. SO sweet, these birds. But they were asking $1900usd! But if I didn't already have my cat, I'd seriously consider shelling out the cash for him....=(
@ galapagos68. I also have a friend from Australia who facebooked me recently to tell me that they are everywhere in her neighborhood - and that they are regarded as a pest. it's too bad. We just got our new galah a couple days ago. They are very sweet babies. I bet those videos of them getting trapped are just awful. I mean, I guess I feel that way about pigeons, but please, there is no comparison. Who is this nguyenimproved douche?
@wordgrrl71 just yesterday i saw 3 wild ones chilling on the side of the road eating grass. I live in the 3rd biggest city of australia, it's not really that big a town like 1 million odd people. It's out west or country areas where people farm that Galahs and other cockatoos are regarded as pests because a flock will decimate a field in an afternoon.
Yeah I don't know what this wankers problem is, he's just a dumb school kid from a poor asian country.
@galapagos68 hey its not possible to bring native galahs out of australia right? :( why doesnt your country export some galahs if they're such pests, i want to get one but its between 2000 to 3000 SGD here in singapore....
@JoNJoSmYTHXD I live in Australia so they weren't expensive at all. Bought the first 2 for about $60 AUD each 12 years ago. Got the first one at about 5 months old and she just became human, then a year later got a one year old male.
@galapagos68 the price difference is huge, here in America it's around $1500-$1800 for a Galah. I love My galah so much, she had been abused horribly and has improved so much. It's so weird though, a guy abused her and now that she's been away for several years she loves men. At first if a guy walked by her cage she would throw herself to the bottom and hurt herself trying to get away :( and she could just barely walk, I think one of her feet may have been broken because it has a strange shape.
@copperchan that's so sad, and the fact that someone had the money to throw around to buy one only to treat it bad. have you got any videos of her, of her foot or anything?
@galapagos68 Sorry for the late reply, I made a slideshow, in the third photo it's a close up of her foot that had been broken. She's also a dark morph galah, and I included a bunch of recent photos I've taken. it looks like the lower leg bone slid down over the foot. She's been doing awesome after leg therapy to make her legs and feet strong again. At first when I walked around with her on my hand she would hold onto my shirt with her beak to keep from falling off my hand.
@nguyenimproved Thanks for the comment. My birds are obviously domesticated birds bred in captivity. They would die if I was to set them free. So I'd much rather them having a happy life with me as my companions than for them to die of starvation in the wild
@galapagos68 just treat them well if you must keep them. but it's a fallacy to say they would die if released. thats baloney from the pet market talking. do cats or dogs die when they go free? no because life is not that fragile. if you ever watched the historical documentary from the 1990s 'jurassic park' you would know that "Life Finds a Way", my friend. there's lots of scraps and food for these native birds to find. if pigeons can do it so can galahs. they are the most adaptable parrot.
@nguyenimproved yeah thanks for the advice... Derp. Yes 4 legged domesticated carnivorous animals weighing between 6 and 50 kgs with claws and teeth can and will survive when gone Ferrel - you should write a book bro, call it "On the Origin of Species, Part II" and bring forward you're evidence from Steven Spielberg sci-fi films. And I will continue to spray hydrochloric acid in the eyes of my obvious much loved and treated well domesticated parrots because I simply enjoy doing so.
@nguyenimproved Not to mention all the complaining people do about galahs that sit on their phone wires and frequent their gardens. THey are considered a nuisance in a lot of places. I think these birds look happy. God I hate sanctimonious people. Get a life.
@wordgrrl71 shut up whore. and you really don't see the irony in calling me sanctimonious do you WORDY whore. (grrl...how lame 80s..the era when tank girl type dyke bitches were cool is over honey lol) get a wife rugmuncher
@savannahugs Missing one talon shouldn't be an issue as the bird is a pet and is not fending for its self. Just make sure you give the bird fresh vegies as well as seed to give it some variety and moisture in its diet.
I live in Australia, both the birds cost me less combined than it did to buy a vaccinated/de-sexed cat on death row at the pound.
aww ... i would really appreciate if u give me a brief summary on how to train them please, and btw i have 4 month old galah and it keeps biting and i cant even handle it yet. If i try to hold it inside its cage it goes spastic .......
I wouldn't use the word train, you want to bond with the bird. Whistle at him and wait for him to respond and whistle some more, see if you can have a "conversation" with him. Clip the birds wings, leave the cage door open, try to encourage him to come out with some nice bird treats, like fresh vegies or cooked pasta. When you are watching TV get the bird out and sit him on the arm rest, whistle and chat with him, wiggle your finger and try and scratch his head. Do this often and it will pay off
@freeSOULalways The video is old by about 3 years. That’s my parents’ new house just after they moved. Jethro got a bit anxious in the move, when all that he knew at the old house was uprooted he started to chew his wing and tail feathers. It looks worse than they are because I regularly clip them as so not to lose the funny little guy. I have huge thick leather off cuts in his cage to chew and bits of hard wood. He's looking good these days, has really filled out and is quite the beef cake
Jethros wings look awesome, I don't know much about birds but they look badass. I understand what was being said about them looking damaged, But still....awesome look. haha.
@controlchick Yeah mine purr, I'm unable to work out if the later 2 birds were mimicking the first bird who may be mimicking one of my cats. They do talk, but usually only when you raise one by itself. These birds are only social with people they are familiar with, they attack anyone who tries to pat them that they do not know.
@controlchick The purring sound is a sound galahs like to make. Galahs can speak but they aren't as good at it as other parrots... they need to learn to do it young otherwise they usually won't pick it up later. My mom has two, a boy and girl. The girl doesn't speak but she's really sweet. The boy is new and he loves to talk and is very rambunctious and social. He likes being flipped over on his back and tickled too.
WOW! These are gorgeous birds! And I can tell you have a fantastic relationship with them. You are very lucky. I have a white-bellied caique that I just adore. With the right person, birds are the most wonderful companions.
The lower video quality here makes it hard to see, but Jethro has a grey iris, the others have a hazelnut colour. If Jethro is a female then he/she/shim is a lesbian Galah.
Just curious here, but did you get all three birds at the same time? Also, if you did, were they all from the same breeder? I've got a rosie myself, and I'm trying to figure out whether or not it's too late to try to bond her with another of her kind. Thanks :)
No, there were years between getting them, the first bird who has alone for a couple of years has by far the strongest desire to bond with people. My third bird hardly wants to come out the cage. If you want to introduce a friend to your bird I'd recommend sitting them in 2 separate cages near each other for a week before trying them in the same cage.
Oh my goodness, your birds are gorgeous! :) I have a question, because I might be getting some of these after college. Are they good shoulder birds? And do they cuddle like other parrots?
your galahs are beautiful ..I have one her name is Bambi I just posted a video of her ..when I got her 2 yrs ago she had no feathers due to plucking she is also missing her right eye but that does not stop her from anything .. thanks for sharing
I didn't teach my birds anything really, when they start doing certain things that are part of their personality I'd just say the word that matched what they were doing, like 'Dance' 'Wanna fight?' Just like a dog in a way you can't teach a dog to shake dry, but you teach the dog the shake means to do that thing they already do... None of my birds talk, had them for 10 years and tried my best not to be.
I have a cockatwo called stanley and hes maddd, but i use to have a galah but it died and it wuz actually really angry 4 like no reason lol we got it as a baby and everything but stanleys madd
because u neglect it... u have to spend at least for hours a day with your bird in order for it to be a happy healthy tame bird... what you have is a wild bird and belongs in the wild.... its probably only good for breeding now in captivity... sorry.
galahs are a type of cockatoo..... way to know about something you have control over... and galahs are not just randomly mad... you have to piss it off in order for him not to get what he wants.. which was actually probably what he needed to be a happy bird. all birds are angry when they dont get what they need. how old was he when he died? sounds like you arent very knowledgeable about birds...
No i mean mad as in cool. lolz, and my galah died of some sickness he caught off rosealas going near his cage. He wasn't always agro he would just sometimes go a bit physco and get over-excited and not in a sick way. But my new cockatwo is awsome and he is cool and madd but not your perpective of maddd
wait i didn't read my second message but anyway, my bird actually was aggro, I did not neglect it, i do not try to control it he really was skitzo, like you would be playing with him and then all of a sudden out of no where he would bite you and you weren't there to know if he was neglected or if he was controlled so f*** off.
dude... all birds will randomly bite... its how they are! your bird was probably not crazy it just had a different personality. all birds have different personalities.. you sound australian because of the wild rosella thing.... i hope you arent getting your birds from the wild...that is most likely why the poor things have mental issues if you do get em that way.
Females are shorter and fatter and have a reddish iris. Males are taller but lankier but seem stockier around the legs and wings. My male has a grey eye. Also the males always wait until last to eat when fresh food is placed in their cage, either mines a gentleman or he's pussy whipped.
Yeah he doesn't take well to change and we set the cage up in another part of the house and it gave him anxiety and he chews his own feathers. But I went down to a craft shop and got some thick pieces of leather off cuts so now he chews those instead. Out of all my birds he hates leaving the cage. Sitting on top of it is when hes the most happy. Try and take him into another room and he freaks out.
They are easy to tell apart. They have different eyes, different height, one has short legs the others have long legs. They also have distinct different sounds they make.
I got my first one like 11 years ago, she cost $50. At the time she was around 3 months old and was extremely aggressive and would draw blood on you if you came near her. But after a month or so of gentle interaction she started to realise I wasnt so bad. I was in high school at the time so had a bit of extra time to commit to taming her. But yes if you want a hand reared bird that is sweet from the moment you purchase them you are looking at $500 minimum.
Trading post maybe, but also research pet stores. If you want one already hand reared they are very expensive like $500-$1000. You should be able to find a young 3 month old one for around $100-$200 and train it yourself. They are far easier to train if they are by themselves. They will bite the crap out of you for the first month or so and it bloody hurts, but be patient and show them love and before too much time theyll be grooming your hair and face.
How lucky they are to have each other to play with. i wish my boy had a non human friend... well he does, but one that will like him back, unlike the dog!
Feed them bird seed but also at evening time we give them a small portion of vegies, leave a little corn on a cob and place it in the cage and theyll love it. They also really love chicken bones, which is a bit freaky in a cannibal kind of way but they love eating the bone marrow. Well the larger the cage the better, they live most the day in the cage seen here but I open the cage door when I get home and they like to sit on top and have a squawk and a dance, bit of exercise I guess.
Lol, yup the skin on my right hand resembles leather :P
Their diet is varied, every night they get a small dish containing what we're eating mashed up on a saucer. So allot of fresh veggies and pasta, they go bonkers for pasta.
We rescued a galah from a highway after she was hit by a car. We didn't think she'd live, but she's been going strong for five years now.
Though she's still a little wild because her main cage is a larger aviary outside. We bring her into a smaller cage, but unfortunately whenever we've tried to get her out she panics. We fear she may re injure herself.
Any tips?
Also, your Galahs are so pink. Ours is quite a dull pink. What do you feed them?
I've had mine since babies so I think it would be a little different then training an adult "wild" bird. But I'd recommend clipping its wing so it can't fly (only clip one) then it will soon learn it can't just jump away and just fly off randomly. Use food when training it and they love being scratched on the head. Give it lots of random things to eat, like fresh vegetables and things. My birds love chicken bones and fresh corn off the cob, they go nuts for it.
galapagos gave you some good advice but I would like to add to it. The wings should be trimmed back slowly and both wings should be trimmed together so the bird can control its flight better. Also, there is some detailed suggestion as to calm the bird when she is in her cage email me or you can contact a local parrot rescue for behavior advice. God bless you for taking her in and good luck!!
I have a Galah who turned 20 this year ,she is charming, quite a dancer, and is as spunky as your Jethro! Never uttered a word in 20 years though. She is just the sweetest thing. I wish you and your 3 babies a long happy life together
Well it just started by them bobbing their head and going crazy at random times so when they did that we said dance. You can't really make them do it, I have 3 and none of them talk, I would love to make them talk. I give then cardboard and pieces of wood to chew to satisfy that urge.
Wow I lve your birds i have a new baby boy he is so cute he whistles and talks but i can't seem to get him to dance. How did you get your birds to dance? My boy Nate chews absolutely everything how do you go with yours.
Yeah he's a real character, we named him Jethro because at first he seemed not too intelligent but as it turned out he had a different way of showing his smarts. We need to keep a clip on the cage door because he loves to open it and escape, he even sits there holding the door open for the other 2 to escape before he lets himself out.
Wow. Intelligent and strong haha. Reminds me of my cat. His name is Boo Kitty. He can open our sliding glass door. Even unlock it, actually. He chased a beetle one time outside, and the beetle went under a siding brick, and he moved the 6 lb siding brick. Smart and strong haha

I have a cockatwo called stanley and hes maddd, but i use to have a galah but it died and it wuz actually really angry 4 like no reason lol we got it as a baby and everything but stanleys madd
197dude197 2 years ago
because u neglect it... u have to spend at least for hours a day with your bird in order for it to be a happy healthy tame bird... what you have is a wild bird and belongs in the wild.... its probably only good for breeding now in captivity... sorry.
bananatree94 2 years ago
Nah i did spend heaps long with him, but most Galahs get angry when they don't get their way and Cockatwos are way better.
197dude197 2 years ago
galahs are a type of cockatoo..... way to know about something you have control over... and galahs are not just randomly mad... you have to piss it off in order for him not to get what he wants.. which was actually probably what he needed to be a happy bird. all birds are angry when they dont get what they need. how old was he when he died? sounds like you arent very knowledgeable about birds...
bananatree94 2 years ago
No i mean mad as in cool. lolz, and my galah died of some sickness he caught off rosealas going near his cage. He wasn't always agro he would just sometimes go a bit physco and get over-excited and not in a sick way. But my new cockatwo is awsome and he is cool and madd but not your perpective of maddd
197dude197 2 years ago
wait i didn't read my second message but anyway, my bird actually was aggro, I did not neglect it, i do not try to control it he really was skitzo, like you would be playing with him and then all of a sudden out of no where he would bite you and you weren't there to know if he was neglected or if he was controlled so f*** off.
197dude197 2 years ago
dude... all birds will randomly bite... its how they are! your bird was probably not crazy it just had a different personality. all birds have different personalities.. you sound australian because of the wild rosella thing.... i hope you arent getting your birds from the wild...that is most likely why the poor things have mental issues if you do get em that way.

How can you tell the difference between males and females?
verticalsmurf 2 years ago
Females are shorter and fatter and have a reddish iris. Males are taller but lankier but seem stockier around the legs and wings. My male has a grey eye. Also the males always wait until last to eat when fresh food is placed in their cage, either mines a gentleman or he's pussy whipped.

jethros wings look damaged
BaMenace 2 years ago
Yeah he doesn't take well to change and we set the cage up in another part of the house and it gave him anxiety and he chews his own feathers. But I went down to a craft shop and got some thick pieces of leather off cuts so now he chews those instead. Out of all my birds he hates leaving the cage. Sitting on top of it is when hes the most happy. Try and take him into another room and he freaks out.

They are easy to tell apart. They have different eyes, different height, one has short legs the others have long legs. They also have distinct different sounds they make.
How much is one in Holland?

xXEagleXx22 3 years ago
I got my first one like 11 years ago, she cost $50. At the time she was around 3 months old and was extremely aggressive and would draw blood on you if you came near her. But after a month or so of gentle interaction she started to realise I wasnt so bad. I was in high school at the time so had a bit of extra time to commit to taming her. But yes if you want a hand reared bird that is sweet from the moment you purchase them you are looking at $500 minimum.
galapagos68 3 years ago
i wont to get 1 or 1 like that eny help??
motocrossforlife122 3 years ago
Trading post maybe, but also research pet stores. If you want one already hand reared they are very expensive like $500-$1000. You should be able to find a young 3 month old one for around $100-$200 and train it yourself. They are far easier to train if they are by themselves. They will bite the crap out of you for the first month or so and it bloody hurts, but be patient and show them love and before too much time theyll be grooming your hair and face.

How lucky they are to have each other to play with. i wish my boy had a non human friend... well he does, but one that will like him back, unlike the dog!

i heard rose breasteds gain weight quickly i want to breed them so what type of diet do you feed them and what size cage
dakidmark90 3 years ago
Feed them bird seed but also at evening time we give them a small portion of vegies, leave a little corn on a cob and place it in the cage and theyll love it. They also really love chicken bones, which is a bit freaky in a cannibal kind of way but they love eating the bone marrow. Well the larger the cage the better, they live most the day in the cage seen here but I open the cage door when I get home and they like to sit on top and have a squawk and a dance, bit of exercise I guess.

very nice galah
SalehKWT 3 years ago
Oh so beautiful, and their color is so deep. Is that due to diet or is it a camera issue? Lovely anyway, and it looks like you have tough hands.
searella59 3 years ago
Lol, yup the skin on my right hand resembles leather :P
Their diet is varied, every night they get a small dish containing what we're eating mashed up on a saucer. So allot of fresh veggies and pasta, they go bonkers for pasta.

Aw. Cute! Like my name. I love galahs. :)

Your galahs are darling!
CCkissesx 4 years ago
I've had mine since babies so I think it would be a little different then training an adult "wild" bird. But I'd recommend clipping its wing so it can't fly (only clip one) then it will soon learn it can't just jump away and just fly off randomly. Use food when training it and they love being scratched on the head. Give it lots of random things to eat, like fresh vegetables and things. My birds love chicken bones and fresh corn off the cob, they go nuts for it.
galapagos68 4 years ago
galapagos gave you some good advice but I would like to add to it.

Hi beautiful birds. I have a baby boy Nate he talks and chews everything but i can't get him to dance. How did you get your birds to dance.
rahrah78 4 years ago
Well it just started by them bobbing their head and going crazy at random times so when they did that we said dance. You can't really make them do it, I have 3 and none of them talk, I would love to make them talk. I give then cardboard and pieces of wood to chew to satisfy that urge.
galapagos68 4 years ago
Wow I lve your birds i have a new baby boy he is so cute he whistles and talks but i can't seem to get him to dance. How did you get your birds to dance? My boy Nate chews absolutely everything how do you go with yours.

I really like your birds! Especially Jethro. He's awesome!
Mydnytefantasy89 4 years ago
Yeah he's a real character, we named him Jethro because at first he seemed not too intelligent but as it turned out he had a different way of showing his smarts. We need to keep a clip on the cage door because he loves to open it and escape, he even sits there holding the door open for the other 2 to escape before he lets himself out.
galapagos68 4 years ago
