He knows its wrong to laugh bc the subject matter is a somber one, the audience is not in the spot light so they dont have an urge to hold anything in, thus its less funny.

Somthing like this happened to me, my lung collapsed and i had a tube sticking out my chest, which would make laughing hurt. Usually i dont find mad tv all that funny, but not being able to laugh made it more funny, and holding it in made me want to laugh even more.
