Born and raised in Botle Heights (Mathews St and Fourth) but in the 60's when I was a kid it wasn't overcrowded and people were so nice. There was a great Chinese restaurant directly acroos the street from Roosevelt High called the "Yen Hong Cafe" that was the best ever and Brooklyn Ave had all the Jewish stores and synagogues. It was beautiful. I go back now and all the beautiful old houses are covered with stucco and wrought iron. Sad, Gang members that don't respect elders or children.

Actually, boyle heights is currently a dump... but, with some motivation, care, and open minds, everyone that lives here can start picking up their trash and stop pretending that looking miserable passes for acceptable. just because your poor doesn't mean you cant have style. this place needs a major clean up. I guess boyle height's was the first area they made in east la cause in the american me movie they mention broadway alot which was a famous east la cruising spot but now that city of east la area is considered la lincon heights area but used to be east la's downtown kind of like pico aliso aliso village.
