a+ is the adjoint operator to a-. Both operators are not self adjoint. Therefore a+ and a- are not observable operators.

quantum mechanics is a probabilistic theory of matter which treats space and time on different footings. quantum field theory is a probabilistic theory of matter and forces which unifies space and time through the special principle of relativity. The relation between the two is that at relative speeds much less than the speed of light quantum field theory is approximately the same as quantum mechanics.
