At the time of the pilot, IIRC Phoo Action was going to be considered (with Ray Winstons daughter Jamie), as BH was shown alongside a few other pilots , BH is the ONLY time I contacted the Beeb as it seemed like it wasn't going to be considered as an ongoing drama, where Phoo Action was! and a lot of peeps felt the same. I liked the BH pilot episode and as part of BH history it is worth viewing the whole thing. Don't get me wrong I love Aiden Leonora and Russell, but I loved the pilot too.
I just read a comment saying the characters were changed for a more main stream audience like it was a bad thing. Is it relay that bad they made the show more appealing to more people. Also I think the characters changed for the better this Mitchell looks like he would cut himself before any one else. Annie was just empty of emotion to have any strong feeling. A good change over all.
this Mitchell is too brooding and you can tell he is trying to act like he thinks vampires 'should' be instead of Aidan who plays Mitchell as a character who happens to be a vampire which is what the series is all about. Normal people who jsut happen to be different
I was devasted when I saw the second episode with the 'new' actors. These were real, the ones they chose as the regulkar crew clearly 'prettier' with mass appeal - lacked the edge of these guys.
However the mainstream are clearly pleased as is proven by most of the comments here.
This annie has no range. She droned on. This mitchell would hsve been great as a supporting role ...sleek sexy slightly greasy ol philosophising bud of Mitchell's. Mitchell's character is able to blend and lead not just be a shadow.
Er, I prefer the original pilot (and cast) as well. I have gotten used to the new set,and they now seem like the 'real' ones. but having seen these first and being gripped by the premise line of the story, these seem like the real-thing - more hardcore, and the new set, more syrupy. I think that if you are centuries old, you will have seen so much of the darkside of human nature you would be more tike this one. Pain makes you harder, not cuter - even if it is nice to look at.
well said. Those of us who watched the pilot and nagged the BBC for a series did so based partly on the wonderful cast. The two new members happened to be amazing but that doesn't detract from the originals.
Thank God They Changed The Actors For Annie And Mitchell If They Didnt I Dont Think I would of watched sieries 1 2 or 3 it would of been shit tbh lol xxxx
This Annie looks too solid. The current Annie looks more squiggly (if thats the right word) and more lovable. This Mitchell just looks looks like a 25 year old emo living in a fantasy world, not a 100 or 200 year old vampire struggling with everything he has done in his past.
I just watched another scene and you know, this Mitchell is ridiculously tall, he towers over George. I wonder if that is part of the reason they replaced him. I like the Mitchell they had for series proper, I don't think you'd have felt the struggle to be human so much with this guy, he seems a little too apathetic. Aidan's Mitchell made you want him to succeed and thus his failures were more dramatic. I like Annie too. This one is OK but she doesn't have the warmth Lenora has.
i love being human but this cast just makes me want to be sick, i can't tell what annie is saying half the time and mitchell looks like he cares way to much about his appearance, and won't take his hand away from his mouth. i'm glad they recast this would have been awful
I remember seeing this. The current cast definately were the right people for the job, but that's what a pilot is for. To see if there's anything they can improve on the original idea. If it werent for the pilot, the series would not have been commissioned. Pilots are always a good idea :)
I hate that accent that Annie has in the pilot. She sounds backwards. If she's supposed to be from Manchester, I can tell you that very few Mancs actually have such a strong accent. And Mitchell just comes over like an Anne Rice Cliche. No offense to the actors, I just think that the characters were not properly fleshed out yet.
wow, how strange to see them playing those parts.the girl was OK, but her face wasn't as expressive as leonora.also aiden looks more brooding and dark.more behind the eyes i feel.or perhaps that's because i've seen them through 3 series and im accustomed to their styles of acting? x
slagging off this actress for her portrayal of annie, just fucking stupid.

ok, all you people slagging off these actors are idiots
first, you're saying this annie is way too aggressive - this is ONE scene from the whole episode, and her hostility is in response to george's, trhoughout the rest of the entire episode she is MUCH warmer and friendly.
and you all seem to be forgetting that THIS is the version people requested the BBC commission a series for, so you have THESE actors to thank, otherwise the Being Human you know would never have happened, so stfu will you?
Loved this cast, interesting chemistry. Would have loved to see more of them. Enjoy the series's cast, too, but Annie and Mitchell there seem to have fewer edges now.
I think that it's silly to compare this cast to the current one... the characters are completely different (apart from George, obviously) and I believe the series would have gone in a completely different direction if these characters were kept, it would have been a different show. It would have lacked that family feeling, the characters in the pilot seem to clash too much.
I definitely prefer the current cast............... I agree with comment about this Mitchell coming off as rather pretentious.... He & this Annie are over acting, & it looks as tho', they're trying too hard........ This Mitchell knows he looks good & is over doing it for the camera..........
Aidan, doesn't care about his looks, & gives this naturally scruffy yet sexy appeal......... Lenora, comes off as naturally sweet, charming & naive & just lovable.......... Great chemistry with current cast
Wow I'm glad they changed the actors. This Mitchell might've been okay, but he looks emo, lacks intensity and I don't buy him as a century old vampire. This Annie is terrible. Nah, Lenora and Aidan are much better actors and make the characters feel "real". This Annie isn't good at all, she's too mouthy and doesn't show much emotions towards her own death where's Lenora was still confused after a year. This Mitchell sucks too. No wisdom for some1 who's 100 years old plus he didn't have a dark personality. Looked like he wanted to be in Green Day or something. Aidan Turner makes this roll much stronger and believable plus he's just a better actor. My opinion though.
I liked the original Annie more, but the original Mitchell less. Guy Flannigan was too much punk rock and forced sex appeal. He didn't fit what the series story wanted from the Mitchell character. Andrea Riseborough seemed like a lot better Annie, though, as you could feel her emotions much better. I think it was her accent that did her in, ultimately. Most American actors have a similar "nuetral" American accent (Midwestern). Andrea's dialect didn't work for an "every woman" kind of character.
This Mitchell had a young and punky look to him. There simply wasn't any wisdom to him. With Turner you can see it. You believe Turner is nearly 100 years old. This Annie has no charm.
And as for the three of these actors together...NO CHEMISTRY!
I seriously doubt it would have been picked up after season one with this cast. Casting directors and producers recast for a reason. They don't do it because they are bored!
I know we attach ourselves to what we know, and I do think these actors are good, they just don't look right as the roles... Mitchell's too... human. And Annie's voice annoys me. ;L
Just a pity that the pilot was not added to the first boxset.. hope this will be released one day. When I first saw this, it was easily the best of the shown pilots (just wished I had saved it on my sky+)
Like the current Annie, but at the same time - Andrea Riseborough is superb actress and I am certain she would have made a fine Annie in the long run (but then, would she be in some many good films such as Brighton Rock??) No problem with her accent at all.
Seriously, why is this Mitchell sooooo emo? Just give him a blade, gun, or poison so he can end it (even though he's already dead). I can't imagine him with the same comedic timing that Aidan Turner brings to the role. And this Annie....WTH is she wearing?!
@PushingPies OMG! I was thinking the exact same thing. I know Mitchell is dead too, but for someone who survives off blood he sure sounds like he's been drained of all his!
Im not saying these two are bad, but I much perfer Aidan and Lenora, they've captured the characters 10 times better. This Mitchell is just... it's too 'vampirey' looking. They're meant to be trying to 'be human' so Mitchell is just a darker looking character who is a vampire not a typical looking vampire. and this Annie is far different from how the Annie played by Lenora is, who is a very good character.. I'm glad these didn't stay...
i think it may be the dialouge here, rather than the acting; it feels a bit try-hard, too much like a sitcom in the beginning
Admittedly, this Mitchell isn't quite as good as Aidan Turner (I don't believe that Mitchell could be capable of all the horrible stuff he's meant to have done) , but Russell Tovey isn't particularly brillant there; in the series, he's tonnes better :/
I think the show just improved as a whole; cast and writing :)
Oh...i missed the pilot of being human and started watching from like episode 3...im glad i didnt watch the pilot (sort of) because i love Lenora and Aidan...especially Lenora because she was amazing in sugar rush<3 i love her ditzyness and kind of 'ooh' she is...this Annie...i dont really like her. And i dont like this Mitchell either. I guess its just because ive never seen them play before.
My problem with this annie and mitchell is they work well together but don't work with George. And Annie doesn't have the adorable ditzyness that Annie [Lenora] has in the current series.
I have nothing against Andrea Riseborough or Guy Flanagan's performances, like Toby Whithouse said, they were good but just wasnt right for the type of show he was creating, this is more dark, gothic and very obviously supernatural while the series seems more grounded and based in reality.
doesnt feel right, maybe it is cuz im so used to the new cast. but the two older cast members dont feel real. They seem over the top emo and the old annie doesnt feel like the personality u would want her personality to b u kno wat i mean??? the new annie is all cute and the outfit is practical and u feel and see the despair. and she acts like me or other whiney girls i knew growing up .. i dont see that in the chick in the above video. & this mitchell is too emo . i love my new mitchell
I LOVE this pilot, this Annie (with her strong, strong accent) and this Mitchell (all gothic, no muscular), I'm still watching Being Human and I like it, but I also miss the "old" Mitchell and the "old" Annie
Humm. In definitely like Aidan as Mitchell. (and lets face it, we all like looking at Aidan's face. I could watch Aidan talk about planting sunflowers for six hours and enjoy it.) However I like this guy too. He's just generally good at playing a vampire. I like how intense he looks.
haha.. George and this Annie has no chemistry. this Annie seem too scripted. :D.. And about the Mitchell, he plays the character differently, very very very different. He is too goth and the way he talks is just being too mysterious and weird. thank god they made changes.:D
I like both of these actors. Either of the actors would have brought a different dimension to the show. I think the guy playing the vampire has the brooding, languid air about him and its an interesting contrast to aidan's cheeky irish charmer. Not to stereotype :P
No No I love the New Annie way beter she is so awesome and the New Vampire. This Mitchell is way to boreing and dull. Nothing like the New better one lol
i dont like this annie, hard to understand her speach...she doesnt show good emotion, the mitchell-he is ok, but he tries to hard to be dark and dashing.
i like the real mitchell and annie better... no offense to those who like these guys but this mitchell lacks the humor and generall cuteness mitchell should have... george is the same actor so no complaints
I like the 'new' cast. But this cast would've been nice too. I wonder why the producers thought to change things around? Luckily, the new cast seems to click with everyone, but I could see how things could've been with these other actors as well. I mean the other actors here seem to have more edge and not so much of the likeability factor that the 'new' actors have. Either way, great show!!!
i was really upset to find them replaced because that mitchell is soo hot its not even funny. aiden is so ugly for a vampire, i had to stop watching it. it sucks because it looked like an amazing show until they switched the hot guy for an ugly dude. not saying hes ugly for all of you, but how i see it, he's hideous.
I watched the pilot first and got used to the original cast from the pilot. Then when they started the actual episodes they changed. it took me a while to get used to the new cast. after a few episodes I like the new cast better. Besides, if you noticed Annie from the pilot has a very strong dialect. Kind of hard to understand if you are from the US. I still liked the Mitchell they used from the pilot. And of course George they couldn't replace him. He was just too damn good.
I saw the pilot and I really liked it but I can't be bothered with the cast they continued with, they kinda killed it for me plus I seem to be the only person that prefers the pilot version anyways.
I think the 'new' Annie was a much better choice in a mass appeal sense. I had to really listen to understand what this one was saying, but the new Annie speaks much clearer, therefore possibly broadening the shows audience (over seas). Excellent re-cast in my opinion!
I'd heard of being human, and thought nothing of it, but now I love the series, especially Mitchell. But if they had kept with these actors/actresses, I won't have bothered. I hate the way Annie and Mitchell are portraited in this pilot.
@FoxInAShoe I completely agree, I wouldn't have watched it. This Mitchell, I can't even take him seriously and this Annie does really seem to have the same spirit. If the cast had stayed as it was I would have called it a worthless show and moved on.
I'm happy they changed Annie and Mitchell. I love the ones now not these two. But that's probably because I've watched 2 series with them and these 2 are complete strangers to the show for me. George! I love George! Glad they kept him for the real show. :D
Tried watching the new Mitchell but he does nothing for me. I was smitten with Guy Flanagan and his laid back, 'too cool for school' attitude from the minute I saw him standing by the car with that umbrella. It doesn't seem like he's done much else sadly. But I really cant muster up much interest in the show with him missing. I'd have felt the same about Russell Tovey who is adorable. I wish them a ton of success but I'll give it a pass.
To everyone commenting on how "this Annie" and "this Mitchell" are shit, actually, we attach ourselves to what we know so, if these actors had been kept, and let's just say it was Lenora Chrichlow and Aidan Turner in the pilot, you would be exactly the same.
@XBabyLippyX That's how it worked for me; I first saw the pilot and had to get used to the new cast. I now prefer the new cast, but it took me a couple of episodes to get there.
@rodneyscat I never saw this pilot episode. Love the "Annie" but not keen on "Mitchell" - but you are right - if these had been the cast all the way through it would be normal. However, I still think the current "Mitchell" is better than this one :) Sorry.
Sorry, replying to your comment "we attach ourselves to what we know so, if these actors had been kept, and let's just say it was Lenora Chrichlow and Aidan Turner in the pilot, you would be exactly the same." I don't think we can say it would automatically work in reverse - I might have just tuned out and not bothered to tell friends to watch if the original pilot actors had continued.
@XBabyLippyX The ghost is decent, the vampire however is crap. His screen presence is off, and though I like the ghost, if she was brought into the new cast, she wouldn't have worked out. I think the new cast is very dynamic and they all relate well to each other on screen. I agree with you though, since i just watched the US pilot and hated everything, even though we(I'm american) tried to clone everything from the UK versions format. 2nd time watching though made me rethink.
I'm SOOO glad they changed the cast!!! No offense, but "this Annie" is a bit too annoying. And "this Mitchell" looks like a Guitar Hero avatar, completely lacks the reality of the actual Mitchell. Hope these two actors will land suitable roles, though...
although i like these characters, theres no comparison really,,,,,,,thank god for aidan turner and leonora critchlow.......also thank god that russell stayed on,cos it wouldnt be the same without him......
yeah i kinda agree cause annie seems to sharp and mean whereas the secound one was a really nice and fantastic character! and aiden plays Mitchell amazingly!
No! Gawd, no! This feels so wrong! And I know that I'm biased, after getting to know the new cast, but these guys are just NOT right...
In all fairness, they are clearly talented...and attractive...but they're also trying too hard. There's no sincerity, no honesty. 'Mitchell' is like this sexually ambivalent rock star...and 'Annie' is this irritating school girl with no charm at all. Ugh...
Russell is a gem, though. I'm glad that he stuck around :)
I've never seen the pilot before but Annie doesn't seem right at all XD she's just... I don't know, everything seems wrong for her character. The look, the accent, it just doesn't seem to work.
And mitchell seems like he's trying way to hard... comes off a bit pretentious :/
does anyone know. where i might be able to see this pilot episode. ive watched season 1 and love season 2. but ive not been able to find this anywhere. only just the little clips online. if anyone kows what sites to check out. be grately appreciated. and yeah i agree. im glad they kept george. and got in the new cast. best show ive ever seen in years.
Andrea Riseborough is a brilliant actress and was nominated for a BAFTA for Best Actress last year. It's just that she wasn't right for this part neither was the original actor for Mitchell. The current trio is perfection.
i think its a bit rich to judge the quality of these actors by 3 minutes of film. I haven't seen the entire pilot and it is strange to see these alternative actors in the same role but i wouldn't say that these actors are awful.
yeh the first thing i watched was the pilot i thought it was awesome andrea's annie = catherine tate lulz an d um...i didnt kno bout this mitchell he annoyed me when he spoke but george(russsell tuvey) gave me chills in a good way...meh...i actually loved the show because of him wow but i loooved the newer cast they bumped this show up to my top ten much more engaging cast and lenora brought out what i thought was annie better than andrea and the chemistry between rus and aiden is eletric<3
PS if Phoo Action was ever to be made ( I don't think so tho cute idea) Edgar Wright would have to direct it...

bethanaay2 1 year ago
Just a pity that the pilot was not added to the first boxset.. hope this will be released one day. When I first saw this, it was easily the best of the shown pilots (just wished I had saved it on my sky+)
Like the current Annie, but at the same time - Andrea Riseborough is superb actress and I am certain she would have made a fine Annie in the long run (but then, would she be in some many good films such as Brighton Rock??) No problem with her accent at all.

Lol, this is so shit compared to the final show :)
AlexBaldwinFTW 1 year ago
Seriously, why is this Mitchell sooooo emo? Just give him a blade, gun, or poison so he can end it (even though he's already dead). I can't imagine him with the same comedic timing that Aidan Turner brings to the role. And this Annie....WTH is she wearing?!
sonaliegh 1 year ago 2
The accent on Mitchell... what is that?! Is he trying to sound 'street'?

The Annie accent? The new Annie is a lot better and Mitchel well thank god they found Aidan

Love Aidan and Lenora!!!! I think these actors wouldnt work out and the show wouldnt be the hit it is, if it wasnt for the leads.....

This just made me laugh. I'm not even sure why.
I know Mitchell is dead but Jesus, is the actor?

@PushingPies OMG! I was thinking the exact same thing. I know Mitchell is dead too, but for someone who survives off blood he sure sounds like he's been drained of all his!

i have no words for this annie
Clumziigal 1 year ago
Im not saying these two are bad, but I much perfer Aidan and Lenora, they've captured the characters 10 times better. This Mitchell is just... it's too 'vampirey' looking. They're meant to be trying to 'be human' so Mitchell is just a darker looking character who is a vampire not a typical looking vampire. and this Annie is far different from how the Annie played by Lenora is, who is a very good character.. I'm glad these didn't stay...
jamieelynnx 1 year ago
i think it may be the dialouge here, rather than the acting; it feels a bit try-hard, too much like a sitcom in the beginning

SEASON 3! cant wait!
(:

has anyone seen the full version? or do you know where I can view it?
willownat666 1 year ago
My problem with this annie and mitchell is they work well together but don't work with George. And Annie doesn't have the adorable ditzyness that Annie [Lenora] has in the current series.
lizzielonglegs 1 year ago
I have nothing against Andrea Riseborough or Guy Flanagan's performances, like Toby Whithouse said, they were good but just wasnt right for the type of show he was creating, this is more dark, gothic and very obviously supernatural while the series seems more grounded and based in reality.
Remus0387 1 year ago
doesnt feel right, maybe it is cuz im so used to the new cast. but the two older cast members dont feel real.

Violaluisalina 1 year ago
Humm. In definitely like Aidan as Mitchell. (and lets face it, we all like looking at Aidan's face. I could watch Aidan talk about planting sunflowers for six hours and enjoy it.) However I like this guy too. He's just generally good at playing a vampire. I like how intense he looks.
yellowpages67 1 year ago
hey have they done a second piolt with the other cast coz i live in australia and the other two (not george) arnt in it?
xomwaxo 1 year ago
haha.. George and this Annie has no chemistry. this Annie seem too scripted. :D.. And about the Mitchell, he plays the character differently, very very very different. He is too goth and the way he talks is just being too mysterious and weird. thank god they made changes.:D
uglybetty40891 1 year ago
I like both of these actors. Either of the actors would have brought a different dimension to the show. I think the guy playing the vampire has the brooding, languid air about him and its an interesting contrast to aidan's cheeky irish charmer. Not to stereotype :P

Novelwit2000 1 year ago 3
i was really upset to find them replaced because that mitchell is soo hot its not even funny. aiden is so ugly for a vampire, i had to stop watching it. it sucks because it looked like an amazing show until they switched the hot guy for an ugly dude. not saying hes ugly for all of you, but how i see it, he's hideous.
providemehope 1 year ago
I watched the pilot first and got used to the original cast from the pilot. Then when they started the actual episodes they changed. it took me a while to get used to the new cast. after a few episodes I like the new cast better. Besides, if you noticed Annie from the pilot has a very strong dialect. Kind of hard to understand if you are from the US. I still liked the Mitchell they used from the pilot. And of course George they couldn't replace him. He was just too damn good.
firestepher72 1 year ago
I'm sooo glad they kept Russell! He's too adorable!
But seriously, even if I hadn't watched two seasons with Lenora and Aiden in, I still think that I would have preferred them.
Lenora plays Annie so much...happier, or more hopeful, or kinder, or something.
Yeah, and Aiden's just Aiden. You know, perfect and all that.

They are kinda both over-acting. Like the most Norwegian actors/actresses. I would probably not watched this show if it was like this.

Annie? No problem. But the guy playing Mitchel. I don't like it. I've just seen two episodes of Being Human, so don't tell me I'm "attached".

providemehope 1 year ago
I think the 'new' Annie was a much better choice in a mass appeal sense. I had to really listen to understand what this one was saying, but the new Annie speaks much clearer, therefore possibly broadening the shows audience (over seas). Excellent re-cast in my opinion!
iheartigbyxo 1 year ago
I'd heard of being human, and thought nothing of it, but now I love the series, especially Mitchell. But if they had kept with these actors/actresses, I won't have bothered. I hate the way Annie and Mitchell are portraited in this pilot.
FoxInAShoe 1 year ago
@FoxInAShoe I completely agree, I wouldn't have watched it. This Mitchell, I can't even take him seriously and this Annie does really seem to have the same spirit. If the cast had stayed as it was I would have called it a worthless show and moved on.
lyricsXrocktheworld 1 year ago
I'm happy they changed Annie and Mitchell. I love the ones now not these two. But that's probably because I've watched 2 series with them and these 2 are complete strangers to the show for me. George! I love George! Glad they kept him for the real show. :D
TheUnderagedLiar 1 year ago

XBabyLippyX 1 year ago 37
@XBabyLippyX That's how it worked for me; I first saw the pilot and had to get used to the new cast. I now prefer the new cast, but it took me a couple of episodes to get there.

@rodneyscat Ditto. Now I've seen enough of the series to dislike these two lol
SparkyMintChipx 1 year ago

A4T 1 year ago
@XBabyLippyX Yeah... but still. If you compare the actors, the "real" ones are better.

@XBabyLippyX ya but the mitchell we now is better the this one the actor sounds a little.... out of it
Necro6662 1 year ago
@XBabyLippyX The ghost is decent, the vampire however is crap. His screen presence is off, and though I like the ghost, if she was brought into the new cast, she wouldn't have worked out. I think the new cast is very dynamic and they all relate well to each other on screen. I agree with you though, since i just watched the US pilot and hated everything, even though we(I'm american) tried to clone everything from the UK versions format. 2nd time watching though made me rethink.

No!

The old Mitchell lacked intensity, and the old Annie didn't have the sweetness that makes her character so poignant. I like the new cast better.
