This episode of Curb (entitled "Shaq" S2E8) reuses the same plot from the Seinfeld episode "The Understudy" (S6E24) with Bette Midler. Larry accidently injures Shaq during at a basketball game (at the beginning of the season), causing him to withdraw from playing for the rest of the season, the incident is turned into a media frenzy, a motive is believed to be present (LD is a Knicks fan), and the whole city of Los Angeles is outraged with Larry.

@edlitz36 George Costanza (who is based on Larry) accidently injures Bette Middler during a softball game (at the start of her Broadway season of "Rochelle Rochelle"), causing her to withdraw from her Broadway season, the incident is turned into a media frenzy, a motive is believed to be present (with Bette Midler out of commission, Jerry's girlfriend, the understudy, proceeds to take over Bette's role), and the whole city of New York is outraged with George and Jerry.
