i saw them play at the opera house in toronto, circa 1995. they were opening act for another band. i can't remember the headliner, though remember drinking ex in the alley waiting to get in, i'd not heard of them before, was hooked after hearing this song. its been a long time, still love it.
I just love this song...for some reason this sounded slower than I remember...The video..eh? It was o.k but I don't think it did the lyrics justice. Either way thanks to my roomate in college who turned me onto Innocence Mission :) love love them!
I saw them live one night long ago in LA at the Whiskey. Oh my. I was standing right at the stage. Innocence Mission, you guys blew me completely out of my socks. So true. So pure was your live sound. So beautiful. I'll never forget. Love you.
I've loved this song for years, but never knew the title. This is the first time I've seen the video and it is also great! Very few artists of today can compare to this.
I remember when this came out, I thought it was Mazzy Star...and then I was disappointed because I couldn't find this album at my local record shop. Great song.
@SupahGeenus I thought it was Mazzy Star too! I think their song Fade Into You was out around the same time and their voices and guitar are similar. Then I saw IM open for Natalie Merchant in Milwaukee, they sang this song and I've been a huge fan ever since.
The Innocence Mission. They opened for some band.... at the Opera House in Toronto circa 1995 I figure. I do remember drinking beers underage by the stairs and thinking that the song being played was sounding very familiar. "bright as yellow" I had heard the song on CFNY though didn't realize that they were actually the opening act. A very vivid memory for me, they put on a great show and I still listen to the two albums I picked up yrs ago.
A few nights ago, my kids and a few friends were catching lightning bugs - a great early summer activity here in the southern USA...the adults were watching on our back deck, having a few drinks and enjoying our kids' enthusiasm..i then started playing this song on my ipod...it was perfect for the moment...what great song, and voice...but I'm still not sure which is more beautiful, her voice or face!?
@theflorigamist Lol. I am so glad to read, that i wasn't the only one with that idea! Though, I was more tempted to dye my hair orange/red ala Ethan Embry. ;)
gracious. this takes me back. I was only a kid in the 90s but I remember those long, shapeless, floral dresses. It's kinda hard to understand how they got popular, but at the time I know they seemed very summery and romatic. :) wonder what I'll think of today's fashions 15 years from now.
Oh, and the song is awesome. I didn't hear it back then but it still seems very fresh
I discovered this band in 1993 in China. Their first album, which is just plain hard to find, was part of the small music library of the radio station I was producing a show from. I couldn't believe it when I found the CD and started listening to it. I've been listening to them ever since.
This song totally takes me back to summertime in the 90's sitting in my room with the windows open and just looking at the trees and catching the occasional cool breeze. Only a song this solid can do something like that.
A song from my fav album fI remember rom my teen years, Empire Records Soundtrack. It was a mixed brew of indie rock treats. Some are better than others. This is certainly one of my favs. What makes those songs so wonderful is a the artists all listening to each other, really listening, and giving back. It's something so simple yet so affective. You end up with a quality produced album that also feels so live, so in the moment. :)
This band is simply amazing. I would love for them to come to San Francisco to play for all of us but they very rarely even play out. I have created a Facebook page to encourage them to do just that. Please search for and "LIKE" my page entitled, Dear Innocence Mission- Please, Please TOUR. (youtube won't let me post link here).
The goal is to somehow have Karen or the band to hear of this movement and know how much we'd love for them to tour and then do it! Tell your friends.
@skatttterbrain3 I had the rare opportunity to see them in Denver at a reputable bar.. and they were simply amazing! They hung out with all of us for a while. :)
@esstampclub Well, I beleive the firefly is yellow. They are christian rock is root. I think the whole seed of though is about faith is finding the inner light, that even though it's weak, it's lights the darkness. Kind of a melancholy inner child soul searching. BTW, I'm not religious at all, so I aint preaching:3, but this is one of my favorite groups of all time. In my opinion, it's what Mazzy Star should have been.
I still remember seeing them at Borders Bookstore off of La Cienega in Los Angeles at the time they came out with this song in 1995. They were just about to go on tour to open for Natalie Merchant at the time. This is my favorite song by them.
I've been listening to this bands later stuff for six months now, can't for the life of me understand why I haven't heard this before... And Kate Peris, along with her voice is stunning in this video.
Guilty pleasure? There's nothing to be guilty about when it comes to Innocence Mission. And that's coming from me, one of the biggest death metal nerds in the world.
@Jaysthename It befuddles me to think a concept as esoteric as Samhain would bear any direct relevance to the comment of mine which you have responded to. I have made no attempt at feigning any fashion of grandiosity and, frankly, you have already illustrated your own hypocrisy which is heavily laden within your assertion. Why you have singled out a comment I made 1 year ago is absolutely beyond the scope of what I am willing to entertain, but I will say, however: it speaks volumes about you.
@DarianHarman I was referring to Samhain THE BAND, which is one of the best known death rock/metal bands ever. The fact that you called yourself "one of the biggest death metal nerds in the world," and yet didn't know that most elementary of facts, is a better retort to your ridiculous pseudo-intellectual comments than I could compose myself. [Also, I was drunk and this is just the internet. Stop being such a baby.]
@Jaysthename I did not make the connection is because, plainly and simply, the band Samhain was neither metal nor death metal. I gave you the benefit of the doubt in suspecting that you might be referring to a metaphysical concept, though I now see that I was mistaken in offering you any manner of a berth. Your attempt to troll me has failed utterly and completely, and your idiocy is now in plain sight for all to see. As for being a baby, I'm not sure I follow. Conversation=over. You lose.
Innocence Mission comes from a Amish/Mennonite background. They emphasize simplicity. If you look at the band members they have that plain angelic look. Amy Grant sang a few of the songs Karen Peris wrote. "tis the gift to be simple, "tis the gift to be free.
@whaledone100 Although lancaster has many amish, TIM are catholic, and some previous cd releases have raised money for catholic causes. I dont believe there is any affiliation to the amish/mennonite communities.

@thebeststoryevertold that is a pretty poor story! It amazes me how many people confuse TIM with Mazzy Star, they are like different ends of the spectrum as far as I am concerned. It goes without saying that this is just one of very many unbelievably beautiful original songs written and performed by TIM.
@thebeststoryevertold Mazzy Star? They have never performed this song to my knowledge. It's funny, when I first heard this song on the radio in the 90s, I thought it was Mazzy Star. The voice and guitar are similar. Then I went to a Natalie Merchant concert and IM opened and sang this song. I've been a huge fan ever since.
