I wonder when Mark Leonard did this episode if he knew that this role would be the one he would forever be remembered for? His performance and Nimoy's would define what every Vulcan would be like from then on.
The funny thing is, Sarek actually likes and respects Kirk, so why he can't afford some respect towards his son for serving under the finest captain in the fleet, on the most reputable and powerful ship is something any father would be immensely proud of, Vulcan or no
So, let me get this straight: The son of the Vulcan Ambassador to Earth is serving on the USS Enterprise and Kirk doesn't know about it? Find the Personal Chief and keel-haul him (or her)!
This is a LOT like those films in which the significant other is introduced to the parents who seem to like the person they've just met more than *their own kid*. Awkward dinner tableaus and not-so-subtle compliments ensue, almost always followed by dessert and conflict, and heartbreaking backstories on the porch lol
I think the dramatic music is there to suggest tension in the scene that is not readily apparent to the viewer until you find out that Spock and his father do not get along so well.
I love how Amanda's like "must watch everyone's reactions because this is hella funny", especially when Spock reveals they're his parents. She's like, "And now for Kirk's reaction! LOL! :D"
Literally raped the replay button...this was such an epic moment when kirk finally meets spocks parents...star track definitely for the win...SPOCK <3
@NonstopRam Funny you should say that :) Leonard Nimoy got the idea of the Vulcan salute from a visit to his local synagogue when he was a child - the salute being part of a "blessing" or "anointment" ceremony.
hey in our world plenty of racists marry someone they profess to hate, almost like a domination thing. cop who shoved a broomstick up a black mans butt in the 90s was dating a black chick. then he sez "Im not racist, see..." Oh, ahm, DUH!!! =:-O
This is the first time that Kirk meets Spock's parents. Sarek was important in Next Generation too, and Spock. Revealing new things about Vulcan society. Sarek disliked strongly (hate isn't the word to use) Spock's joining of Starfleet.
@dfoxx007 Another HUGE contrast between the two Sareks is Sarek admitting the reason he married Amanda was because he loved her.... as much as I love Sarek in the original version I can't imagine him admitting that unless it was near the end of his life. The closest he ever came to such an admission was in Star Trek 3 when he said his logic was uncertain where his son was concerned.
@lomeinie yup. Only through that meld with Picard before we heard any of that, and even then only because he didn't want to screw up his final mission.
I've come to consider that deep base sound as kind of 'Spock's Theme'. Whenever there's some really Spock-y related stuff going on, you hear that base sound.
I just love Bones at the begining complaing about how hard the Vulcan salute. It is hard to do. I can only do it with my left hand. The ring finger on my right just won't cooperate.
Way to go Kirk. Talk about your painfully akward moments.
@BloodyCarrie Try doing it while alternating which fingers you have touching-your pointer and middle, index and pinky/pointer and pinky separate with middle and index touching. It freaks people out at the conventions.
@BloodyCarrie are you left handed by chance? It is also much easier for me to do with my left hand but I am left handed so I kind of assumed that had something to do with it.
Kirk can be so DENSE =A= I mean, Spock was making such a face, knowing him as Kirk knows him, it was clear that there was a problem... plus, it was clear also that the woman was human, have you ever seen a Vulcan woman with warm eyes and smiling like that?
and since Surak was clearly ignoring him, he should have stopped to drive the attention on him ò_o I felt akward for both of them ò_o'
@cherryantacid421 Naw, overkill for TOS would have been Kirk somehow finding a reason to have his shirt ripped off, Mccoy pronouncing him dead, and one of the random red shirts doing the mr T pose(what kind of honor salute is that?!) in the background getting killed.
@jarvisel yeah but they're the ambassadors so it's socially awkward. This was a part many star trek fans didn't get because it had to deal with social interaction.
@jarvisel Because it's a tense scene. Sarek is being dismissive toward Spock, implying Spock's looked down on -- racism, maybe? Then Sarek has a human wife, so it's not that -- WTF, then? -- and then the big reveal that Sarek is Spock's father.
@kittykatBflat I saw the 2009 movie. I'm not asking why Sarek gave Spock the could shoulder. I'm saying, from Kirk's perspective, he was probably wondering why. Unless there was some other conversation that Spock had had with Kirk explaining the tension between Spock and Sarek, we cannot assume that Kirk was aware of the estrangement.
@kenadler basically what I was trying to say is I think their relationship is all tense because Spock went into Starfleet instead of the Science Acadamey and dissapointed Sarek thats all. Cook your jets. ts'all good.
@jarvisel It's because his dad was all like 'no, dude, I totally don't want to be escorted by my dissapointment of a son, yo,' so the music is all like 'dude, you just pissed off Kirk for being so pissy with your own son, yo'
@jarvisel Did you know I love you? I read most of your comments and I almost died. XD Serek is a total dick to Spock in the actual series. That guy playing him in the new movie obviously learned to be more accepting after the romulans BLEW UP VULCAN.
why is everyone pure moaning about the new films storyline?? they just want to start afresh with the same characters and ideas, no harm done, they didn't ACTUALLY change time :| ahahhahah
