I regret that there isn't an I LOVE IT!!! rating b/c that is what I would have commented on this particular piece of art. Honestly, when you started out & even during this video I didn't think it would be anything I would like at all. However, the layers giving the texture, the colors esp. the rust one were a nice surprise. It was a lovely cohesive piece of artwork--beautiful too! Thank you for teaching us so many wonderful techniques & for showing us such unique pieces of art.
Hallo Carla, groetjes uit Nuenen. I absolutely love your work, your spirit, the way you so generously allow us to watch over your shoulder, and the wonderful music. You inspire me. Thanks
It's gorgeous! I'm a digital collage artist mostly and you've inspired me to try and see of I can achieve something digitally. If I succeed, I'll call it "Homage to Carla's Cat.. :)
Lovely texture carla. We had a girl at college who used the same canvasses over and over again. The teachers bemoaned this but I always thought she got some great textures and surfaces.
Yeah, a friend of us (he is a painter too) does it when he has no money to buy new canvas. Sometimes I bemoan that, because sometimes he use very nice paintings because his need to paint is so urgent. But that is not the same as my journey, I didn't used a finished canvas like he did.
After your reply to Gary about using your blow-drier, I am wondering if someone uses a real heat gun maybe the bubbles in bitumen would be a nice texture?
Really nice to see your process. I usually thin the bitumen down first before i apply it as it is too thick straight out of the tin. i find it works better as a layer if it is thin. But so glad you tried it and i really like the results. Layers upon layers...beautiful texture and colour combinations:)
I thin the bitumen with white spirit before I used it. Just as thick as ordinary yoghurt. Or should it more like ehh.. coffee?
Klaas and I discussed it and we think the problem is the heat, because I haven't a real heat gun, but I use a blow-drier, so it didn't start to bubble ;)
An excellent lesson in perseverance and creativity, turning a negative into something quite wonderful. Mistakes and poor choices almost always lead to happy results if given a chance.
"Perseverance", I did need a dictionary to understand this word :)
It sounds (in my language) as something that isn't real big fun, is that correct? But I do have fun, I'm curious. And if it doesn't work out the way I like it, I've learned something new. I love the journey of discover and doing it.
I am so impressed with how you didn't like how one result turned out, but you just kept going! And good thing you did, because the end result is really beautiful! I am always tempted to discard something that doesn't go right for me. Thank you for showing me that a "mistake" can turn out quite amazing! I love it!
I think: there is allways the possibility of a layer of gesso to start it all over again. And if that isn't possible for one reason, there is only 1 canvas lost (but it never happens untill now, I did always use them again :)
It's just playing around and discover what happens, I like that very much.
And what is very important for me, is that I feel good when painting. If the result is good too, great, that's a bonus (extra charge?), do you understand? :)
I am so glad that i watched the whole video, what a wonderful piece, interesting technic!
Great soundtrack :)

I have actually used "failed" paintings over again. Often, the texture from the old painting works better in the new painting.
What is bitumen called in the U.S.? I see it used a lot by artists in the UK.
JudiG 3 years ago
Bitumen in the U.S.A is called asphalt, which is a petroleum product.

Perseverance: Sticking to a purpose or aim; never giving up what one has set out to do.
And, thank goodness, you can have perseverance and fun at the same time. :-) I also love the journey of discovery. Thanks for the very good example!
