That is a nice painted and restored dozer. I have seen the International Paper guys start up road graders that way years ago during the 1960's. I would go out and look at them parked on our land and try to figure out how to start them myself. The last Caterpillar dozer I was on worked like a charm and was so easy to drive. I used it to level soil for a church foundation and that D-6 was a work horse.
nice cat we hav one very sinilar to ours it was the first one on my familys farm we still hav it i am 17 an that was the first tractor i ever drove we call are a tractor i can remember when i was five i would pull the logs in with after grandpa cut them down it now sits in the barn hasnt been ran since 1995 but ican tell u it still turns
thanks, my friend has a larger version, I don't know if its a cat, but i believe its from the 40's and it utilizes a pup motor as well. Very interesting post. Anyone know about the hit-and miss motors here on utube? I am not sure how they work as far as the combustion process, and posts that explain how they work would be greatly appreciated. thanks again.
Hey! My Dad owned one of these. He used it to log trees in the winter. Had the pony motor and he used a shot of ether to aid in starting. I think it had about 5 or 6 speed trans. I can still remember the smell of it. All Cats smelled the same. Was a very good machine and I remember Dad sold it at his farm auction. Thanks for the memories!!!!
Hi, a Pony Motor is a lower powered petrol (gasoline) powered engine used to start the main diesel powered engine. The Pony is traditionally started using a pull cord as demonstrated in this video. The pull cord needs to be manually wound on to the fly wheel each time you attempt to start the Pony. If you want to keep the Bully authentic the Pony is retained but some people replace them with electric starters as per the post previous to yours. Hope that helps.
Nice tractor. My grandad and I fixed up his old D2.And a guy in my town has one for sale all painted and restored, it just needs a mag for the pony engine ,you have any idea where I could find one?
We have a late 40's Cat D2. It came with the pony motor. Let me tell yeah, it would take a good hour to get the actual diesel engine going, the frickign pony motor crap would take forever, then you would have to mess with the clutch to start up the CAT. We ended up putting on a big ole 12volt starter on it, and got rid of the pony motor. Let me tell ya, you hit the starter, spray in some ether, and away it goes. Then you can shut it down, and be able to start it back up with a touch of a button
One of the best parts of these old diesel dogs is the lack of a battery. Pull the rope and hope for the best that the pony motor starts. Very well done, thank you for your video and for the time invested to restore this old workhorse!
