The Kodac Z5 is a great little camera that you can take everywhere. I have it and the Panasonic HXDC1(similar price range). Panasonic takes better quality video imo, but the Z5 is smaller and more durable. I posted some footage of the Panasonic, and will be posting some Z5 footage soon.
@HC32KING I used the flip ultra to shoot the music video on my page. Nothing spectacular but people swore it wasn't the flip. Check out the video that comes on. Some of the camera matters, but it a lot of the editing. These days with After Effects/Premiere, etc. A flip will get you far
with this 2 about the same playsport looks better in daylight but is preety bad with night vision while flip hd doesent have priblem with night vision

The white balance is off in the Kodak most of the time so that explains the "blue". Idk if that's adjustable. Also exposure indoors doesn't do a good job for the Kodak. All in all this is a dumb comparison because all we're comparing is the camcorders' auto detect features and not actually "quality". A low light test can probably be the best comparison to tell you which camcorder succeeds.
although I noticed Flip Ultra's videos as I am watching this is little bright..I mean it catches the scene in brighther mode than Kodak's..but Kodak is more HD i think video quality wise

The video doesnt flow smoothly at all with this camera! If I am doing something wrong them please tell me but when i fimed in 1080 the video does not keep up with the sound and is not smooth AT ALL! I have it in 1080p and it plays ok on the recorder but not when on computer with any video player! You drove a car and the scenery moved by quick but with mine all i did was pan around the outside real slow but it doesnt play back like i recorded it! help me out please!
@panjok2 Many older computers aren't powerful enough to play HD video smoothly, especially 1080p. I picked up a refurbished Dell Latitude 620D laptop for $220 a while back. It's able to play 1080p videos perfectly, even without a dedicated graphics card.
@madacomachine kodak playsport is the camera I have and if this is in response to my comment about it not playing smoothly I already found out the problem. My computer was working in overload so it wouldnt play the video smoothly at the time but now all is ok! I love the playsport now!
I received one of these at a kings of leon video shoot because i was a fan and they had 40 of us fans come to the making of the video and stand in as extras and they wanted us to film our view of the shoot so they could use it in the second video which was the making of the back down south video! I have one BIG problem with the recorder! When I ilmed in 1080p the video is un-watchable because it is not smooth at all! when u watch u hear the sounds but the video doesn't keep up with the sounds
@panjok2 Hey, could it be that your computer is not powerful enough to play back 1080p smoothly since it takes alot of processing power to play back high resolution HD videos. Have you tried connecting the Playsport to your TV which HDMI or whatever it has and testing it on there?

i had Flip Ultra HD gen2 for 2 year last month, i was satisfied with it.
this month i traded it in, got Kodak Zx3. it seems to be better, it has 1080p and 720p 60fps. it can also take pictures. but watching this vid, the only thing i dont like about the kodak is the light exposure at night. i wonder if i can turn off the light sensitivity..
Why do I always buy stuff and THEN watch reviews on it? :) LOL... Anyway, looks like I made a good choice, I do have the Kodak Play Sport, and its awesome. The low light isnt the greatest (made for outdoor use so..) and no macro. I came to the exact same conclusions, but for only 130 bucks at Wal-mart...and its can go underwater 10 feet?!? You cant beat it. Its the best camera all around out there right now.
@tijsnl the video quality is very similar but the zi8 has macro focus and an external mic plugin. The playsport is waterproof (yes it really is I've tried it) but you lose the macro focus and external mic plug. Either is a great choice.

Sweet, I've used it nearly every day for 3 weeks now and I'm pretty pleased. I did however buy the little macro lens you can find online. I needed a slightly wider angle when in my helmet.

@alrightproductions11 Yeah, thats what I did too... by adding $700 to my budget. Its obviously in another market. My 550D is great for adjusting focus, aperture and shutter speed, but I cant run with it or handle it with one hand, neither take it underwater.
@omgtkseth Well you already have a 550D so it's a moot point. For a potential buyer in the market for a pocket camcorder, than the Kodak ZX5 is the camera for them, not a DSLR with video function. The DSLR world is, and will always be about still photography. The video function is handy, and that's it. Noting will beat a dedicated video camera for filming. Just like nothing will beat a DLSR for shooting stills. My point? Buy a dedicated product for what you need, it will do it very well.
When I hook my playsport up to the T.V. with the cable connector to watch the recorded video, theres a time meter on the top of T.V. screen above the video. Is there a way to remove that? Thanks.
Kodak software auto loads when you first plug the PlaySport into your computer. It takes a bit of getting used to. Movies are created in .MOV format. The software will convert it to .AVI so it CAN be used in Windows Movie Maker. The file conversion is slow unless you have a newer, faster computer. At first I hated the Kodak software, but now I dig it. Very easy to use, puts together very viewable movies fast and easily. Finalizing the movies is slow but overall it's very acceptable.
@BlogsbytheDay I can't specifically answer that, i.e. I don't really know if it compresses for utube. I've uploaded movies to utube with no problem. I primarily use vimeo now and there is no problem at all. The mov to avi conversion is actually done in the software. I also use wmm primarily now which is glitchy but free and full of basic features that allow for decent movie editing and production.
Great review and comparison. I've been doing lots of research on the PlaySport and my conclusion is that it is primarily an OUTDOOR camera. (Duh. PlaySPORT, like sports mostly done outside.) Your review and comp really confirmed that for me. I've got one I'm using now on a trial basis. I shoot mostly outdoors, in the surf of people surfing. The camera doesn't do well in low light early mornings or late evening. Still and video images are soft and grainy. But in brighter light it is tops. Thx

I'm returning my Flip tomorrow so I can enjoy the higher (and more appreciated) versatility of the Playsport. The Flip may work better in some instances, but if this video is accurate, I'm certain the Playsport will serve me much better.

kodak doesnt shot in 1080p, it does 1080i (interlaced). its like 720p boost. there is no way kodak will put a high quality 1080p cmos sensor in this little cam. the kodak has poor quality in 1080 setting, you have to use the 720 setting. the big feature of the kodak is its waterproofing. these cams has advanages and disadvanages but i think the flip is ez simple and it uses .mp4 unlike kodaks outdated .mov
As I can see the Kodak is much better outdoors than indoors. I am glad I got a Kodak Playsport yesterday. You could just setup some lighting indoors and you will have an amazing result as well. I just uploaded a 1080 HD video to my youtube channel using the playsport and it looks pretty amazing when you watch it at 1080HD. I wish it was sunny today so I could do some recording outside but I will upload other video to my channel soon. Thanks Kodak for this great and inexpensive camera!!! =)
Low light for the Kodak is a challenge (u can compensate w/ video-edit software though). Outdoors or in good light: Kodak blows the Flip away. But, you can't use the Flip under water or in the rain, etc.
I bought he flip. and went to BB to compare Flip with Playsport. Decided to return the Flip and purchase the Playsport. I hope that the low light ratings are not an issue for me. If in the house... guess just turn on more lights! The apples to apples comparisons of both Flip & Playsport, My observations : Playsport wins. If Kodak could only improve the low light situation I think they may have an almost perfect mini cam!
Before I saw this video I thought the Flip looked better as far as quality. The Playsport is waterproof and is just cool looking overall, plus the Playsport is alot cheaper compared to others. Lowlight is the only dis-advantage.
i think on the blue sky part the flip ultra hd gets just for that point, but for over all useage and the fact you can upgrade the momory to 32gb sdhc card the playsport wins it for me
kodak looks a lot better, didnt do as good indoor, but every other situation the contrast and fram rate looked superior. I have the kodak playsport now, this video helped me make my decision. I use it for outdoors mainly anyway, climbing mountains is my main use for it and that includes the possibility of it being out in rain and snow so kodak is better for that respect too.
I think the Kodak is better. One thing I noticed was the Flip was very shaky. Then again the Kodak also makes the sky seem more white then it is. I am going to get the Playsport.
How big is your memory card? How much video fits on memory card (I know it depends on video quality, but tell me what you've experienced)? How long does the battery last? Thanks!

From what I've seen, the Flip washes most scenes out, and that's only kinda helpful in low light situations.

I'm returning my Flip tomorrow so I can enjoy the higher (and more appreciated) versatility of the Playsport. The Flip may work better in some instances, but if this video is accurate, I'm certain the Playsport will serve me much better.

Kodak Playsport is amazing i jsut got it. it can handle alot fo things even being roughhandeld and it has alot better low lighting :)

kodak doesnt shot in 1080p, it does 1080i (interlaced). its like 720p boost. there is no way kodak will put a high quality 1080p cmos sensor in this little cam. the kodak has poor quality in 1080 setting, you have to use the 720 setting. the big feature of the kodak is its waterproofing. these cams has advanages and disadvanages but i think the flip is ez simple and it uses .mp4 unlike kodaks outdated .mov

As I can see the Kodak is much better outdoors than indoors. I am glad I got a Kodak Playsport yesterday. You could just setup some lighting indoors and you will have an amazing result as well. I just uploaded a 1080 HD video to my youtube channel using the playsport and it looks pretty amazing when you watch it at 1080HD. I wish it was sunny today so I could do some recording outside but I will upload other video to my channel soon. Thanks Kodak for this great and inexpensive camera!!! =)

Split screen comparison is great.
Low light for the Kodak is a challenge (u can compensate w/ video-edit software though). Outdoors or in good light: Kodak blows the Flip away. But, you can't use the Flip under water or in the rain, etc.

I bought he flip. and went to BB to compare Flip with Playsport. Decided to return the Flip and purchase the Playsport. I hope that the low light ratings are not an issue for me. If in the house... guess just turn on more lights! The apples to apples comparisons of both Flip & Playsport, My observations : Playsport wins. If Kodak could only improve the low light situation I think they may have an almost perfect mini cam!

Before I saw this video I thought the Flip looked better as far as quality. The Playsport is waterproof and is just cool looking overall, plus the Playsport is alot cheaper compared to others. Lowlight is the only dis-advantage.

i think on the blue sky part the flip ultra hd gets just for that point, but for over all useage and the fact you can upgrade the momory to 32gb sdhc card the playsport wins it for me

kodak looks a lot better, didnt do as good indoor, but every other situation the contrast and fram rate looked superior. I have the kodak playsport now, this video helped me make my decision. I use it for outdoors mainly anyway, climbing mountains is my main use for it and that includes the possibility of it being out in rain and snow so kodak is better for that respect too.

I think the Kodak is better. One thing I noticed was the Flip was very shaky. Then again the Kodak also makes the sky seem more white then it is. I am going to get the Playsport.
