  • The problem here is the oh so pretty piano arrangement. The song should be really sarcastic and angry - and the accompaniment should match; fast and harsh not happy & charming. perhaps actors this age would be better off singing something more straightforward without a complex subtext; the lyrics here are the reverse of the message - from an old timer Broadway musician. PS. To both performers; you sing well! This is difficult material. Keep at it! Most of us totally get what you were doing.

  • @laboltt that having been said - the pianist is amazing - wonderful tone and musicality -just the wrong approach for this piece completely!

  • At 9 years old a boy befriended a girl in 4th grade. They walked home together, played together daily, and bonded closely. Both were the romantic type. Finally one day the boy came to her house. Her father came out. "Betty can't play with you anymore. " Later Betty told the boy it was because "We're Polish and you're Jewish". Her father broke both our hearts. I was the Jewish boy. I don't hate her father, because he was doing only what he was taught.

  • just heartbreaking. did you ever try to find her? i would if i were you. that's not fair. love is love. if someone is lucky enough to find, then BRAVO! but to cut someone out because of something they had no control over?! you didn't choose to be Jewish, that was your heritage. she didn't choose to be Polish, that was her heritage. i just don't understand why human beings don't learn from the past, they just repeat it over & over. my heart goes out to you & Betty for all of the lost years.

  • KittyKat, It happened in 1940. After Betty's father ended it, school was almost over for the summer. Her family moved and I never saw her again. At the age of nine you do what your parents say and don't question it. I had no way to find her. We grew up in the Great Depression. I had to put up with other instances of prejudice but I hung in there.

  • singboy4, we were not putting on the full show. and actually we were trying to do the opposite. in our version, lt. cable says "this is not a good way to be taught" before the song starts. the play we put on was a broadway review called "evolution revolution" promoting peace. it was trying to show people to NOT think that way.

  • did you totaly miss the point? This song is about NOT learning to hate. Are you teaching your kids this foremost or about how to be propper performers?

  • Yes this applies to kids learning how to sing and act....this is not bad but parents beware just because your kid can sing act and dance does not mean he or she is better than the other zillion of kids that can do the same
