@topdoozie1 Doc has some cool tools. I thought about buying a dial-a-charge, but it's kinda bulky. I bought the Fieldpiece wireless refrigerant scale. Heck, I own a lot of HVAC service and installation tools. The old Welch is a great jobsite conversation piece.
@PutSome5tankOnIt That's what I meant. The scale works fine, but the magnet wont hold the display. I just wish there was a way to get the(hard drive) magnet off the metal bracket without breaking it.
@HDXFH I love the ole girl. She's my first (vacuum pump). She's powerful enough to suck the chrome off a trailer hitch. The antique vac pump has received more interest than the micron gauge. Attaching a magnet to the gauge was just a matter of convenience for me.
@Nutintoitbut2doit Thanks, dude. I like the modified micron gauge set-up. I've been searching the vac pump on line and I'm not so sure it's well-suited for HVAC. It's a cool specimen, though.
I'd like to know just how low the old girl will go. Ditch the recovery cylinder and direct connect the micron gauge.
Tool cool. Another great idea. Why doesn't everything have a magnet on it? Field piece got that one right. I don't know why more manufacturers of meters don't adopt that.
@tstatech That was 5 mins of vacuum w/ 3/8" hose. The old Welch will pull 50 microns easily, even on a 50lb recovery bottle. She's a belt-driven beast. I call her The Big Black Bitch when I'm not feeling 'politically correct'.
If Yellow Jacket offered a boot/case with a magnet, I wouldn't have done the gauge mod. I'd just buy the accessory.
@ManiacalMichael504 That pump is a horse. Built to last. The pump head is twice the size of my 5CFM JB. Knocked a 15lb recovery bottle down to 650 microns in less than 5 minutes.
@dizziedallas I suspected the Welch would get more love than my micron gauge mod. Everyone gawks at it and asks where they can get one just like it! It's a tool AND a conversation piece!
OMG , WOW : Dr. Frankstein I presume !!! LOL ... (no insult intended)....
Freakin Wicked 5tank , damn that was fast !!!
You are the man , I love it !!! Did you finger smear the silicon , I have a buddy that is a IT Tech , I think I can get the mags from him (i know you said : not to be done at home) but I too can not leave well enough alone!!! ROFL,,,
Man I am digging Welch vac pump , old girl looks like she made the trip over on the Mayflower OK !!! LOL...
@fritzhvac It's a redneck upgrade and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Silicone was messy work but I'm not being graded on neatness. The Welch is probably older than me. It weighs 50+ lbs. It's too heavy to lug around as I've gotten older.
@PutSome5tankOnIt Hell brother there ain't nothin to be ashamed of,that was Fern Creek Style my brother !!! That was another one of your videos that went straight to my favorites ! NEXT LEVEL my friend !!! I can see a little jealousy gonna rear her ugly head on this one , or is that green with envy ! ROFL
I priced her at Johnstone Supply today $200.00 plus , gotta get another install under my belt first my brother ! Thank You for all your righteous tips my friend !
@mazzmari The gauge still works fine. I think the old vac is an industrial model. I didn't find much info about it online. I vacuumed my own system with it about 15 years ago and have NEVER had ref circuit problems. It's an oldie but it's a goodie!
@YankeeIngenuity The ole black mare vents directly from the second stage (yes, it's a 2-stage pump) which gives it that hollow sorta sound. Reminds of water dripping in a cave. It had already pulled 650 microns. Not much air in the recovery bottle to remove when I recorded it.
This is too cool 5tank !! That old vac pump...wow..what a treasure ! I have some old hard drives...and some meters... I am getting ideas here...Lol!!

Cool. I'm gonna upgrade my CPS scale... it's got a magnet, but it don't work worth a crap. Time to dig through the old computer junk.
FilterChanger 1 year ago
@FilterChanger It might be cheaper to adapt a neodymium magnet in place of the old one.

haha that vac pump reminds me of my dad's old air compressor he got for nothing. We used that thing until the weld in the tank broke.

@fritzhvac It's a pricey instrument. I paid $200 for mine at Johnstone, too. That's why I didn't recommend anyone do what I did to mine.

Awesome sound from that vacuum pump. Reminds me of an old hit and miss engine. Nice work on the meter too.
