  • saw her on U.S. Television...Absolutely wonderful!...I have been an electric bass player for years, but now I have ordered my first string bass....very excited!

  • I like the size of the dislike bar ^^

  • Amazing portuguese pronounciation!!!! Almost no accent and a beatiful voice!

  • aww man! I love it..instant eargasm LOL

  • Much prefer Nana Caymmi version.

The solution now is to complicate the arr. as much as possible. But Less is More for me. The Zen Garden beats any overworked Garden.

Jazz ruins a lot of simple ballads. Nascimento singing this a capella is better than this overloaded version.

  • Just uploaded a video response! Esperanza Spalding Sample!

  • ssssssssiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • Muito obrigado. She is wonderful. Her accent is perfect. When will she be performing in Brasil? Salvador mainly.

  • Nice to see someone win a Grammy that actually deserves it! So beautiful!!!!

  • She is soo fluently in brazilian portuguese that i though she was a brazilian too, just like me. O_o

  • Congratulations on your Grammy Award Esperanza!

  • funky!

  • I love her. Her voice mesmerizes me and her beauty is matchless.

  • First time I heard this melody was as a young teenager on the little outro of 'Runnin'' on the Earth Wind and Fire's 'All 'n' All' album way back in @77.

As mesmerisingly beautiful a tune now as it was then.....

  • @Groonblatt My goodness, sounded vaguely familiar, couldn't figure out why, Thanks for pointing it out. EWF of course.

  • Whoever winds up with this Musical Goddess will be one lucky S.O.B!! This lady is the total package!! All I can do is dream!!

  • I don't know what the hell she sayin but, this song is straight hittin!!!! Man this song in stuck in my head!!!

  • Sexy! Sexy! Sexy! She is Soooo SEXY! With a lovely voice to top it all off!

  • @Xman8184 --boy, you need to Wikipedia this woman - she is Soooooo much more than that. You need to find out what she did in music school, and what Pat Metheny said about her.

  • Love this! Love her! FABU!! : )

  • Arranjaço nesta música. Da Bahia a Minas Gerais e ponto final.

  • 191 Likes and 0 dislikes!!!! Yeah, you know that's right!

  • I Want Revenge! bit . ly/jerku

  • wonderful!!!

  • I'm from Brazil and I've listened many americans sing in brazilian portuguese and I want to say that it is very hard to find a foreign who speaks our language with fluency , well I don't know if she speaks brazilian portuguese but here she is perfect , flawless , seriously it is the first time I've listened an american singing brazilian portuguese with perfect accent , what got my attention here is the flow , cadence and fluency which is just as hard as the accent and she did it perfect.

  • her mom is spanish.....it s close enough...

  • @zxcasd098

OH MY GOODNESS thank god for this girl

I thought music like this was gon forever

but then ESPERANZA CAME AND SAVED THE DAY!!!!!!!

  • @zxcasd098 Ms Spalding happens to speak Spanish and Portuguese because they were spoken along with english in her home as she grew up, as they are part of her heritage from her mother and father...... Her music is GREAT!..And Portuguese and Spanish are also both music to the ear!

  • Milton Nascimento Lives!!! (he lives actually!)

Fera demais! essa mulher gives me hope! hehe (got it? hope/esperanza)

    rsrsrs

  • not sure why but she sounds much better in portuguese than english...... maybe its just me.....anyway awesome bass playing

  • @bozz21000 It sexier that's why.

  • @bozz21000 most females that speak different languages sound sexier in their native language

  • @bozz21000 because ANYTHING sounds better in Portuguese, specially in Brazilian Portuguese, the most beautiful language in the entire planet Earth.

  • Fabulous. I love the arrangement.

  • this almost brings tears to my ears just sublime

  • Wish I had a girlie like this :)

    shes so on point

  • I'm Brazilian, thus a Portuguese native speaker, but Esperanza speaks Portuguese better than me LOL awesome recreation in this Milton Nascimento's song

  • @renanmusic true! I'm portuguese and I'm amazed. Jane Monheit as well! And they got the sugar in the Brazilian perfectly! It's beautiful..

  • ¡ Me encanta esta canción!

  • @2Black2Strong1

Me too! She is so beautiful and is a great player and singer too!!!!!!!!!!

  • bela sempre bela

  • Salve Miltão!

  • This is my favorite song by Esperanza. She is so inspiring and her hair is beautiful.

  • the song is from milton nascimento.

  • anyone have the piano chords to this?

  • @nulight22 I'll try and figure it out for you. I actually did it at one point. Had it on my Macbook, but someone stole it.

  • Hi, nulight22. Try this:go to google, then write the name of the (any Barazilian) song you want and write cifras (that's "chords" in portuguese). You'll have the chords, but you'll have to do the improvisation on them.

  • What is the name of the instrument playing at the beginning? I can't remember the name to save my life.

  • its a digital drum that is played like a bongo, think its called a ddrum

  • The drum is called Udu. It is made o clay with it's origin in Nigeria. I love the sound of it!

  • That's the word. Thanks.

  • no, it's a udu.

  • @JazzyFaReal

    It's an Udu.

  • In Brasil we call it "Moringa"... Well, since the song was written by a brazilian songwritter (Milton Nascimento) I just think it is relevant...

    :P

  • what are the words in english?

  • @nulight22

It's about the demise of the railroads in Brazil because the military junta decided they wanted to encourage everyone to drive cars and also to bring auto manufactures into the country. But to Brazilians it's a nostalgia of the "olden" times. Ponta De Ariea was were the railroad on the coast started and where many people came into Brazil. It's not as romantic as it sounds but has a romantic feeling for many Brazilians.

  • @JazzyFaReal sound like an udu

  • @Albayciro

    udu, i agree...

  • @JazzyFaReal it's called UduDrum

  • @JazzyFaReal the sound is called an udu drum....

  • @JazzyFaReal Really? It sounded closer to tablas to me, or at least artificial sounding ones.

  • @JazzyFaReal---- Is it not an Indian Tabla ? ? ?

  • @JazzyFaReal I believe that it's an Udu Drum.

  • @JazzyFaReal Is is an udu drum. Not electronic. Handmade clay instrument.

  • @JazzyFaReal It's an African instrument called the Udu.

  • An Udu

  • @HuggumsMcgehee

    I believe its an Udu.

  • @HuggumsMcgehee naaa is the "UDU"

  • @HuggumsMcgehee udu drum I tried a cover of this song, you can see what it looks/sounds like on my page

  • @HuggumsMcgehee It's supposed to sound like tablas.

  • @TaterGumfries No. It's an udu. I just couldn't remember the name. I've heard both. It's an udu.

  • @HuggumsMcgehee i thought it was a Tabla, but sound kind of different yet similar

  • @koojean They can sound similar. Look it up on youtube. I'm sure there's a video. Listen to them back to back. It's really not that hard to tell.

  • @HuggumsMcgehee Think it´s a moringa.

  • @MaranhaBatera Yeah. It's probably that. Didn't know about that instrument, but they and the udu seem to be based on the same concept.

  • @HuggumsMcgehee it's udu drum!

  • @thenapoleone Or a moringa. Probably a moringa.

  • @HuggumsMcgehee no! it's an udu drum. The udu is an African drum. Actually being a water jug with an additional hole, it was played by women for ceremonial uses. Usually the udu is made of clay. The instrument is played by hand and produces a special and unique bass sound by quickly hitting the big hole. Furthermore the whole corpus can be played by fingers. Today it is widely used by percussionists in different music styles.

  • @thenapoleone A moringa is a similar instrument. An udu sounds lower pitched than this. We already figured this out everyone lol. It might be an udu though.

  • @HuggumsMcgehee It sounds like either an African Water Drum, or a 'tabla?' which I think is an Indian instrument. I hope that helps if you're still looking a year later

  • @jpandtheSupercats It's not a tabla. We already figured it out. It's a udu or moringa. Sounds more like a moringa. lol

  • @HuggumsMcgehee tabula

  • @HuggumsMcgehee It's a tabla. Hindu's drum.

  • this song is so beautiful...it gives me chills when I hear the opening

  • Esperanza such an inspiration! I love the feel of this track, thanks for posting...

  • Doesnt it mean Bridge of Areia.

Because in French bridge is Pont, like Pont Neuf.

  • Ponta = cape, point (of land)

    Ponte = bridge

Then "Ponta de Areia" ~~ Sand Cape - a name of small town there in Bahia State where the railway ended until they closed it.

  • I own this CD. I love it.

  • What language is she singing in? I so love her voice and music!!!!!

  • she's speakin Portuguese... and trust me on that one... I speak it every day, I am from Portugal!

She's speakin Brazilian english, however. It's a little different, kind of the same think with the american english versus british english...

    Peace

  • Thank you!!!

  • u welcome brotha

and keep listenin to good music!

    Peace

  • oh, and I meant brazilian PORTUGUESE. not brazilian english... lol... my bad!

  • I'm a lady...but it's cool!!! I just like to stay away from radio music!!!

  • Brazilian English? WTF is that? She's singing in Portuguese. There's no Brazilian anything language. We speak Portuguese. Yes, a bit different from Portugal, but still Portuguese.

  • Brazilian PORTUGUESE. Eu escrevi Brazilian English porque me enganei, estava a escrever rápido e sem prestar atenção... acontece.

    Paz

Milton Nascimento is the singer and composer, from Brasil.

  • Thank you Carolglauco!!!! looking that up now!!!

    Great musician...

    Simply amazing...

  • que som é esse!! ela é demais!

  • muitíssimo bommmmm!!!

    Ela é a melhor!!!

  • Can someone tell me what it means... I know the title means sand edge.. ??

    lyrics? tanx

  • Rough translation: Ponta de Areia ('Sand Edge') Last stop Of the Bahia-Minas Natural road That linked Minas (Minas Gerais, a Brazilian State) To the harbor, to the sea An order was issued To pull out the railway tracks. Old locomotive engineer With his cap Remembers the cheerful people with welcome greetings. Smoky Mary (Brazilian way to refer to old trains) No longer sings to girls, flowers, windows and backyards. In the empty square A cry, a moan Forgotten houses Widows at the front door.
  • @luizcadu Hey Luiz Thanks for this translation. Indeed a pretty sounding language, but then what's it about? And this is more than just "your lips are sweet" (nothin wrong with that of course)

  • @vexedboy It's a sad and poetical portrait of a small town or village that once was prosperous and joyful because it was the final stop of a railroad track. The track linked the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais and Bahia, so the town was an important commercial spot. The tracks were removed (maybe by the govt., or a company) and the town was left to oblivion. Some they say it's a true story, I can't tell for sure!

    Cheers!

  • ***piccolo capolavoro***

  • Em bom português de Minas Gerais: ah nem...!

  • CARALHO!!! Puta som!!

  • Maravilhosa cantora e baixista...e ainda por cima uma gata.

  • delicia! não tem outra palavra!

  • I'm totally captivated. It's like audio honey.

    Amazing. Simply amazing.

  • super great!!!!!

  • Grande som!!

    Maravilhoso!

  • First her of her on KJAZZ's latin jazz show with Jose Riso. Absolutely beautiful, extremely talented young woman. I mean, WOW...

  • OMGosh! I'm in love! I've heard ABOUT her but this is the first time I've heard her properly..wow!

    Simpática, Linda, Toca muito

  • I'd like to meet her mother. She speaks highly of this woman. I'd shake her hand and give her a big hug for bringing this astounding gift into the world. She got it right as a parent even though they didn't have the financial resources. I love the bassline in this song!

  • young woman on the BIG Bass! absolutely Fabulous; a sound like a gentle breeze in autum, that bears a storm deep inside;

  • I have this album and its great. I listen it almost everyday. She's so talented.

  • Spalding has an exceptional talent. With her musical talents and amazing voice, she'll have a long lasting career in the music industry. She may not ever be popular in mainstream music or the pop music industry, but to true fans of high-quality music, she'll forever be one of our music gems. Keep it coming Esperanza!

  • Linda, linda linda!!!!!

    Até parece brasileira!!!!!

  • She is amazing. Her beauty permeates throughout her entire being. Its so nice that in 2008 music is still being created like this.

  • Language is a Gift given to us by the Universe. Feelings and emotions can be expressed in a thousand languages. They all sound amazing to me. Esperanza knows this and so do I. You should learn a few. Then this stupid Nationalism will become irrelevant to you as it is to us.

  • Tô amandando o som dessa Menina! E ela tbm... rss

  • This song is originally by the wonderful and one of the most singers and songwriters of the world, his name is Milton Nascimento and this song was sung by him and amamzing Elis Regina too...

  • The Wayne Shorter album "Native Dancer", with Milton Nascimento is probably one of my all time favorite albums.

His voice can melt stone. My new wife and I would dance to his music. Such wonderful sexy music for such a wonderful sexy time of our lives.

  • Congratulations to you...so nice to hear of love stories in progress :-)

  • I first heard this song a couple years back on "Native Dancer" (Wayner Shorter) and didn't really think much of it then. Now I realize how beautiful the song is. Thank you Esperanza.

  • Yeah, just downloaded that version from wayne shorter too. But I first heard this song when i was a child, from Earth, wind and fire's "thats the ways of the world album"

  • BEAUTIFUL SOUL! I LOVE HER!

  • man that bassline is wicked. this woman is jazz at its finest.

  • She's amazing. Damn, how its good when "easy listening" sounds so intrincate and smart, as also cool. Great moods, great voice!

  • She is amazing indeed...!!! All the best to her, a true artist!

  • Completely agree with you MaggieHG, a complete and PURE artist.

    Thanks JazzyFaReal!

  • The Best is that she can speak portuguese ;X

  • A song says "Spanish is the loving tongue." I beg to differ, it is Portuguese that is the loving tongue.

  • wow she is superfantastic

  • yeah, i agree! When i first heard her, i hell in love right after 30 seconds of her sampled music.
