First time I heard this melody was as a young teenager on the little outro of 'Runnin'' on the Earth Wind and Fire's 'All 'n' All' album way back in @77.
As mesmerisingly beautiful a tune now as it was then.....
@Xman8184 --boy, you need to Wikipedia this woman - she is Soooooo much more than that. You need to find out what she did in music school, and what Pat Metheny said about her.
I'm from Brazil and I've listened many americans sing in brazilian portuguese and I want to say that it is very hard to find a foreign who speaks our language with fluency , well I don't know if she speaks brazilian portuguese but here she is perfect , flawless , seriously it is the first time I've listened an american singing brazilian portuguese with perfect accent , what got my attention here is the flow , cadence and fluency which is just as hard as the accent and she did it perfect.
@zxcasd098 Ms Spalding happens to speak Spanish and Portuguese because they were spoken along with english in her home as she grew up, as they are part of her heritage from her mother and father...... Her music is GREAT!..And Portuguese and Spanish are also both music to the ear!
I'm Brazilian, thus a Portuguese native speaker, but Esperanza speaks Portuguese better than me LOL awesome recreation in this Milton Nascimento's song
Hi, nulight22. Try this:go to google, then write the name of the (any Barazilian) song you want and write cifras (that's "chords" in portuguese). You'll have the chords, but you'll have to do the improvisation on them.
It's about the demise of the railroads in Brazil because the military junta decided they wanted to encourage everyone to drive cars and also to bring auto manufactures into the country. But to Brazilians it's a nostalgia of the "olden" times. Ponta De Ariea was were the railroad on the coast started and where many people came into Brazil. It's not as romantic as it sounds but has a romantic feeling for many Brazilians.
@HuggumsMcgehee no! it's an udu drum. The udu is an African drum. Actually being a water jug with an additional hole, it was played by women for ceremonial uses. Usually the udu is made of clay. The instrument is played by hand and produces a special and unique bass sound by quickly hitting the big hole. Furthermore the whole corpus can be played by fingers. Today it is widely used by percussionists in different music styles.
@thenapoleone A moringa is a similar instrument. An udu sounds lower pitched than this. We already figured this out everyone lol. It might be an udu though.
@HuggumsMcgehee It sounds like either an African Water Drum, or a 'tabla?' which I think is an Indian instrument. I hope that helps if you're still looking a year later

Rough translation: Ponta de Areia ('Sand Edge') Last stop Of the Bahia-Minas Natural road That linked Minas (Minas Gerais, a Brazilian State) To the harbor, to the sea An order was issued To pull out the railway tracks. Old locomotive engineer With his cap Remembers the cheerful people with welcome greetings. Smoky Mary (Brazilian way to refer to old trains) No longer sings to girls, flowers, windows and backyards. In the empty square A cry, a moan Forgotten houses Widows at the front door.
@luizcadu Hey Luiz Thanks for this translation. Indeed a pretty sounding language, but then what's it about? And this is more than just "your lips are sweet" (nothin wrong with that of course)
@vexedboy It's a sad and poetical portrait of a small town or village that once was prosperous and joyful because it was the final stop of a railroad track. The track linked the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais and Bahia, so the town was an important commercial spot. The tracks were removed (maybe by the govt., or a company) and the town was left to oblivion. Some they say it's a true story, I can't tell for sure!
I saw her in concert yesterday (5/14/09) in Norfolk, Virginia. She is an awesome performer and her version of Ponta de Areia performed during this show was outstanding.
I'd like to meet her mother. She speaks highly of this woman. I'd shake her hand and give her a big hug for bringing this astounding gift into the world. She got it right as a parent even though they didn't have the financial resources. I love the bassline in this song!

Much prefer Nana Caymmi version.
The solution now is to complicate the arr. as much as possible. But Less is More for me. The Zen Garden beats any overworked Garden.
Jazz ruins a lot of simple ballads. Nascimento singing this a capella is better than this overloaded version.
