Did you know that the US Government pays farmers to grow different crops such as Corn,Pumpkins, Cauliflower,etc and then NOT harvest them? that is ridiculous think of all the food wasted...I have seen miles of fields growing that are later plowed over and burned for some reason and the farmers are paid to do this!

what about all the commodities that are trashed every year (gov-subsidies). Food is subsidized every year to keep the prices down, and food is literally thrown away (since roosevelt i think). I agree that "should" be a very good investment, but this market system is pretty drenched in manipulation and it could go pretty much anywhere. Hardly any value in todays market represents reality. Investments are pretty much left up to individual circumstances these days.
Would we be throwing away this subsidized food if we didn't have foreign food imports? If Peter Schiff is right and China is going to start cutting off exports to the US, it seems like the food trash commodities would become more valuable.
I'm not sure how raising the prices of food to match other products will work. Raising prices might have the effect that people will have to work harder to get less food. To get a hamburger, a lumberjack migh have to cut down two trees instead of one. I'll have to think about this one.
