Thanks for the videos! I just posted a video showing my alcohol stove in use while camping. Your videos were very helpful while I was making mine! I appreciate it!
@Zantaer you can use meths too, i tried petrol once. bad idea dont do it. flames where about 1 foot high. it was proberly producing thrust and it sounded like a jet. took me 10min to put it out with sand
@themarkfellows2 It depends on the ambient temp and your altitude. If I fill mine up halfway (2oz of fuel maybe), it will run for around 15 minutes, which is more than enough to boil water.
been watchin vids bout alchahol stoves d last 3-4 hrs(ya im stoned, again),and must say really enjoyed this,u thought me sum basics dat most tubers forget 2 tell bout basic stuff dat most tubers forget 2 say like wat the other videos dont talk bout, btw i kno your stoned :)
Aslo, be careful not to let an aluminum pot/pan be heated while empty. The extreme heat will break down the toxic teflon coating and aluminum and it will be absorbed into your food.
I know it's debatable how harmful this stuff is so you can decide how much you want to consume ;p
It's my understanding that all alcohol is toxic to some degree. The same goes for aluminum and teflon (materials in the pot and coating). The debate is that each of us might die of old age before the toxins reach an unsafe level in our system.
It's great to have a lid on the pot when possible to reduce the possible toxic fumes from getting in your food/drink.
91% rubbing alcohal will work but it is toxic. Rubbing alcohal is a petrochemical. Denatured alcohal much cheaper than HEET but comes in quart, half gallon or gallon size that may be to heavy for a loaded down backpacker.
I used rubbing alcohol in the one I just made...it does alright if you get the 91%. It's not the nice, clean blue flame though. Denatured alcohol or heet would be best. I have a little heat here, I'll try it next.
Also DONT USE RED HEET, or so I'm told. I hear it makes your eyebrows disappear.
@howtodoitexpert No, there's nothing toxic, it doesn't burn as well because it is diluted with water. HEET (yellow bottle) is cheaper anyway. But, if it is an emergency situation and you only have rubbing alcohol to use as fuel, you can use it with no major issue, as long as it's 91% or higher, otherwise there's too much water to really get a good flame.
Please link the instructions to this one, its different from the classic "Penny" stove. How do you make the part you put the fluid in that you light first?
@benjiiiiuk1 you have to heat the stove first so the alcohol vapor goes out the holes and lites and as the jets stay lite they keep the can hot and that keeps making vapor witch means it burns all the fuel, so like heat the stove or put some alcohol by the stove on cement and lite that and i will heat the stove
it works but it creates TONS of soot onto the pot if ur boiling water but if u just watch it, itll be pretty clean trust me, i know from experience i made 1 b4
These are my favorite types of alcohol stoves. Im glad to see someone else using them. If you mess around with different designs, you can boil water fast! Mine will boil 2 cups in under a minute most of the time, using denatured alcohol (smells). distance from the flame is important, as it needs space to super heat the air. It fits in the cup, with the wind screen/potstand. super light and totally disposable. I lost a new stove at an airport once, assholes. It didn't even have fuel.
You can use a really high proof hard liquor but it must be over 90% or something. I always have a bottle of everclear in the house for various reasons and this is one of them.
The recommended fuel is denatured alcohol, although ethyl and methyl work fine. Do not use Isopropyl. You might as well boil the water by looking at it.
Not true, I've gotten Isopropyl alcohol to boil about 1.5 cups of water in under 5mins.
was 70% alcohol and I used a pressurized stove, or a penny stove. It works it just takes longer to get it primed. and it leave whatever they mix with the alcohol behind.
I AM CURIOUS IF THIS WAS HYDROGEN GAS WOULD IT BURN IS THE SAME MANNER If THE TOP WAS BLOCKED
WITH JUST THE SMALL JET HOLES ON THE OUTSIDE.
????? please do not say how hydrogen has to be made just tell me anyone how you believe hydrogen would burn with such a vessel being used.. thank you for any comments on this query.
Well, hydrogen is a gas and these stoves burn liquid alcohol. The liquid heats up and vaporizes, providing gas and (in some designs) pressure needed for the burn. Hydrogen would have to be pumped in at a steady rate from another vessel. But, if you pumped hydrogen gas through small jets and ignited it, that's basically how it would burn. Just like natural gas on your kitchen stove.
my earlier stoves didn't work (im 13) and i built that stove twice with the holes on the top but then i built another one and tryed your side port idea and IT WORKED!
i just boiled water and cooked paper soup (ramen noodles) in my pot with the stove...lol
He's quite accessible these days. When he's not doing any movies, he'll do just about anything to be around a camera....including narrating a youtube vid.
just wanted to say excellent job, ive just found out about these tonight, and this is by far the best one ive seen on youtube. very nice fit and finish and very controled and even blue flames all the way round. bravo. youve inspired me to make one tomorrow ;)
Thanks! I was worried that the jets might be too big since I just punched them out with a large sewing needle, but they seem to work just fine. Google Zen Stoves and they have a bunch of templates for punching/drilling holes for the jets. The whole process only took about 30 minutes.
I myself use everclear. More expensive to burn yes, but I think the more natural everclear is more ECO friendly and non-toxic. using HEET scares me. But it loks like a good stove! i was thinking about making this design myself. Is this one your favorite? How do you like it?
Everclear is about as close to pure alcohol as you can get, haha. I personally believe HEET isn't too bad for the environment. It burns pretty cleanly and is odorless, so it shouldn't be too bad. This is my favorite design, mostly because you don't have to use a primer plate or anything to get it warmed up, you just light the pool of fuel in the center. The only thing worth mentioning is that it takes a bit longer for the stove to prime or "blossom" than a traditional penny or photon stove.
actually, HEET is methanol, but close enough. I wouldnt recomend removing the paint, because if you sanded it or something, it makes the already paper thin aluminum thinner. That makes it weaker in the longrun.
It's exactly the same thing. On the bottle it actually says Methyl Alcohol, that's the reason why I said methyl alcohol instead of methanol, to save confusion for those who are unfamiliar with HEET. It's also known as carbinol, wood alcohol, wood naphtha or wood spirits.
Yeah, I made another one a year or so ago that was a simple "penny stove" design, but I decided to try this design for something new. I'm actually making another penny stove that will have the jets around the top and jb weld it into the bottom of a water chestnut can with holes punched and/or drilled in the side for vents. I needed something that would act as a support and I needed a windscreen, so that'll kill two birds with one stone. I'll have a video of that design up soon.
