It stands quite clearly written with SoulSilver/HeartGold and they the berbesserte versions are from the old edition which GameFreak themselves wrote publicly, the gold and Silver incredibly many mistakes had. Instead of legendary cats, it stood faulty, legendary dogs.

The GS manual called them dogs, and no other word has ever been used to describe them in the games. They're just called by their names, now.
