  • info a bit out. Made a bit before 1982. at a guess 1930s.But still worth a watch if you like the old black and white movies. Must have been a top movie in its time.

  • there has to be something more....this isn't free? I don't understand why it's just playing!

  • watching this movie is so confusing because first time i saw this was the tium burton musical

  • gooooooooodمشكور

  • whattt??? the dude's name is Tod Slaughter? talkin' about Irony

  • Am I the only one who notice that all of the info on this is entirely wrong? It has all of the info for the musical in 82 instead of the 1936 info for this movie.

  • tobias like TOBI you moron !!!

  • Ironic. Tod Slaughter! LOL

  • AWW tobi looks so cute ina dress :)

  • Tobias Snape?! Severus Snape's father?!

  • An advertisement every ten minutes? Whaaaaaat?

  • :/

  • 23 people need a shave...

  • he did not kill people for their money directly

  • Somehow this is more frightening than the newer one.

  • errrrr aaaa isnt it a bit weird that sweeny's name is tod slaughter.... I think its a good start, in its time, it would've been the best movie out!

  • i know it is no where near as good as tim burtons film, but its a good start.

  • thats not jonny deep

  • @xxleopardwolfxx No shit. This is definitely not the 2007 release... not sure if you noticed. ;)

  • jesus i havnt seen this for years,i remember channel 4 showing todd slaughter movies about 15 years ago but havnt seen this since lol

  • In his top hat, Slaughter looks a bit like Bela Lugosi in Dracula

  • 21 people don't know a good movie when they see it.

  • movies better :P

  • and yes, there is music to this video. i've seen this particular movie before. kinda cheesy but that's what u get with older movies too. oh well, still good though.

  • lol at slaughter, perfect name for a guy acting in a film like this one lol

  • 2011 my ass

  • Thats too good! What yr was this released? Thats my only gripe about all the great old movies on here. No one seems to put dates! I guess if thats all I got to bitch about its not a biggie! Oh an those damn ads! Down w the ads!!!

  • its not as good as the sweeney todd made by tim burton

  • WAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! NO MUSIC! I WAS SO PRAYING TOO!

  • @AnimeAndMangaObsesse

Uh, this movie is nearly 80 years old. how old do you think Sondheim is lol?

  • XD tod slughter

  • what year was this released?

  • @IDidItSidsWay 1952

  • @jaredtheavenger alright, thanx mate =)

  • I bet Tod Slaughter just got the part because of his name. The producers couldn't resist!

  • I skipped this to 2 parts where he "killed" the customers does he actually slit their throats or keep making them bang there heads. If i dont see a throat being slit soon this movie is pure bollocks.

  • @ShadowyLink No, you are just too shallow to understand it.

  • i wanna have a sweet name like todd slaughter

  • this sweeney todd is so sketcky its not even funny

  • That's impressive, it makes his own tonic and the Premises...

  • Next year, THE raiders are gonna make it to the Super Bowl, i have a feeling.

  • I use Spic and Span AND Palmolive.

  • sure is crowded in the street scene.

  • This is diffenrent from the Sweeney Todd musical.

  • @steveclips Well no shit.

  • ok usually when i watch a scary movie on youtube i check the trailer first, but i thought this was the trailer, i kept waiting and waiting till finally someone dies, then i realized this was the movie lolz i am a dumb blonde

  • Stella Rho is simply delightful as Mrs. Lovatt!

  • I HATE THE QUALITY!

  • I got 10 min into this film and it creeped the hell out of me. Not complaining but damn just sent shivers up my spine.

  • the newest sweeney todd is changed.

  • was the movie edward sisser hands a like spoof of this or something ?

  • @xoxobeautifulemo216 No just an original idea.

  • i thot toby was pirellis assistant!!!!!!

  • @Mrsweeneytodd11 Toby was Pirellis' assistant in Stephen Sondheim's version. In the original version, Tobias techinically was commited to a mental institution but this movie didn't include that.

  • how come there is no benjamin barker!!

  • where is lucy and anthony and the judge and pirelli....

  • @Mrsweeneytodd11 That man who blackmails Sweeney Todd is who Pirelli is based on. Mark would later become Anthony. Sweeney Todd himself was in a sense, Judge Turpin in this movie. Lucy was a character created by Stephen Sondheim for his own version.

  • great movie the actors are awesome specially todd

  • This film is more brutal than tim burtons version isnt it? xD in his version sweeney wants his revenge and in this version he kills them for their money... but i like all versions from this to the musical and the burton fílm :)

  • so tod slaughter to johnny depp...damn

  • "And that's why they call it the Cape of Good Hope." "Ah, and now that we passed it, I 'pose we we ain't got no hopes." LMAO. This film is quite entertaining. I shouldn't be shocked, but I am. Ty, Ampopfilms, for posting this. I don't think I would 'ave ever seen it otherwise, being as I refuse to own a telly 'n all. Thumbs up. Pip pip. Cheerio and all that good sort. ;)

  • no sir, YOU are easier ;D

  • the music at the beginning is hilariously happy for this story.

  • his name is 'tod' as in sweeney todd

  • tod acts like a peado

  • I like the way Sweeney laughs and how he talks to Toby in the beginning

    Toby is so cute!

I just read the book for this (for summer reading) and its actually fairly similar to the book.

I wonder how the story of Sweeney evolved from the book version to the musical version which is more well known (like...sending Johanna to the insane asylum, Sweeney killing for revenge rather than for money etc)

  • @FleetStreetNightmare,

Around 1970, Christopher Bond did his own version of Sweeney Todd, which Stephen Sondheim saw. Sondheim thought it would make a good musical and brought the idea to Hal Prince. Bond's version made the changes you referred to; the reason being that the original 1840s Sweeney Todd was meant for a different audience than today. The changes made were needed to make it watchable for audiences in the latter half of the 20th century. The books for Bond and Sondheim are close.

  • i like how i can watch the whole movie here. thats really convenient

they should put up BBC's version of Sweeney

  • ''So many I've polished off...'' Good one Mr Todd!

  • HAahahahahha...... Love what happened to wicked old Sweeny Todd. Hahahahah.... my, I adore that Tobias boy, such passionate portrayal. Good good... what a completely different story compared to the Burton version. nice... but that ST was weird he was, very weird... and creepy.

  • This is funny because my nickname is Sweeney and my friend Christy is Todd.

  • wow this is soooo coool

  • @EverythingMe15 look for the movie "The Body Snatcher"

  • Its interesting to see how the story, similar and different all the same, can be depicted in so many ways. The stories ( compared tot he burton version) are VERY different. Its nice to see a different take. The humor is great too XD

  • @RukiTheAnimeNinja this was the real story

  • sweeny todd slaughters, and he is played by Tod Slaughter - excellent!

  • OMG! i didnt know there was an old version! hahaha! love this movie :)

  • @MrMisfit93

I liked the Burton version, but I consider this to be just as good if not better in some aspects. It's like the original Little Shop of Horrors and Phantom of the Opera. It's not a musical and not quite as memorable, but it's still great for what it is. But I don't buy Depp as a homicidal maniac. Granted maybe that works for the film as it makes him less suspicious to people but still. But Tod Slaughter's believable if not for the name alone.

  • @MrMisfit93 i know tim burton is a genious!!!!

  • It dissapoints me that they didnt really stick to the original script and made it a musical.

  • The Burton/Depp movie was taken from this and the Broadway musical

  • Tod Slaughter was a HUGE star for a while, and made several such movies. For all its faults, in its day it was a big hit.

  • iv never seen the original only the johnny depp one i watched the johnny depp one 51 times no joke actual number

  • I bought a bunch of these movies at the penny picher...they didn't have this one, thanks.

  • I wish I had an awesome name like Tod Slaughter

  • @krimsonstorm96 I don't think that's his real name. It's too perfect. And Tod is the German word for death.

  • @krimsonstorm96 change it

  • at 7:34 funny

  • i agree. I find it kinda ironic that the actor's name is Tod Slaughter. Hahha awesome though

  • @bugbug095 that's not irony, but i'm very interested in seeing you try once more to get it right

  • @bugbug095 His real name was Norman Carter Slaughter, he adopted Tod as a stage name in 1925.

  • @bugbug095 he changed his name because he played 'sweeney todd' so often that he decided it was part of him :)

  • @bugbug095 Actually, the leading man was born Norman Carter Slaughter and assumed the stage name of Tod to remind people of his success in the Victorian melodrama on which this film is based, though I suppose his real family name is also rather ironic. I saw him donkey's years ago in the murder scene of "Maria Marten and the Red Barn" his other great success at the Lewisham Hippodrome (of fond memory). He was hammy but quite frightening.

Johnny Depp made a worthy musical version of the play.

  • @bugbug095 it's actually a coincidence, not ironic

  • I like this. :]

  • dumbass.

  • @barrowking1 ...wow...are you seriously saying that films suck just cuz there black & white?...you dont watch enough film man

  • What a stupid thing to say... You're probably one of those people who think Avatar is one of the greatest films ever and can't wait to see the Hollywood re-makes of foreign language films... I know your type...

  • Dont fall for the trolls.

Some comments are just so stupid that the best way to treat them is to ignore them, especially when they are obviously there only to irritate people for fun.

  • damn straight

  • 13:12 - 13:20 PWND

  • Sweeny Todd is bad ass....that bitch cooking people fucked up though

  • i think Johnny Depp is freaking HOT! i would loose my virginity to him. i dont care how pysco looking or how pysco he is i would love him FOREVA

  • wrong movie

  • how can it be the wrong movie if this came out first you fucking idiot

  • He's referring to the fact that Stripert is thinking of the Burton/Depp movie, not this one.

  • check out the boys power of invisabitly at 0:09:37 his hair, however stays visabile!

  • Um, this is the original one.

  • I like the new story line better.

  • tod slaughter?? in sweeney todd?! that name really works :D

  • Jonny Depp is one of my favorite actors but I'm not a fan of musicals. Had they remade this movie without all the singing, It would be the best movie ever made!

  • Perhaps you have not seen the "musical"(sort of) movie from 2000 titled Chocolat... if you like Depp :)

  • who doesnt like him! :]

  • I dunno what zulu`s have to do with Sweeny Todd LOL.

  • johnny depp does not suck!!

  • no. well, kinda. its just that great. if you like movies, and watching free movies on your computer its fer you.... i like watching movies before they sell the dvd, and sometimes they have them before they are on dvd. :)

  • I do like this version, however, I prefer Tim Burton's adaptation, and the broadway show 2nd to that.

  • Tod Slaughter? Is that supposed to be a joke???

  • are you advertising for net flix lol

  • I like the Tim Burton one way better sorry just do its way better acting thats just me were all different

  • typical

  • toods laugh is creppy

  • Better than the new one, not as good as the broadway.

  • Starring..Tod Slaughter?? Really? Is that irony I smell?

  • wow this is really old i like the new one better lolz

  • Why does everybody keep Cussing the movie is here for us to watch not to get in arguements about, jeez it makes you all look like juvenile kids.

  • S-U-C-K-S A-L-O-T

  • Sorry, not a fan of the Tim Burton version.

  • not a fan of many of Tim Burton Movies, but I liked Sweeny Todd. Very campy I agree.

  • haha, funny how the main characters name is Tod "Slaughter", haha.

  • That's the actor's name

  • the broadway show is better than all movies.
