I now totally understand now why when choosing between 30 Rock and Studio 60, they cancelled Studio 60 because Studio 60 must cost so much to film! That scene must have ran into the thousands! Great rendition of course.
Matt Perry was such a boss. Never saw him like this after Friends or even in Friends. Absolutely believable, real and a writer's actor. His chemistry with Harriet was just off the charts and that alone would have been enough to take me to the end of the series.
But there was so much more - esp. Matt's early days in Studio 60 sitting on the floor, writing to desperately get a sketch on the air. Just genius writing. A few of these episodes easily feature in Sorkin's best of all time.
I like that Studio 60 videos are never trolled. The only thing that unites everyone is the universal belief that this show should not have been canned.
The first two episodes were absolutely brilliant. The clock at the very end signalled when the show started going downhill. The show about back stage at a live comedy show that wasn't timely or funny began to go off the rails. It became about the relationships. Who knew when Studio 60 and 30 Rock came on in the same season, it would be Tina Fey with all the Emmys.
One of the best new Post-Friends shows, that was able to demonstrate what Matthew Perry was capable of. What a shame that this sketch is one of the very few examples of Studio 60 sketches that were actually good to watch :( Seeing some of their skits that were apparently supposed to be hilarious, be not very good. I reckon that was it's unfortunate downfall.
Studio 60 is something entirely different to what we're used to seeing on tv, and other classic sitcom with a simple story and humor. This is really interesting, I would pay up to 100 dollars to watch every episode, if it continues on air. it's a shame that a good show is canceled when so many others that bores instead of making people laugh. it has class and smart humor but ironicly that's why it's canceled..
Whether it's Broadway, film or television, Aaron Sorkin writes with sophistication and extreme plausability. Everyone who has seen the pilot and this episode (number two) knows that everything for Studio 60 is riding on Matt and Danny's cold open. The reworded G&S patter tune was a brilliant choice. Mr. Sorkin always embeds himself in the world he's writing about like great actors, such as Anthony Hopkins, become the characters they are portraying.
It was just too intellectual for RacerExx and adzman1000...they just didn't get it because it wasn't slapstick like so many of the crappy shows on TV. OMG, drama with some humor rather than bad acting, terrible jokes and laugh tracks. It's no wonder this country is so totally F'd up when the good shows are canceled and mindless crap runs for a decade.
This show was supposed to be kind of serious....It was "real life," and not everything in real life is funny...people sometimes just say funny things. The banter was perfect and funny. This was The West Wing but this time set in a fictional tv show, instead of a fictional presidency.
Studio 60 was such a great show. It was clever, smart, well-written all around. The problem was people seemed to be expecting a sitcom and it was really so much more than that. It's too bad the network folks didn't stand by it more, we actually had an intelligent show on the air for a change.
Whatever excuse you may come up with for the cancellation of "Studio 60", it was cancelled and I still think it was about as funny as a shoe lace (or Leno, for that matter). So much laughter.
"Studio 60" was just a show about comedy writers and studio heads. The conflict was between creative and corporate interests, or as one of the characters in "Studio 60" says, between "art and commerce." A standard conflict that goes back to "Network", where it was problematized in a superior manner. "Studio 60" had too much pathos and a misplaced sense of importance. It was just a show about writers and studio heads, yet they made it look like a show about searching for the cure for cancer.
This song is so cool, when I first saw the Episode on DVD, I repeated this scene over and over.....I also think the intro "live from studio 60 on the sunset strip, it's friday night in Hollywood" sounds very cool
One of the best shows ever, and THE best pilot ever made! Headed for cult classic status and to be studied by media geeks in college for years to come, arguing how such a superbly performed, exquisitley written, talent heavy show failed to find it's audience? I think if only they gave it time, Matt Albie and Danny Tripp would of p****d all over the likes of Jack Bauer and House!
I love and miss this show and I think if NBC would've given it some time, it could've caught on. Maybe pitting it against an established favourite as CSI: Miami wasn't the best idea either.
NBC should've known better; their history is FULL of shows that didn't start well. Anyone see the 20 Years of Must-See-Tv w/ Eric McCormack.
It faded fast and the ratings were weak. It had a lot of potential, particularly reteaming Bradley Whitford with Aaron Sorkin, but in the end, it just wasn't ready.
The odd thing was, the other show about a scetch comedy TV show (30 Rock) got the same ratings, but as it was owned by NBC, it was cheaper to make and as a 30-minute program it was easier to synicate.
@velconstantcraving "and also "30 Rock" is funny. The key difference between the two shows, I'd say" Yes, that's the key difference... velconstantcraving thinks one show is funny and the other is not... that's why NBC canceled a show they didn't own and was twice as long, taking up the same amount of time as two shows they did own, despite their ratings being equal.
I'm guessing that velconstantcraving's opinion of Jay Leno was a big thumbs up, so they canceled all 10pm shows for him.
@velconstantcraving In case you haddn't figured it out, I believe Studio 60 was very funny, smart and well written... and 30 Rock is a standard comedy with mere momments of humor.
The truth is ownership and money: Studio 60 got the same ratings, but NBC didn't make the same amount of money, so why tie up 60 minutes with a single show, when you can put 2 shows on and produce them.
The 1 hour shows were canceled for Leno anyway... for money, not because Leno was "better".

You're dumb if you think only smart comedy matters. Also, this isn't funny.

It was a Drama people. It did have humour and wit in the form of banter. It took itself seriously because it was serious.

It was mediocre. It took itself too seriously (imagine that, a show about a comedy sketch show) and lacked much of a sense of fun.
