I flew in one on a r'n'r tour back in '94. The pilot was a 29 yrs old colonel ! He let me pilot the damn thing for a few minutes while flying over the Andes.... Crazy ! All dials had cyrillic readings.
Wherever we landed the airport would stop because everybody wanted to take a look.
We have managed 4 of these charters for the company i work for, we just queezed 6 40' hc containers inside, got to meet the crew and sit in the cockpit. one nice aircraft.
I live on Vandenberg AFB (USAF Space Command Base, no aircraft) and I occasionally see 124's coming from here. I have base access to the flight line so I can view the Launch Vehicles getting unloaded and prepared for assembly, its because the parts are to big to be driven by freeway so it has to be via An-124. Thanks for posting, so this is why they come from the South of me. Just to think in an hour or two I was going to see this same craft land here at VAFB
@FlightSimulatorXATC The DC-10, KC-10, and MD-11 were all built at Long Beach. The C-17 is currently being built at Long Beach. The Air Force flys in B-1B's and the Navy flys in F/A-18's for avionic work. The C-5A has flown in for static air shows, and the President of the United States has landed in Air Force One at Long Beach. With a 10,000 foot plus main runway, it can land any heavy now flying.
Tell me why you think Long Beach is a 'small airport'?
US companies contract the use of An-124's and the 225 for heavy contractor airlifts. I've seen An-124's and C-17 delivering V-22 airframes to Texas for final assembly.
Sweet aircraft! I prefer helicopters myself...but I've been in a few of these 124's and I've been told the inside of the 225 is about the size a football field...AND THAT'S JUST THE INSIDE ALONE!,.... I work moving helo's and parts overseas...it's AWESOME to work with Volga

fuck ukraine is not available to build any fucking planes they building fucking engines for it that is it. those plane are building in russia make some fucking reserch than say some shiet
@Drake4677 An 225 is a deep upgraded 124. That was build in the USSR specially for space Buran-Energiya project. The mission was to get Buran in to space without rocket. After 1989 and the USSR collapse only 3 of 225 was builded on 100%. One of them on duty in Uliyanovsk (Russia, Volga-Dnepr cargo), another one is on duty in Roskosmos (Russian space agency), and the last one (is't flightable) is on Aviant factory in Kiev (Ukraine).
Wow I live here in Long Beach and never have had chance to witness these events, maybe next time someone please send me a notice of such event soooo coool.
@JonnyCrash Production of military equipment Russia has hosted throughout the USSR. @aktovegin -not really. It was designed and investigated by UKRAINE's Antonov Design Bureau personnel (1st known as "Izdeliye 400") which was built in Ukraine's AVIANT plants, then built in Russia's Aviastar-SP. These days yes, Ukraine lacks finances for such large projects, so it the future proposed An-124s will be a mutual effort, with both Ukraine and Russia. BTW, I googled this multiple times, and my great uncles (Dhoubovetsky) where among the head designers of the An-124 & 225 so yeah...

@jwsmithusaf I was told about a 225 which is twice as big as 124. Even a 124 has a useful load of over 500,000 lbs which is about twice of c-5's. Don't be confused with Wiki or other sources like that because payload is adjustable adding more refueling points which is justified with heavylifting. Well, maybe 6 times more payload with 225 is an exagerration but it is MUCH higher anyway.
