  • Did I just waste 8 minutes of my life on this, yes i did.It was more interesting than basic cable.

  • It's not like Arial is used a lot. Or on every website.

  • Madness?

    This is COMIC SANS!

  • This was really well done. Great documentary. I didn't realize how much this related to my life till I watched your documentary. :) Thanks

  • COOOOOOOOOOOMIIIIIIIIIC SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

  • I get that comic sans shouldn't be used for some things and that it can be overused sometimes but seriously.... people overreact way too much..

  • I actually LIKE the font of Comic Sans.

  • I bet YouTube is going to change all the text on this site to Comic Sans now [just to piss everyone off more]

  • Comic Sans walks into a bar. The barman says "We don't serve your type here."

  • Who gives a shot its a fucking font it makes no difference

  • I'm going to take my school to court if they do one more thing in Comic Sans MS font.

  • Haters gonna hate ^^

  • In Soviet Russia, ... They still hate Comic sans...

  • @morg2k999

In Soviet Russia... Its not Soviet Russia anymore...

  • @Bottlenecksify MindFuck.

  • 7:02

C'mon ...No one noticed lilxoxo69sofine? xDDD

  • love the wine goblet analogy. Very nice.

Also, thanks for the video. I came here because I just downloaded an e-book and realized the font of the whole book was comic sans.

    I threw multiple fits.

The problem I'm having isn't the font - it's the people who overuse it (and who put pdf's of good books in terrible fonts on the internet).

For speech bubbles in comics, it certainly is appropriate.

  • If I read anything else in comic sans I swear I'm gonna kill myself.

  • Jerry says, newman.... i say, comic sans

  • In e-mails etc i ask people who use Comic Sans why they chose THAT font. Their response is often, if not always "because it looked funny". Well... Corporate correspondence mustn't be fun.

One possible use for Comic sans: "YOU ARE FIRED". Fun, isn't it?

  • comic sans makes everything look cheap and bootleg.

  • I love comic sans. Its the best text ever. Seriously. Its so cool. Its my favorite of all the text. I'm not trolling. I love it.

  • @777pixlemap NO.

  • People are not going to stop using Facebook or stop drinking Sprite because its been rebranded in Comic Sans. That's the point.

  • My favourite fonts are Baskerville, and Times New Roman, because they actually have subtlety. While with Comic Sans, it's just a freaking joke. COMIC SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNSSSSSSSS

  • Anything that I know, You know and that stupid woman knows has has s**t loads of effort put in to them, Sprite, Facebook, Starbucks, All of them are either owned or are multi billion dollar company's

  • Thank you for making this. Even though I'm not a type geek I loved "Helvetica" and it's great to see something similar about its antithesis.

  • The Craveeee!!

  • If a group of designers wouldn't have said "Ban Comic Sans" none of this would happen.

  • Hey, if you want to get rid of Comic sans ms on your pc why not just go on fonts, Comic-Sans, right-click and delete??

    Problem solved!!

  • Oh my god, you guys are from Boston! Awesome! :D

  • COMIC SANS ROCKS BITCHES!

  • People it's a way to write. What's the big deal?

  • i think the guy got carried away with the wine metaphor

  • *raises fist*

    COMIC SAAANNNNNNNSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Whenever I see it I just wanna turn away.

  • OVER USE BIRTH OF A HERO FTW

  • HELVETICA BITCH.

  • I don't like comic sans, but I think a lot of people are overreacting.

  • The most hilarious use of Comic Sans I have ever seen was a flammable gas warning sign. Think of any regular warning sign forbidding cigarettes and sparks in front of gas tanks, in red, white, and black, but in Comic Sans, right down to the DANGER lettering in the oval normally printed in Helvetica Black or Impact.

  • It's so shit because:

    1. The people who use it ALWAYS TYPE IN CAPITALS. The majuscule stigma has been associated with it.

    2. It's used in the wrong context all the time, like putting a horror font on a daycare pamphlet..

  • >These people actually care what font things are written in

    HAHAHA pathetic.

  • COMIC SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNSSSSSSSSSSS

    *Punch the screen*

  • You might as well just use a crayon.

  • i have no idea what the hell anybody's talking about here...

  • 0:34

    *raises fist* COMIC SAANNNNNNNNNNNSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @wae551 cyanide and happiness reference :P

  • If I got a letter telling me I had HIV and the letter was written in comic sans, it would be as good to me as getting a letter telling me I had AIDS...

  • The shittiest font ever.

  • I don't hate comic sans BECAUSE It's comic sans, and I don't like being lumped in with that particular crowd. As a graphic designer, I can honestly say I can't ever imagine where it would be appropriate, other than in a church handout or something.

  • Turns everything into a Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff strip.

  • COMIC SAAAAAAAAAAAAANS!!!!

    *fistpump*

  • Anyone who argues about fonts is just automatically a douchebag.

    And also....

    COMIC SAAAAAAAANS!!!

  • COMIC SAAAAAAAAAAAAAANS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • BEWARE THE EVILS OF COMIC SANS!!!!!!

  • BEWARE THE EVILS OF COMIC SANS!!!!!!

  • Jesus Christ learn to pronounce the word "sans" already. I rage more about the mispronunciation of the word than the stupid font. Goddamn.

  • And the "grown up" Comic Sans is Trebuchet MS which is OVERRATED! It's humanism-friendly, anti-God, and designed by the same guy! I hated when eBay added that font in; I though that font style would stay in the 2000s! Arial/Helvetica/Verdana/Tahoma/Roman anyday!

  • @pannoni1

I don't know why Trebuchet MS is humanism,anti-god

    and what's wrong with humanism?

  • Fantastic!

btw for the rest of the world: typeface is what it is, font is the technology (the file used by your computer to show the typeface)

  • It's a fucking font, it's just preference. There is little science behind it, why make it so complicated. It's like arguing about the best color. Well red is OBVIOUSLY the best because it is so easy to notice, even on both black and white backgrounds. Who the fuck cares!?!

  • Tbh i have no strong feelings either way.

  • Comic Sans isn't a font. It's a typeface.

  • @victoriaannejonas No actually it's a font too.

  • @lokeywokey2 No actually it's a typeface. A font is regular, bold, italic, condensed ect.

  • @victoriaannejonas Lokey's right. Comic Sans only comes in two cuts, regular and bold. The regular one isn't called Comic Sans Regular, it's just Comic Sans.

  • This is some new perspective. But I'm sticking to Helvetica.

  • "Because sometimes it's better than Times New Roman"...but never better than Helvetica

  • NO, NOT FLOYD :(

  • i hate the first lady

  • I HATE COMIC SANS!!! SO MUCH!

  • Its just a font people....life doesnt revolve around typography.

  • The swedish wouldn't like it.

  • who am i?

  • Wild Words > Comic Sans.

  • Protip: No one fucking cares

    79,200 searches: "comic sans sucks"

  • Comment removed

  • I deleted Comic Sans off my computer. I don't to see it misused ever again.

  • helvetica to the rescue

  • well this is a waste of time.

  • OH GOD IT'S EVERYWHERE

  • The font itself is innocent, it's the users that are guilty for using it inappropriately. It's just a font, it does not commit crimes.

  • Comic Sans ****s harder than a hooker lol 7:56

  • my teachers used to use this all the time. i HATE this font lol

  • who cares about facebook, it´s looks fine-

  • nicely done.

  • people like it because, well i guess you can say they consider it too be "fun". i think comic sans is a neat font, the people that made the whole ban comic sans thing are fuckin stupid

  • A documentary on type and you set quotes using inch marks? Oooohh, that's typography rule 1. Folks, quote should should be curly not "

  • I find it funny that Vincent Connare invented Comic Sans because he thought Times New Roman was being used inappropriately. Nowadays, Comic Sans is used in every inappropriate context imaginable!

  • Hey my favorite font is Comic San, I don't know is it bad?. But why is it bad?. I know i'm using it before I have internet

  • It's ugly and overused?

  • It's "overused"...maybe because ppl other than those in this video LIKE IT??? Hmmm...wow, what a concept!

  • Doesn't stop it from being ugly, not to mention distracting.

  • Phht...anything is distracting if you're like OMG! That's like comic sans dude! Thats so lame because I saw this dumb video about it on youtube! OMG!

    LOL!

Thinks about it. 99.9% of the people you meet on the street won't even know this it's comic sans. 99% never heard of it. and 98.5% wouldn't even make the relation to comic books.

Not to mention when you go out in the world, 99% of ppl never seen an American comic book. Many of those who have...are already dead.

  • Comment removed

  • Dont worry about it. Microsoft, the most successful software company of this age, uses all the time in tech demos and such. And the ppl who choose this font prolly make a lot more money than these guys in this video. You are not alone in liking this. Some ppl just have better things to think about than a stupid shape of the letter.

  • @superjerjer1 it is "bad" because it used a lot! Same with papyrus... It is good for some things but not for everything. Problem is people use it for everything

  • Candara, Corbel, Calibri, Cambria. Who needs other fonts?

  • I'm sorry, as a graphic design/ typographer I HAVE to comment because no one else has... I CAN NOT believe the girl in yellow said that the starbucks and sprite branding didn't matter because people don't care about that kind of thing. umm, branding means everything actually. shes sure as hell not going to buy something with the logo written in wingding! It may not have been intentional, but they deserve a little more credit than that. Just as much "serious work" was put into those logos.

  • This looks like a video put together by some bitter font artist who wanted his work to "change the world", but instead, ppl chose Comic Sans instead of his crappy font.

  • @brighteyezxx01 Totally agree with you. A coffee brand is a big as any other... some people have no idea really about branding etc

  • @brighteyezxx01 This was an interesting video, previously I had not been aware of this debate about Comic Sans. In retrospect, I can see how fonts are important in expressing a message (book or magazine) or catching one's attention (advertising). However, a Comic Sans ban is not only quite ridiculous in concept, but a form of censorship that I have come to detest. I hope people become encouraged to use more appropriate means to limit the use of this font and avoid acting as criminals.

  • @Sthabig I'm glad that you see my point as to the intricacy of utilizing a typeface in a design, but I never said anything about banning Comic Sans. I actually believe that it can be quite beautifully when applied correctly. like in a comic book, which is what it was originally designed for (get it, comic sans? a sans serif for comic books?) I'm actually quite surprised that the documentary crew wouldn't indulge in any of the history for the typeface.

  • Also... The Ban Comic Sans website is ironic. Their logo is in Comic Sans as well.

  • Times New Roman... Is simply too dated in my opinion. I don't use Comic Sans, I don't hate it either. But my favorite font is now Calibri. Looks better than Times New Roman to be honest and more readable.

  • Simply put, THE TRUTH.

  • For the record, I did credit Beatrice Warde for her "crystal goblet" metaphor during taping, but it was edited out (due to the long-winded way in which I did it). I have the greatest respect for her and would never cite her excellent example without credit.

  • comic sans aint that bad

  • 2:24 lol

  • comic sans is a ripoff of mat groenings handwriting he even said it

  • KING COOL KC FTW:]

  • that ladie is fuckin idiot she said that facebook has no work put into it

  • @uwwefan96 No actually that might be the most sensible thing I've ever heard from the mouth of a female in years.

  • @uwwefan96 You misinterpret her meaning.

  • @uwwefan96 that's not what she said. She said work has been put into the Harry Potter and Pink Floyd typeface. She did not say facebook did not put work into it. That's just your interpretation.

  • Their success obviously didnt come from their choice of fonts or other miniscule appearance factors.

  • And remember that all art is subjective to the culture and environment in which you use it. Look at FacebookGoogle. A word inside a rectangle and alternating colors of a stupid word (now even drawn by children)? Those sites are ugly, but FUCTIONAL. Ppl a bit older than those 2010 college kids have Skipped Flash Intro/Site many times because it doesnt didnt anything useful. Most of the super successful sites are simple, to the point, and easy to use.

  • I fucking hate Comic Sans!

  • Great documentary! Straight from the heart, brothers haha! I love it

"anybody 6th grade or younger can use Comic Sans effectively"

  • An excellent documentary. Its been years since I've used Comic Sans, and I think one of the reasons it is gaining so much notice (for good or ill) is that it is used so often for so many different purposes whether it is appropriate or not.

  • Awesome documentaty. I have the very same thoughts about all this.

  • Ehh, its fine for light and kiddish stuff, but i don't think anyone is ever gonna write a contract or their resume in comics sans, i never use it anyway.

Very hard to read when the lines are close together tough.

  • <3 Comic Sans <3

  • Why does this matter at all? If you don't like the font, don't use it. It's not like people who design book covers and movies are going to start using the font...because most of them are *gasp* graphic designers! Of all the things that happen in the world, if you focus on this, you really DO need to get a new hobby.

  • On a personal and aesthetic level I despise Comic Sans but I think that xregularxjohnx hits the nail on the head when he remarks on 'the smell of elitism'. I have never met anyone that is not in the industry that gives a monkeys about typeface, provided it is legible - which comic sans clearly is. Not everything has to be set in 6pt type surrounded by bags of white space - designers need to stop creating work for themselves and create it for the audience in question.

  • and also, i think its great that someone designed a font that has been used widely by many and just makes the graphic design circle squirm in their seats.

  • You seem to have a lot of contempt for graphic designers, so I almost feel bad telling you that none of the people involved in the making of this documentary are in the field of graphic design. Sorry!

  • @xregularxjohnx The typeface wasn't designed to make designers squirm in their seats. What makes us squirm is when its applied inappropriately. It was designed for use in comic books (get it? comic sans? a sans serif for comic books?) and therefore has inherent characteristics to fit that purpose. Its not an "ugly" typeface, its just poorly utilized WAY too often... to the point of cliche.

  • The three students at the beginning are not in graphic design. We specifically asked students without any typographic or design background to give us their opinions on the altered logos. They also were not aware of what exactly they would be looking at. We just asked them to tell us if they could find anything different with the logo, and whether or not they liked it. The only people you might deem "dooshbag graphic designers" are the two professors. And even then, they are in Advertising.

  • @samandanita Boom click reload lol

  • @xregularxjohnx Apparently you associate the educated as elitist. I wonder what people refer to you as?

  • this was great!!

  • So glad I'm not the only one who hates fonts! Next up - Papyrus. Ugh - hate that one and it is EVERYWHERE.

  • I hate Comic Sans. It was supposed to by used in funny speech bubbles, but people use it for everything and I would be happy if Microsoft would stop shipping it with Windows.

  • its just letters......i'd dont use em though, i prefere arial. but still..letters is letters

  • Good job, but the people you showed Comic Sans samples to need to be more articulate.

  • I'm so sick of this Anti Comic Sans snobbery. It's just some elitist gibberish.

There's nothing wrong using it for these "friendly" notes etc and not just comics.. It'd be even worse to see everything set in helvetiva with tight tracking..

And... I think the reason Comic-sans works well in the Starbucks logo, is because of the similarity of the wawy shapes in the illustration and the roundness of the type.

  • comic sans was created ONLY for cartoon's speech bubbles. period. people who use that font for other things instead of speech bubbles don't have a clue about typography. as a graphic design student, for me that is absolutely clear. please, stop using comic sans. you have Helvetica, which is an extremely readable and beautiful type. For long texts, why don't you use a serif font, like Times? don't spend time with ridicule and "out of context" fonts!

  • Times New Roman was created for the Times newspaper! People who use that for other texts are idiots! Boo-hoo!

  • Times is a completely different thing. yes, TImes was created with a purpose, so what? Every type is made with a purpose. Ads, newspapers, magazines, for titles, for text, for big formats... For everything! You just have to use it well, not out of context! DAH!

  • Comic Sans is a good font, very useful.

  • i think it's the complete opposite.

  • wow...the ignorance of this comment actually made me renew my youtube account..."created ONLY for speech bubbles" HA...and then "as a graphic design student" you suck helveticas dick...haha...why because it has a film about it and you hate comic sans because everyone else does?

im sure when you were younger you stopped using comic sans because you were told not to not because you stopped liking it just like everyone else.

a good font just has to be likeable not beautiful

    univers > helvetica

  • well.. i'm still young, i don't use comic sans because it's a font created for a purpose, not to apply in everything.

and I KNOW THAT HELVETICA IS NOT THE ONLY FONT IN THE WORLD. ok?

why comics is used by people who don't have a clue about graphic design? you can name ANY great designer and you see that they DON'T use comic sans. should i say... Milton Glaser? Stefan Sagmeister? Paula Scher? Peter Saville? give me a break...

helvetica is not like univers, it's based on akzidenz grotesk.

  • It's survived because Microsoft refuse to stop including it in their software. I use a Mac, which doesn't have Comic Sans, and I have never had to use it. That's the bottom line.

Well, this is the bottom line, to be precise.

  • People hate it because it's inappropriate usage is shoved under (or rather in front of) their nose so often. It's quite a reasonable reaction to that and doesn't mean they don't know much about typography as the video asserts.

The font Chicago from Apple had similar over-exposure in the late 80's early 90's as it was default font on classic Mac OS (then used primarily by designers). Chicago was designed as screen font, not for printing and so it's usage was even more inappropriate in print.

  • This was awesome!

  • Comic Sans isn't that bad... it's just used in a wrong way... it's a font for comic-strips...not more...not less...

  • I agree, use it for what it was originally designed for...

  • He should be hanged for crimes against humanity. Or is that taking it too seriously? Well, then give us back all of the extra wasted brain power our eyes had to use to read the piece of shit, and we'll call it square. Oh, he can't give back that time? Then hang him. He has done more damage to typography than any collection of people in history.

No one should defend the font. There's not a single reason for its use or continued existence.

  • You don't... You can use this font in your webpage

  • Nice Job - I hate comic sans, personally but I can see that in some cases it is appropriate. It's just overused.

  • Very interesting indeed

  • No fun. My love of comic sans is gone. Sniff.... what's left for a perky e-mailer to use?!
