It is now obvious that Barrett's solo compositions 1968-70 tower above his contemporaries' work, and may be the single most influential body of musical work to emerge from British rock. Many inaccuracies have been written about Barrett, but a recommended reading is Malcolm Jones' "The Making of The Madcap Laughs". Jones, who produced most of Madcap, and worked directly with Barrett in the recording studio, describes a focused, together Barret, definitely not the Barret former sidemen describe.
Lean out your window, golden hair.I heard yo singing in the midnight air,My book is closed,I read no more.Whatching the fire dance, on the floor.Ive left my book,Ive left my room.
For i heard you singing through the gloom
Singing and singing, a merry air;Lean out the window, golden hair....
Hope Sandoval sings a fine cover of this Syd song with her band playing a less-laid back, more dramatic sounding electric guitar version as part of the 2010 Syd tribute album The Madcap Laughs Again, where many artists contributed covers of songs from Syd's 1970 album.Hope also released it later as a single. I was disappointed in Hope's version on first listening, not liking how she altered Syd's vocal melody. But repeated listenings converted me to absolutely loving Hope's too!Worth checking out.
Sly James Joyce in his letters confessed the title of "Chamber Music" , from which Syd took the words for this song, was in fact inspired by the sound of a prostitute peeing into a chamber pot! Joyce himself was a talented tenor singer, & used the title also because he felt the verses were lyrically musical & should be set to music. Syd did a fine job here, but I nominate Donovan's musical version of Yeats' poem "The Song of the Wandering Aengus" as an even greater song-rendering of a poem!
@serpico89 YES! I love it, too! Barrett is reciting James Joyce in this! It later took shape as "The Nile Song," (through Dave Gilmore)..on the soundtrack "More" If you haven't herd it, have a listen! You may not recognize it at first, but....it's THERE!
@glamourXparty why are you so mean? :'-(( i was looking at your channel and your favorite band is pink floyd. pink floyd is my favorite band too!
when i wrote the thing bout bieber is was kinda a way to end to whole "the one dislike was justin bieber" to any video, statement. i never liked bieber, i'm saying syd barrett was way better than justin bieber will ever be.
@serpico89 because its got nothing to do with justin fucking beiber. syd wouldnt give a shit about justin beiber, and this song/artist has nothing to do with him either, so why mention him? you're so illiterate, it seems, to be able to tell people how you feel about this song. all you can do is say "this is better than justin beiber" cheers for your input. i supposed you "hate justin beiber" as well? without actually realising its the record industry you should hate.
@alexthemod1 okaaay okaay peopl. i think your all taking this a little too farrr. i was joking about the whole justin beiber statement. did u even fucking read my comment to glamourXparty? apparently not. i said the 'beiber' thing BECAUSE i HATE it when people say that all the time damnitt!!! i don't give a rat's ass about justin bieber. did u even look at fucking channel bro? i have a pink floyd wallpaper for crying out loud. there my all time favorite band, half of videos i have are dedicated
@alexthemod1 to them. words can't even begin to describe how MUCH i admire syd barret, he's ones of the reasons i started to listen to music in the first place. so i guess yourrr the one's who illiterate eh?
@glamourXparty -___-....what are you talking about??? i told u whyyy i wrote about justin beiber then u say "no one cares"....wow really? apparently saying my bad, is too much for you.
@serpico89 It's just annoying how u went on and on about it stating facts and all this pointless ranting shit. Now instead of comments about the song it's comments about u being overly deffensive about things that no one gives a shit about. Calm down, and stfu. =)
@glamourXparty .....>((( i'm not being overly deffensive!!! all i did was say why i commented like that, but other people besides u, kept saying the same thing oveeer and oveeer againnnnn. i had to repeat myself since people are so dumb that they can't scroll down to see my reason.
@serpico89 Stop having your period and just shut up already. As I said before, way too many pointless comments have now been filled with your defensive bs instead of comments on the song or artist. I'm done, goodbye.
@glamourXparty SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP, SHUT THE FUCK UP
@mussman717word - i like melodies. Something said was very good at,besides his lyrics. This song's ok. I think the song, "Dark Globe," By Syd Barrett is way better! Give it a listen!
Yes, I've heard it before. Great song. It's impossible to go wrong with Syd, though, and he obviously saw something in these words of James Joyce. So, it's quite simple, Syd is Syd, and is always impressive, haha.
@mussman717word -N doubt! Syd was a Poet! I prefer The later Floyd Stuff, but still think that Syd's music is very very special!! Almost like a Bob Dylan or a John Lennon. Extremely talented artist!!
Right on. Pink Floyd w/ Barrett and w/o Barrett are like two different entities altogether, but as far as I'm concerned, once you reach the level of genious posessed by Floyd, Dylan, Syd, Lennon, many (though few) others, Zeppelin, John Frusciante, Velvet Underground, it's impossible to compare that kind of greatness. Everybody's taste changes with the wind, you know.

Daniel Johnsto's music to me sounds way far but in some way similar syd's music.
they are both very simple but beautiful, sure syd's songs are much smoother than Daniels but i like the roughness in Daniels music too. yeah!
