I definitely agree with what you said about raising our expectations. Something that has challenged my thinking a lot lately is Desiring God by John Piper. He says that true worship is greedily pursuing God for the true pleasure that only comes from His presence. There is nothing that we can give to Him other than our delight at what He gives to us. So, I think we should enter worship with higher expectations, yes. But higher expectations of God's glory and beauty, rather than of ourselves.
