Anyone who parks in a disabled space and isn't disabled is a scumbag. They need to be closer and they also need the wider spaces to maneuver their wheelchairs.
I am entitled to park in the disabled parking bays but I'm not actually in a wheelchair. Even I don't like parking in them as I think they are for wheelchair users more than they are for me. I caught a window washer using the handicapped parking for his van so he didn't have to walk the extra 20'. We had a nice argument. Apparently the business owner said he should park there for convenience. Some people just don't understand.
There is a phone app for reporting drivers without disabled parking permits - use it everyone, and please spread the word! Google parkingmobility for the link.
I am utterly baffled, even months later, to this exchange of comments between @mtkw08 and @Tat2Dragons over this post. This behavior and mindset @mtkw08 carries is the true disability of today's society, so perhaps @mtkw08 does have the right to park in these specific spots...
Also, handicap spaces are wider, so you can place a wheelchair by the car door. Usually it's impossible for a wheelchair user to get out of the car in a normal parking space.
no matter what ur opinion of who was at fault, the facts are that the spaces are there for a reason......but my opinion is at least, bc of the video, there is a dialog going on about this very important matter!!
What about the single guy taking the pregnant spot or the family parking! That's just as bad!! Juggling three kids with the stroller, diaper bag, toddlers wandering off! Those family parking spots are there for people with little kids! But since you do not get a ticket for parking there, no one ever respects them.
lol didn't expect the ending. but he shouldn't have been wheeling so close to the vehicles, why not wheel down the center? and i agree with the guy, it's not his fault those people are disabled.
@mtkw08@mtkw08 Really? Just as a pedestrian has a right to travel past that area, so does a person in a wheelchair. How about instead you of blaming this type of accident on the person in the chair, you blame it on the one who was actually at fault...the clueless driver who wasn't paying attention. Oh and you're correct, it's not your fault they're disabled, but it most certainly doesn't give you a right to park wherever the hell you want.
@Tat2Dragons maybe he does have a "right" to travel there. but you see what happened when he did. even regular people shouldn't walk so close. and no it isn't the drivers fault they didn't see something below their field of vision. they must not have a rear view camera or parking sensors and without those things can be invisible to you. i park where i want because i can, until someone stops me i will continue
@mtkw08 Not the drivers fault? I don't know what video you watched, but from what I saw the driver of that SUV reversed entirely too fast and obviously wasn't looking. Anyway, no one should ever be reversing that fast in any parking lot. If they would have checked their side mirror and not reversed like a crazy person, they more than likely would have seen him as he was passing by. You seemed to of missed the point...you can park anywhere you want, the disabled can not.
@Tat2Dragons maybe the driver shouldn't have been reversing so fast, which does make this video a bit unrealistic. SUV's are higher up and you can't see as low as a car would be able to. it would be the same if it was a little child walking to close to the vehicle. disabled can park anywhere. double parking will solve the space problem. or parking right up to the sidewalk for a short amount of time.
@mtkw08 Yes I'm aware an SUV is higher up as I've owned/driven quite a few of them and my current vehicle is an SUV so I'm very familiar with the differences. Obviously one has to be a lot more cautious when reversing. Saying the disabled can park anywhere is simply not true, there's an excellent example shown in the video.Take notice that he was unable to exit his vehicle in a standard spot. If someone were to actually park where you suggested, they'd probably be ticketed, as it's illegal.
@Tat2Dragons you cannot put all the blame on the driver if someone gets hit as they are reversing. sure they should be looking but so should anyone behind them. again if he wasn't so close it wouldn't have been a problem. people put too much emphasis on this. what about if all the disabled spots are filled with disabled vehicles, what will the person do then? i have two cousins who never park in the spots. they park at the end and wheel their way up. if they don't care, why do nondisabled people
@mtkw08 A driver is to be in control of their vehicle at all times.People have a right to walk/roll through a parking lot past vehicles. You as a driver need to pay more attention. Also he wasn't even that close to the vehicles.Usually if the disabled spots are full they will either leave, wait for one available, or look for an end spot that would allow them to exit with out being blocked in. Non disabled people care because some understand the actual purpose of those spots...they actually get it.
@Tat2Dragons yes someone is supposed to be in control of their vehicle but at the same time pedestrians are supposed to pay attention to vehicles. he looked pretty close to me. as i said he could have easily wheeled down the center of the lot. and so you admit it isn't the end of the world if the spots are full? and i get the purpose of the spots too. but obviously videos like this aren't going to stop people from parking in them.
@mtkw08 Well as a wheelchair user I can tell you that wheeling down the center of a parking lot can be even more dangerous. Correct, it's not the end of the world if they're are all taken, but the point I was trying to make was that it can be quite an inconvenience to go through, just because some selfish person chose to illegally park in a designated handicapped parking spot. Videos can get the point across to some people and I think some is certainly better than none at all.
@Tat2Dragons it would seem that being in the center would make you more visible since rear view mirrors would be able to see you. it may be illegal but it doesn't mean the person is selfish. maybe they're just getting some medicine or tissues and won't be very long. in my experience there are at least twenty spots so they're never all taken. people have different reasons for parking in the spaces. videos may work for a while, but i bet the person will return to doing it soon enough.
@mtkw08 Yes it may make you more visible, but by you being in the center you're getting in the way of the other vehicles that are driving though the parking lot.Actually it makes them very selfish, I don't care what their reason is for parking there...they shouldn't ever do it and if they choose to, I hope they get a huge ticket.Oh and I don't know where you're parking, but I've never seen that many empty spots anywhere.Whether they're empty, or not you should never park in those spots PERIOD.
@Tat2Dragons yes you'd be in the way but could easily move if need be. where i live there are always a ton of handicap spaces. and even police officers who are on or off duty park there so it's pretty much a free for all. but again i'm always in and out of stores in less than five minutes. if i know i'll be longer i just park somewhere else.
@mtkw08 Oh yeah, because getting out of the way of multiple moving vehicle in a parking lot is so easy to do.lol :) From personal experiences I can say that by traveling down the center you're are greatly increasing your risk of being hit. I'm glad to hear you have a ton of handicap spots available, it's too bad they are being taken by inconsiderate, selfish individuals. You really don't get it...it doesn't matter how long you're going to be parked there, stop being lazy and park somewhere else.
@Tat2Dragons i understand where you're coming from. i just don't think it's fair that i must park all the way in the back and haul whatever it is i'm buying all the way out there just because i'm able bodied.
@mtkw08 Fair...come on now, you're able bodied and can walk a little bit of a distance...deal with it and stop being so damn lazy.Myself and many others who are disabled would surely trade places with you in a heart beat to be able to park at the end of a parking lot and actually be able to walk that distance. You keep saying you understand, yet you still continue to talk as though it's not big deal to park in those spots. After hearing all your excuses, it's obvious that you really don't get it.
@Tat2Dragons i do get it. i just don't care. i understand a lot of things that people find wrong. and again i do not care. until the police tell me to stop i will not. unless you follow every rule in the book i don't think you're in the position to tell people they're breaking the law.
@mtkw08 NEWS FLASH! Everyone who's read your responses knows that YOU DON'T CARE. Maybe one of these days you'll wake up and realize that what you have been doing is wrong and you'll change your ways. Oh and Good Luck with having a Police Officer tell you to not park in those spots. Yeah they'll tell you alright and it will be by issuing you a nice fat ticket.lol By myself and everyone else actually knowing the law, that does put us in a position to tell you that your are breaking the law.
@mtkw08 We all can tell that you probably won't change. So you think a Police Officer probably won't issue you a ticket because they also break that law? Yeah good luck with that one.lol Try explaining that brilliant defense to a Police Officer who doesn't put up with people like you.lol Maybe one of these days someone will see you illegally parked in a handicap spot and call the Police on you and have you ticketed. F.Y.I. People do that a lot more than you may think they do.:)
@Tat2Dragons 911 is for emergencies and someone parking in a handicap spot is not an emergency. i'd guess that person would get a citation. and as i stated before, it's really no one else's business where i park.
@mtkw08 Yes of course it's not an emergency, this is why you dial the non emergency phone number and ask if they have an Officer who's in your the area that can assist you. So no, that person would not get a citation for calling the Police. You may think it's no ones business, but when you chose to park in a spot in which you are not legally allowed to do so, then it really opens your chances of someone actually making it their business. This is just a little something for you to think about.
@Tat2Dragons i've thought about it and still not convinced. as i said, until i get a citation, i will continue doing it. much like anything else someone might do that they receive no consequence for.
@mtkw08 Well if after everything that has been said you're still not convinced that what you are doing is plain wrong, selfish, totally inconsiderate and illegal. Then I really don't know what else to say to you. Although I will say that for the sake of those around you, I hope that one of these days you'll wake up and actually think about someone else other than yourself and stop going around thinking you're entitled to things in that you're clearly not.
@Tat2Dragons and i can see that i'm not going to change your mind either. i have enjoyed this conversation though. so thank you for that and good day :)
@mtkw08 "Until the police tell me to..." What are you, twelve? Can't you think for yourself, instead of only bending over when an authority tells you to? Laws are there for a reason, try to grasp that reason. If you are able.
@ohcmeon i can and do think for myself obviously, since everyone else here doesn't think it's okay to park in the spots. about the laws, i guess you never disobey them right? not one mile per hour over the limit? never gone even a centimeter over the white line at a stop sign? unless you follow every last law and have never broken it any, don't talk about laws being in place for a reason.
@mtkw08 Just because the police officers are idiots doesn't mean you should be too. Also, if everyone took the spaces like you do, then were wouldn't be a "ton" of them. Luckily others in your area are not selfish assholes.
@ohcmeon there doesn't need to be a ton of them anyway. there aren't that many disabled people around here. a store used to do the same for expecting mothers. a whole section just for them. there aren't that many pregnant women so they were taken away.
True its sad that some people take advantage of disabiled parking. Myself is deaf, I only use it at nighttime because I can't hear, and people hold gun to me, and saying hands up, i can't hear, that is huge scary risk for deaf at nighttime. :( But I rarely use it anyway, knowing theres other who need it more than me

OMG.. I happens so often.... and unfortunately.. there is no consequence for it.. meanwhile i am turning around and trying to get to places. just yestarday, my handicap spot where I live was taken for 1 1/2 hours, I needed to park on the visitors parking , inform the supeintendets of building and wait for them to do something.. nothing happened, and the person that took my spot left with no consequence..
Brilliant!!!! I wish they showed that in uk! I am disabled and often have my baby on my lap too. I am sick of people abusing me for my " unfair priority parking" I am also amazed how often Jesus cures " disabled people" when it's pouring with rain? I mean they park in a disabled space yet run back to the car in the rain!!!! Not happened to me yet! Must just miss him?
OMG I'VE BEEN SHOKED BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE THE COUPLE WHO WOULD BACKED INTO HIM OMG I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT WHAT THE DISTANCE OF PARKING COULD MAKE AND I DON'T DRIVE AND VERY SENSIBLE TO PEOPLE ANYWAYS THANK YOU TO GIVES US HIS DAILY LIFE REALITY ! XXX
Great video - as a wheelchair- user friend of mine said about people that steal disabled bays: that guy was disabled - he was clearly paralyzed from the neck up!! Selfish fool!
I saw a pamphlet that the parking enforcement officers in my city put on cars illegally parked in disabled parking spots along with the ticket. It is titled "Lazy is not a disability!" I saw it as my friend is an officer. I do not require disabled parking but I am very passionate about this issue. Very well done video!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! This has been one of my biggest peeves about going out in public; in fact, some days my anxiety over dealing with law-breakers, rudeness, and ignorance is so bad, that I have panic attacks and either can't leave my home, or need to be medicated. Because of *THAT* exact mentality!!
I even added it up one day...if you read my blog post (www_heelsnwheels_info/Ill-just-minute-6845887) on it, you'll see what I mean. On average, I lose 5.42 days per year from this!!!
I am a very high level amputee (right hip, pelvis and leg) and I usually use crutches or sometimes use a very cumbersome prosthesis. To get my crutches or prosthesis out of the car, I have to be able to open my door all the way. I have seen A/B people park in the grid lines (meant to give space for someone with mobility devices) get out of their car. The able-bodied individual will say "Oh..I thought if I parked in the grid lines you'd have room to get out.." UHG! Ignoramuses!
I hear excuses "I was only going to be 2 minutes", "Everyone else does it..." or "i only took it because there was absolutely no where else to park and I was in a hurry." Uhg! I wish these people would get caught and fined - but it seems like no one pays attention - so they keep getting away with it. So I park at the back of the lot and crutch all the was across the lot or have to wait for a disabled spot and have people honking and yelling at me for blocking the lane.
I was on board until the guy got run over. What is this "The [canadian] Jungle"? A much better ending would have been if the rude couple could have come out and seen the disabled guy having trouble getting out of his car in a normal parking spot, or a similar everyday difficulty. There's no need for such dramatization.
@yuugiho I think it was just highlighting that when you're in a wheelchair, cars cannot necessarily see you through their windows (hence there are reasons for disabled parking that some might not even think of). He didn't even necessarily die or anything.
@yuugiho the video is saying that even though the couple didn't hurt the guy in the wheel chair; he still had a long way to wheel himself to. You wouldn't want to walk all that way, why should he do it, but double.
@yuugiho the video is saying even if you were just going into a store for a min or 2 the time you left someone who was actually disabled and needed the parking spot could have taken it. Also it shows how it can be a hassle, and dangerous for disabled people. He had to park in 2 different spots. The first spot he couldn't get out since he parked in a normal parking spot and someone drove into the spot beside him.
@yuugiho the second spot was really far for him but in the video it seems that the man was fine with it and didn't mind... but while wheeling to the store because of how low he was in the wheel chair the person driving the car didn't notice him wheeling by and struck him. moral is don't park in a handicap parking spot 2 mins or a min can be life changing for someone
That would have been a cliché. The fact that the guy has so much trouble without the couple even noticing him emphasizes the idea that even if you don't see it, you can cause harm.
That would have been a cliché. The fact that the guy has so much trouble without the couple even noticing him emphasizes the idea that even if you don't see it, you can cause harm.
@yuugiho This is a very real issue and they were trying to make a point of the extreme danger poised to wheelchair users while crossing parking lots. It's not just "everyday difficulty"; I have had four extremely close calls when I've almost been run over because cars didn't see me, and many people in wheelchairs have been run over in parking lots. Yes, because of my wheelchair, I'm very mobile and I have no trouble pushing myself across parking lots, but I'm "riding low" and not visible.
really everyone should back into parking so you can see when coming out if someone like a guy in a wheel chair or child is in the way... just looking out the back windows does not mean its all clear you have a lot of room you cant see
This reminds me of when I almost backed up over a woman's toddler before I heard her scream and I stopped. She acted as if she was angry with me, but honestly- how could I have possibly seen that child? However, her scream saved not only the toddler, but my life as well! Thank god for screaming women.
@pethcir That's it? Because of the fine? How selfish of you - but thank goodness for the fine so that people like you who only care because you might get caught will not take the spot from those that truly need it.
@oneleggedjo I think you misunderstood what I was getting at. There's a reason why the fine for illegally parking in a handicap zone. It's EXTREMELY disrespectful, and yes the amount acts as a deterrence. How am I selfish?
@pethcir Because people that do not need the disabled parking should not park there because it is selfish and unkind; not just because there is a fine. I agree - both are needed because no matter what - selfish jerks will always exist, but your post made it sound like that was the only reason you don't park in disabled spots -- because of the fine, not because of it just being simply wrong and selfish.
Whoa I have never stolen a disabled parking spot and never planned on doing so but now I see exactly why they are there. Didn't think about how they got out of the car and the fact that they can't be seen by people backing up. Good video.
@chefbakercook Yes. That's why it's also important not to park in the hatched spaces *next* to the parking spot. Wheelchair users need five feet free space to get out of a car (open the door, pull their chair up to the driver's seat to get out) and eight feet for a van (for the lift/ramp)
this film is to all the jerks that always steal the disabled spots when you're perfectly able to walk and don't have any constraint affecting your ability to walk a short distance from a parking lot into a store.
I am a 27 year old girl and I don't drive, but I do need the parking space because I am on oxygen and sometimes it's way to long of a walk to get to the store, the tanks are only a few hours long, plus with having to carry them around outside in the cold drains my energy and i lose my breathe. I don't mind being in the middle sometimes, but i won't go in if it's too far back I'll just wait till the parking space is free
Probably most won't feel that affected by this. But how many here have used the toilet for disabled people although they are not, blocking access for people who can't go to the normal toilet? Very opening commercial. Thank you!
@NewsSocial Thank you for pointing this out- - besides the parking ordeal, I absolutely hate it when I use the restroom and the handicapped stall is occupied with 12 other open stalls available. My wheelchair does NOT fit in those narrow stalls and people don't stop to think - all they think of is "bigger is better".
To be honest, I was one of those people who resented handicap parking spaces... It never occurred to me ONCE that the reason why the handicapped need to park near the entrance is because of the dangers 'wheeling' through a parking lot unseen... No one would ever let a child less than four feet high wander through a parking lot alone for that same reason...
@aveyowyns i hope so. at least you can admit it. It's really a big job for them to do the same thing as us (normal people). im glad you opened you eyes :). Contrary to what the guy says at the end, this is an essential service and not only a simple privilege
This is my nightmare. I wish people would understand how dangerous going through a parking lot with a wheelchair is.

Tat2Dragons 10 months ago
@Tat2Dragons 911 is for emergencies and someone parking in a handicap spot is not an emergency. i'd guess that person would get a citation. and as i stated before, it's really no one else's business where i park.
mtkw08 10 months ago
@mtkw08 Yes of course it's not an emergency, this is why you dial the non emergency phone number and ask if they have an Officer who's in your the area that can assist you. So no, that person would not get a citation for calling the Police. You may think it's no ones business, but when you chose to park in a spot in which you are not legally allowed to do so, then it really opens your chances of someone actually making it their business. This is just a little something for you to think about.
Tat2Dragons 10 months ago
@Tat2Dragons i've thought about it and still not convinced. as i said, until i get a citation, i will continue doing it. much like anything else someone might do that they receive no consequence for.
mtkw08 10 months ago
@mtkw08 Well if after everything that has been said you're still not convinced that what you are doing is plain wrong, selfish, totally inconsiderate and illegal. Then I really don't know what else to say to you. Although I will say that for the sake of those around you, I hope that one of these days you'll wake up and actually think about someone else other than yourself and stop going around thinking you're entitled to things in that you're clearly not.
Tat2Dragons 10 months ago
@Tat2Dragons and i can see that i'm not going to change your mind either. i have enjoyed this conversation though. so thank you for that and good day :)
mtkw08 10 months ago
@mtkw08 You're welcome. I've also enjoyed our conversations on here. Good day Sir.:)
Tat2Dragons 10 months ago
@mtkw08 "Until the police tell me to..." What are you, twelve? Can't you think for yourself, instead of only bending over when an authority tells you to? Laws are there for a reason, try to grasp that reason. If you are able.
ohcmeon 11 months ago
@ohcmeon i can and do think for myself obviously, since everyone else here doesn't think it's okay to park in the spots. about the laws, i guess you never disobey them right? not one mile per hour over the limit? never gone even a centimeter over the white line at a stop sign? unless you follow every last law and have never broken it any, don't talk about laws being in place for a reason.
mtkw08 10 months ago
@mtkw08 Just because the police officers are idiots doesn't mean you should be too. Also, if everyone took the spaces like you do, then were wouldn't be a "ton" of them. Luckily others in your area are not selfish assholes.
ohcmeon 11 months ago
@ohcmeon there doesn't need to be a ton of them anyway. there aren't that many disabled people around here. a store used to do the same for expecting mothers. a whole section just for them. there aren't that many pregnant women so they were taken away.

Sadly part is that it does happen very often .. but jeez wiz . Us Deaf.. come on we don't need it.....xo

Great video - as a wheelchair- user friend of mine said about people that steal disabled bays: that guy was disabled - he was clearly paralyzed from the neck up!! Selfish fool!

I rarely use handicapped parking spaces and I AM handicapped. I just feel that other people need them more.

Ignoramuses!
oneleggedjo 1 year ago 2

There's no need for such dramatization.
yuugiho 1 year ago
@yuugiho I think it was just highlighting that when you're in a wheelchair, cars cannot necessarily see you through their windows (hence there are reasons for disabled parking that some might not even think of). He didn't even necessarily die or anything.
cleodel88 1 year ago
@yuugiho the video is saying that even though the couple didn't hurt the guy in the wheel chair; he still had a long way to wheel himself to. You wouldn't want to walk all that way, why should he do it, but double.
moneychica 1 year ago
@yuugiho the video is saying even if you were just going into a store for a min or 2 the time you left someone who was actually disabled and needed the parking spot could have taken it. Also it shows how it can be a hassle, and dangerous for disabled people. He had to park in 2 different spots. The first spot he couldn't get out since he parked in a normal parking spot and someone drove into the spot beside him.
TiMm3h755 1 year ago
@yuugiho the second spot was really far for him but in the video it seems that the man was fine with it and didn't mind... but while wheeling to the store because of how low he was in the wheel chair the person driving the car didn't notice him wheeling by and struck him. moral is don't park in a handicap parking spot 2 mins or a min can be life changing for someone
TiMm3h755 1 year ago
@yuugiho

Yes, because of my wheelchair, I'm very mobile and I have no trouble pushing myself across parking lots, but I'm "riding low" and not visible.

really everyone should back into parking so you can see when coming out if someone like a guy in a wheel chair or child is in the way... just looking out the back windows does not mean its all clear you have a lot of room you cant see
cab435 1 year ago
This reminds me of when I almost backed up over a woman's toddler before I heard her scream and I stopped. She acted as if she was angry with me, but honestly- how could I have possibly seen that child? However, her scream saved not only the toddler, but my life as well! Thank god for screaming women.

I would never park in a handicap spot, not because I'm worried about something like this happening, but because the fine is huge.
pethcir 1 year ago
@pethcir That's it? Because of the fine? How selfish of you - but thank goodness for the fine so that people like you who only care because you might get caught will not take the spot from those that truly need it.
oneleggedjo 1 year ago
@oneleggedjo I think you misunderstood what I was getting at. There's a reason why the fine for illegally parking in a handicap zone. It's EXTREMELY disrespectful, and yes the amount acts as a deterrence. How am I selfish?
pethcir 1 year ago
@pethcir Because people that do not need the disabled parking should not park there because it is selfish and unkind; not just because there is a fine. I agree - both are needed because no matter what - selfish jerks will always exist, but your post made it sound like that was the only reason you don't park in disabled spots -- because of the fine, not because of it just being simply wrong and selfish.

Whoa I have never stolen a disabled parking spot and never planned on doing so but now I see exactly why they are there. Didn't think about how they got out of the car and the fact that they can't be seen by people backing up. Good video.
chefbakercook 1 year ago 19
@chefbakercook Yes. That's why it's also important not to park in the hatched spaces *next* to the parking spot. Wheelchair users need five feet free space to get out of a car (open the door, pull their chair up to the driver's seat to get out) and eight feet for a van (for the lift/ramp)
CapriUni 1 year ago 2
this film is to all the jerks that always steal the disabled spots when you're perfectly able to walk and don't have any constraint affecting your ability to walk a short distance from a parking lot into a store.
@MEMOQuebec a job well done.
DestinedRevolution 1 year ago 3
I am a 27 year old girl and I don't drive, but I do need the parking space because I am on oxygen and sometimes it's way to long of a walk to get to the store, the tanks are only a few hours long, plus with having to carry them around outside in the cold drains my energy and i lose my breathe. I don't mind being in the middle sometimes, but i won't go in if it's too far back I'll just wait till the parking space is free
jesskat 1 year ago
Probably most won't feel that affected by this. But how many here have used the toilet for disabled people although they are not, blocking access for people who can't go to the normal toilet? Very opening commercial. Thank you!
NewsSocial 1 year ago 2
@NewsSocial Thank you for pointing this out- - besides the parking ordeal, I absolutely hate it when I use the restroom and the handicapped stall is occupied with 12 other open stalls available. My wheelchair does NOT fit in those narrow stalls and people don't stop to think - all they think of is "bigger is better".
cmd9603 1 year ago
This is heart breaking. I will NEVER park in a parking spot reserved for someone with a disability.

amazing video. this should be played on tv for awareness. im sure A LOT of people have done this before.
TheTheoristsLair 1 year ago 2
absolutely LOVED it...
This was SUCH an eyeopener...
aveyowyns 1 year ago 7
@aveyowyns i hope so. at least you can admit it. It's really a big job for them to do the same thing as us (normal people). im glad you opened you eyes :). Contrary to what the guy says at the end, this is an essential service and not only a simple privilege
