We would ALWAYS save this for the final ride for our day at Epcot. I miss the Dreamfinder version terribly. Poor Figment, having to share the space with Dr. Channing now. It's just not the same.
This is still an incredible ride. It's unconscionable that Disney took it out and replaced it with the epic fail of a ride that's there now. If rides like it's a small world, Peter Pan and Jungle Cruise can survive intact, why did they have to ruin this one?
why did they change this! i like how the new ride uses modern technology but its not as creative and its not even the same theme! USE YOUR FREEK'N IMAGINATION DISNEY!!!
@TheCubanGringo actually, I believe he wanted to build a second Disneyland in Orlando but other than that I don't think he had much else in mind other than his EPCOT city. In fact, half the reason for wanting to go to Florida was to be able to build Disneyland and not have a bunch of cheesy hotels surrounding the place and screwing up the atmosphere. I think his original idea was to build Disneyland and then have EPCOT surrounding it
This ride looks like a lot of fun. But it was closed by the time I went on my first trip to Disney in 1999. I know this because when I was there, the Pooh ride was already opened, and it's 2011 now.
@greekyct it is. I saw some ride blueprints of both this original one and of the new one, and the new one blocks off, like, a third of the ride system
When I was little this was my absolute favorite ride in the whole of Disney World. I had Figment shirts, toys, horns you name it. If they made it with Figment I had it. I could spend hours at the Imagination Pavilion both on the ride and paying with the leaping water. Thank you so much for uploading this video! You really have brought my childhood back to life with it. I was so disappointed that it was changed. Can some one tell me what the original change was in 2000?
The carousel at 1:19 reminds me, that's like a running theme with Disney World. Carousel of Progress, Fantasyland carousel, the one in Small World. I think it's because that's where Walt first conceived Disneyland.
@jackhornsby I think it might be an homage to the carousel that Walt's little girls were riding on when he thought "Hey, why can't there be a place where kids AND parents can ride side-by-side and have fun?"
@Dragonrider1227 More importantly, I believe that the idea of making a fortune off a place like that never really crossed Walt's mind; he just wanted to be able to have fun alongside his daughters instead of watching from the sidewalk. A true visionary, he was, and the world is sadder for his loss :(
@Thoralmir Everyone experiences their mid-life crisis differently. If Walt Disney's led to the creation of Disneyland, Walt Disney World, and the other Disney Parks, I won't be the first to start complaining!
I LOVE this ride...my brother has been in love with Figment since 1991?or 1992 I can't remember what year it was...he loved this version but also likes the new one...I didn't see the 2000 one but from what I hear it was horrible...but for Ryan's sake Figment is ridden...over and over and over and over...etc - his favorite ride besides It's a Small World!
Whoaaa. I just watched this for the first time and I now know EXACTLY what people are talking about. The current version is so dull (not to mention irritating) but this is chock full of genuine imagination!!! What the heck were they thinking?! So disappointed I never got to ride this version :(.
I have always wanted to see what is on the top floor since it is not open anymore.... :( Oh well... Disney might be doing some "imagination" brain thinking about maybe changing the ride again!
This ride honestly TRAUMATIZED me as a kid. It was just pure sensory overload....I've never recovered since. I wish it still existed so I could face my fears...
This is the greatest attraction that I have never experienced. I can't even describe how I feel when I watch this-it's stunnning! I can't wait to see what the future holds for this attraction...
WOW. It is amazing how awesome this version of the ride is compared to the one that's there now. Thanks for posting this. I'm glad to be able to re-live it again.
Even though a video can't fufill the whole experience of a Disney ride, this one brings back the memories. I still crack a smile when I see relics of the original JII.
for those that said, i dunno who said it, but without that, the net wouldn't exist, neither would youtube, and the teo men who invented youtube would still be working at paypal in an office job which would suck.
Yeah, the new one's nice and all, but this one has pomp, power, emotion, magic, thrills, chills, it really gave people a real kick in their imaginations and the whole concept of the dream port was grand. The new one is fine if you want to learn about the senses, but for a real jumpstart of imagination watch these old videos of "Journey into Imagination". :)
Not many people realized how elaborately symbolic this ride was. While the technology would be considered blah by today's standards, the symbolism and evocative imagery made this ride waaaaay more incredible under the surface than many people realized.
@ashxf yeah the ride is going down fast today. kodak stopped sponsoring it, so most of imageworks is closed. only the melody makers and sound pictures are open. it has become very empty, and I don't like the feeling because it creates. they are probably going to refurb it to be more like this one :) finally
This version has so, so much respect for all of the creative people out there. Writers like myself, artists, we can all share in the common bond of imagination to draw from. I feel a great deal of respect whenever I see/hear this version. ^^
In my 1st comment on this video, i said that i was suprised that someone knew the original voice of figment, Billy Barty. Then i asked, Does anyone know the voice of figment in the current version of the ride, the one with Dr. Nigel Channing. But it seems that none of you know the answer.
meh, the only person from SNL i see doing any ride for disney is probably Will Farrel, for fucks sake, he played Bob Oblong in one full season of "the oblongs"
Says me. You're looking at it too much with a left brained view. The ride-- Journey Into Imagination; The concept of version one-- see what the imagination is capable of. Version 2 and version 3 looks like Journey into Office Max.
v. 2, definetly. V. 3 starts off that way to show the character of Dr. Channing because he believes the Imagination should be collected and controlled, when you get to Figment, who believes the imagination should be set free, his part is colorvul and vibrant. Figment is showing Channing and us what the Imagination is capable of. Could this be more? Yeah, it could but it's a decent concept
I still think it doesn't live up to the original. Figment in the original version was an innocent, childlike sprite, a symbol of the childish side of imagination, just as Dreamfinder was the slightly more refined, yet still eccentric and more adult part of imagination. Dreamfinder has been MIA since the ride was remoddeled, and Figment has suddenly turned into a smart-alecky pain-in-the-neck. It just seems stale, smarmy and trite.
I'll give you that. It doesn't quite "live up" to the original, but that doesn't mean the current one has no imagination to begin with. I mean, for one thing, I saw v2. *shudders* If they could turn THAT into a decent ride, then SOMEONE had some imagination ;)
Still the original version will be greatly missed. I wish I knew about this or even rode on this version when I was a lad. Oh, well....one day somebody will recapture that old magic that was and still is "Journey into imagination". :*)
says who? The new one has more story and symbolism in it. Dr. Channing's part is dull and square because he himself is saying that the Imagination should be "collected" and "controled." Figment's part is as colorful and vibrant as the original becuase he believes the imagination should be "set free." It's imaginative through a different and symbolic way, not just in colorful scenes
You know, watching this video, it really stands out how much of a work of art this ride was. Look at all the colours and the paintings. The new one seems downright sterile by comparison. I really wish they'd bring this one back, even if it's in the Magic Kingdom instead of EPCOT...
This is a good video, even if it is in parts. I'm amazed that Themeparkdude1 knows the original voice of figment, Billy Barty. However, do you know who is the voice of figment in the current version?
I understand what you mean. Back before honey I shrunk the audience when it was just Magic Journeys in the magic eye theater there was no instatute theme.
I like the orignal ride for its creativity. The latest version is ok. It is more of a senses spark the imagination rather than what thinking or dreaming can spark in your imagination.
Well, as much as I love the old one and felt it was worth preserving on video, I think the new one gets things better than this did. It keeps in EPCOT's theme much better and it actually fits with the other attraction in the Imagination Pavillion. I also think the diolouge is less childish too
I have to disagree. Science is meaningless without imagination and creativity to give it direction, and this is coming from an engineer. The new ride just has no soul to it.
By the same token, what does Nemo or The Lion King have to do with EPCOT either? Yet, they're still there (The Sea and Earth pavillions respectively). It's not so much the presentation as it is the message. And yes, imagination very much does have a role in an Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. When you think about it, imagination is the FOUNDATION of such a concept. Not sensory stimulation, IMAGINATION!
You make a very good point there that I hadn't thought of. I think the Imagination Institute still has potential as a theme though. Perhaps combining it with the Dreamfinder could make things interesting
You know if one looks carefully you can see one of the names on the door of the current version has a person by the name of "Dean Finder", guess the old Dreamfinder couldn't bear to part with the former dreamport so he got a job at the institute to continue his imagination work. :)
It's kinda like the old Mr. Toad ride being taken out for Winnie the Pooh, but in Owl's house, there's a picture of Owl recieving the deed to the ride from Mr. Toad. They always put stuff from the original that will remind them of what was there ^_^
I have to say this ride looks way better than the new one, it was fit with imagination.
Me too, I can't believe they took it out, It showed how imagination could be fun and scary, for creating art and stories, and how if we didn't have an imagination, we wouldn't have all the stuff we had today.
